LSU struggles again in loss to Kentucky

The LSU Tigers (10-4, 5-3) suffered their second consecutive double-digit loss on Saturday in an 82-69 loss at Kentucky (5-9, 4-3).

The LSU Tigers (10-4, 5-3) suffered their second consecutive double-digit loss on Saturday in an 82-69 loss at Kentucky (5-9, 4-3).

Much like their loss to Alabama earlier this week, the Tigers were never really in the game. Kentucky controlled the game from start to finish, leading by 13 points at halftime.

Early in the second half, it appeared the Tigers were making a run, as forward Trendon Watford was fouled while making a bucket, cutting UK’s lead to 54-47 at the first television timeout.

Freshman star Cameron Thomas would score on LSU’s next possession, cutting the lead to five points.

That was about it for the Tigers.

Kentucky immediately answered, and the game was never really close again. The Wildcats maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the second half as the Tigers continued to struggle from the field.

This is a tough loss for LSU. Earlier in the week, the Tigers were playing for first place, now they are tied for third place in the SEC — and three games behind first-place Alabama.

LSU shot 38.5 percent from the field and was even worse from beyond the arc, shooting just 17 percent.

Watford led the Tigers with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Thomas finished with 18 points.

LSU returns to action on Tuesday with a trip to Texas A&M.

Alabama blows out LSU to remain undefeated in SEC play

The No. 18 Alabama Crimson Tide crushed the LSU Tigers, 105-75, on Tuesday night in Baton Rouge to remain undefeated in SEC play.

The No. 18 Alabama Crimson Tide crushed the LSU Tigers, 105-75, on Tuesday night in Baton Rouge to remain undefeated in SEC play.

It was a historic shooting performance for the Crimson Tide. Alabama made 23 3-pointers, setting a new SEC record, and shot 53.5 percent from beyond the arc.

The Tide jumped on the Tigers early, gaining a double-digit lead before the first television timeout. A big reason for Alabama’s early success was senior guard John Petty.

Petty, who was eight of 10 from 3-point range for the game, connected on seven of eight attempts in the first half. As a team, Alabama was 14 of 19 on 3-point attempts before the half, where it led 60-32 after the first 20 minutes.

The Crimson Tide’s hot shooting continued in the second half building a 40-point lead at one point.

For as hot as Alabama was from the field, the Tigers were quite the opposite. LSU shot 37.8 percent from the field and just 19 percent from beyond the arc.

Petty led the Crimson Tide with 24 points, while freshman guard Joshua Primo and sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly scored 22 points each. Primo and Quinerly combined to make 12 of 15 3-point attempts.

LSU freshman guard Cameron Thomas — the SEC’s leading scorer — led the Tigers with 18 points.

The win moves Alabama to 12-3 on the season and 7-0 in the SEC. LSU falls to 10-3, with a 5-2 mark in league play.

Alabama has now won eight consecutive games and hosts Mississippi State on Saturday.

LSU heads back on the road with back-to-back meetings against Kentucky and Texas A&M.

The LSU Tigers (10-2, 5-1) used a late rally on Saturday evening to defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3, 1-1), 85-80, in Baton Rouge.

The Gamecocks led for much of the game and went into halftime with a 38-34 lead. South Carolina, which was without head coach Frank Martin and two other assistants due to COVID-19, continued its hot play until midway through the second half when LSU finally went on a run.

The Tigers went on a 20-4 run beginning around the eight-minute mark in the second half and finally seized control of the game with under one minute remaining. LSU’s 84-76 lead with 34 seconds left in the game was its biggest, and the Tigers held off a talented and feisty Carolina squad.

Saturday’s game between LSU and South Carolina was only USC’s second game in 41 days as the Gamecocks have had eight games either canceled or postponed this season.

Freshman guard Cameron Thomas once again led the Tigers in scoring with 25 points. Forward Trendon Watford scored 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Guard Javonte Smart scored 15 points, while forward Darius Days finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Junior forward Keyshawn Bryant led the Gamecocks with 26 points.

Next up for LSU is a showdown with first-place Alabama on Tuesday in Baton Rouge.

he LSU Tigers rolled to an easy 92-76 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday evening in Baton Rouge.

The LSU Tigers rolled to an easy, 92-76 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday evening in Baton Rouge.

The Razorbacks jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead, but LSU went on an 18-0 run to jump ahead 22-7. The Tigers would go on another big run after Arkansas ended its scoring drought and went into halftime with a commanding 51-21 lead.

Arkansas entered the game with a 10-2 record and looked to be a formidable opponent for the Tigers, who were without forward Shareef O’Neal.

Also, outstanding LSU freshman guard Cameron Thomas was a game-time decision with an ankle injury but did play and scored 17 points.

LSU sophomore forward Trendon Watford led the team with 23 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Forward Darius Days had a big night, too, scoring 18 points and leading the Tigers with 13 rebounds.

All five LSU starters scored in double figures.

The victory moved the Tigers to 9-2 on the season with a 4-1 record in SEC play. LSU is now just one game behind first-place Alabama after its third consecutive win.

The Tigers’ next two games are against the SEC’s lone remaining unbeaten teams in league play in South Carolina and Alabama.

Fortunately for LSU, it doesn’t have to leave Baton Rouge for either game.

It was the first time LSU had played since Dec. 14 due to COVID-19.

Freshman guard Cameron Thomas was once again LSU’s leading scorer, this time scoring 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field.

It was a career-high for Thomas, who has scored at least 16 points in every game this season.

Sophomore forward Trendon Watford checked in with 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists in one of the most well-rounded games of his young career.

Darius Days chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds for LSU.

LSU shot 55 percent from the floor as a team; however, it made just four of 15 attempts from three-point range. The Tigers were outrebounded by Nicholls, which was playing for the first time since Dec. 1.

LSU was without guard Javonte Smart, who missed the game for unspecified reasons. Freshman Eric Gaines made the start in his place.

LSU has finished nonconference play and begins SEC play on Tuesday against Texas A&M.

Darius Days rebounded a missed shot by Watford down 83-79 to pull the Tigers within two points. But the final moments of the game saw the Tigers lose control of the possession which led to the foul on Perkins.

Thomas had 21 points in the second half to pull the Tigers within a four-point differential after he scored 27 in his first career game on Thursday.
