A dislocated elbow is what landed Colts’ LB Cam McGrone on IR

A dislocated elbow is what landed Colts’ linebacker Cameron McGrone on injured reserve to start the season.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Cameron McGrone is beginning the 2024 season on injured reserve. According to The Athletic’s James Boyd, it was a dislocated elbow that landed McGrone on IR.

Prior to Wednesday’s practice, Boyd spoke with McGrone who added that the injury occurred during a drill in training camp and that it did require surgery.

In the past, McGrone has also overcome two separate ACL injuries, one that he suffered in his right knee while in high school and the other to his left knee while in college.

McGrone would only play in the Colts’ first preseason game, where he made five tackles and forced a fumble.

During roster cutdowns, McGrone was one of two Colts players–the other being defensive end Samson Ebukam–who was placed on IR but designated to return. This new designation allows to teams to have up to two players return from IR without having to initially be placed on the 53-man roster.

Last season with the Colts, McGrone emerged as a core special teams contributor, playing 151 total snaps across four different phases. Presumably, he will be a major factor again in that phase of the game when he returns.

Following roster cutdowns, when general manager Chris Ballard was speaking with the media, he mentioned the major strides that McGrone had made in his game over the last year and that the team is looking forward to getting him back.

As of now, we do not know what the timetable for McGrone’s return looks like. The IR rules require that he must miss at least four games.

Colts reportedly placing LB Cam McGrone on IR and designate him to return

The Colts are reportedly placing linebacker Cameron McGrone on injured reserve and designating him to return. Here is what you need to know.

With roster cutdowns taking place, the Colts are reportedly placing linebacker Cameron McGrone on injured reserve but designating him to return, according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star.

McGrone appeared in the Colts first preseason game against Denver and had a very strong performance, recording four tackles, forcing a fumble, and holding pass catchers to only 7.0 yards per reception. He also played 15 special teams snaps.

Unfortunately, an injury would sideline McGrone and he wouldn’t see any more preseason snaps the remainder of training camp.

Prior to the injury, McGrone was competing with Segun Olubi for the backup middle linebacker role. He was also a key special teams contributor in 2023, playing 151 total snaps.

Under the new injured reserve rules, teams can designate up to two players to return without having to first place them on the 53-man roster.

During previous years, if an injured player was put on IR before rosters were set, they could not return that season. So as a workaround, teams would have to first place that player on the 53-man, taking up a roster spot and forcing them to cut someone else, only to then move that injured player to IR, along with then having to fill that roster spot.

Along with McGrone being designated to return, so is defensive end Samson Ebukam. So now the question becomes, what does this mean for Jelani Woods?

Woods recently had toe surgery that will reportedly keep him out for roughly four months. If the Colts want him back this season, he will have to be on the 53-man roster. If they don’t put him on the roster, his season with the Colts is over.

Colts sign 9 to futures contracts among several roster moves

The Colts made 14 roster moves Monday to begin the 2024 offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts officially got their offseason underway Monday by making several roster moves, including the signings of nine players to Reserve/Future contracts, the team announced.

Along with the nine futures contracts the team signed, all of which include players from the practice squad, the Colts also signed four players to one-year contract extensions while waiving another player. So in total, the Colts made 14 moves.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 13. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. It is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 14 moves the Colts made to begin the offseason:
