Varina’s Barry Hill takes home Week 14 Top Star for stellar play in the secondary

Varina’s Barry Hill disrupted the Highland Springs offense, and takes home the Week 14 Top Star because of it.

Highland Springs (Virginia) head coach Loren Johnson said you can’t win a game in the second round of the playoffs based off the way his team played against Varina (Richmond, Virginia).

Johnson was telling WTVR-TV that because of his team’s turnovers.The Springers had six turnovers, four of which came on interceptions. Those interceptions? All came from one person: Barry Hill.

Hill anchored Varina’s secondary and helped snap Highland Springs’ 40-game winning streak in the process. The performance also led to another win — a first place finish in the Top Star Voting in Week 14 after earning 10,837 votes and 35.02% of the total.

Another player who made key defensive plays finished second in the voting.

Muskego’s (Wisconsin) Bryan Gruehn played a pivotal role in his team winning the Division 1 State Championship in Wisconsin. Gruehn had a sack that forced a fumble. Then, he recovered the fumble and scored a 60-yard touchdown. That play made is 21-10, which ended up being the final score over Bay Port (Wisconsin).

“He’s the most positive kid in our program,” Warriors coach Ken Krause told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “He’s hugging people all the time. He’s telling coaches when coaches get a little rattled to stay calm. He’s a complete winner. He’s an unsung hero.”

Gruehn tallied 9,237 votes and 29.85% of the total.

Central Catholic’s (Pittsburgh) John Opalko came in third. He kicked a game-winning, 37-yard field goal to give Central Catholic the victory over State College (Pennsylvania). He had 6,614 votes, which was 21.37% of the total.

Owasso QB Cole Dugger voted Week 13 Top Star for performance vs. Norman

The Week 13 Super 25 Top Star: Cole Dugger, Owasso.

Cole Dugger, as he has been all season, was instrumental in Owasso’s win over Norman on Nov. 15, throwing for 214 yards and four touchdowns.

For his performance, Dugger was voted the Week 13 Super 25 Top Star.

He finished with 34,109 votes, 45.37% of the final tally.

Dugger has led Owasso this year, throwing multiple touchdowns in every single game this year for the undefeated Rams. They play Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) Saturday in the semifinals.

FULL TALLY: Super 25 Top Star, Week 13

In second place for Super 25 voting was Aidan Longwell of Washington (Massillon, Ohio). The quarterback went 14-for-15 with 300 yards and five touchdowns in the playoff win.

Longwell finished just behind Dugger in the voting, recording 29,774 votes, 39.6% of the poll.

Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore) linebacker Brandon Fique finished in third place. His defensive efforts — in particular, the recovered fumble in the end zone — helped the Gaels prevail in a 17-10 game.

Fique had 6,589 votes in the poll, which was 8.76% of all voters.

Thompson QB Sawyer Pate voted Super 25 Week 12 Top Star

Sawyer Pate was pretty much perfect in Thompson’s Nov. 8 win over Austin, completing every pass and throwing four touchdowns. He was voted the Week 12 Top Star.

Sawyer Pate’s day for Thompson (Alabaster, Alabama) on Nov. 8 was basically perfect: He completed all 11 passes for 215 yards and threw four touchdowns in the 54-20 win.

For his performance, Pate was voted the Super 25 Week 12 Top Star.

The senior received 14,217 votes, which was 46.41% of the finally tally.

Pate has had an insane season, entering Friday night with a 76% completion rate and 2,322 passing yards with 33 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

FINAL TALLY: Super 25 Top Star voting, Week 12

In second place was Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) wide receiver Noah Kjar, who had 129 receiving yards and two touchdowns on five receptions in the playoff win.

Kjar finished with 29.41% of the voting, 9,008 total votes.

Reggie Kellum finished in third place. The Lakeland (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) running back only had two carries, but those two carries went for 140 yards and both ended in the end zone.

He had 2,350 votes, good for 7.67% of the poll.
