Panthers missing CB Stephon Gilmore, LT Cameron Erving again on Thursday

With Cameron Erving out of practice again on Thursday, a second straight start at LT for Panthers rookie Brady Christensen looks to be a real possibility.

We might as well slap the ol’ “Out” tag on Carolina Panthers cornerback Stephon Gilmore for Week 17. If the head coach comes out, as early as Matt Rhule did on Wednesday, and says you’re not expected to play—that’s essentially as good as official.

So, Thursday’s absence of the 2019 Defensive Player of Year was not the least bit surprising. Also remaining out with Gilmore was offensive lineman Cameron Erving.

The 2021 free-agent signing has already missed six games due to various injuries in his first season with Carolina. If he cannot go for the second straight week, we’ll likely see rookie Brady Christensen start on the blindside once again.

Here’s how the rest of the day’s report panned out:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
LT Cameron Erving Calf DNP DNP
CB Stephon Gilmore Groin DNP DNP
S Kenny Robinson Illness DNP
S Juston Burris Groin Limited Limited
LB Jermaine Carter Jr. Groin Limited Limited
S Sean Chandler Groin Limited

(Geez, that’s a lot of groin pains.)

In addition to being a little short on the report, the Panthers also placed a new trio of players on the reserve/COVID-19 list—safety Kenny Robinson, running back Reggie Bonnafon and defensive end Darryl Johnson. They did, however, get back corner Rashaan Melvin, who will provide some much needed help for a battered secondary.

Panthers WR DJ Moore out for second straight practice

The Panthers, for a second consecutive practice, were without WR DJ Moore ahead of their Week 16 tilt with the Bucs.

With injuries that could leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers empty-handed of their two star receivers, their starting running back and their rock of a linebacker—the Carolina Panthers could be facing a pretty compromised opponent in Week 16. But their setbacks haven’t exactly been limited either.

Along with having to place starting center Pat Elflein and backup offensive lineman Dennis Daley on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday, the Panthers were once again without wideout DJ Moore. Moore, who has been nursing a hamstring strain for the past two weeks, received his second consecutive session off from practice—as listed on the day’s report.

Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
WR DJ Moore Hamstring DNP DNP
CB Stephon Gilmore Knee Limited Full
OT Cameron Erving Calf Limited Limited
DT Phil Hoskins Back Limited

Gilmore, who was unaware that he was even on Wednesday’s report, may not have been surprised by what was a full participation for him 24 hours later. Erving remained limited—increasing the chances of 2021 third-rounder Brady Christensen getting the start at left tackle.

Fellow rookie Phil Hoskins, unfortunately, was carted off during practice with a what was listed as a back issue.

Panthers WR DJ Moore out, Brady Christensen gets LT reps at practice

While Panthers fans got a much welcomed sight with Brady Christensen at LT on Wednesday, there was no sight of WR DJ Moore on the practice field.

Wednesday’s big news for the Carolina Panthers, obviously, was the impending return of quarterback Sam Darnold. But, there were two additional nuggets of pretty pertinent information coming out of the afternoon.

One concerns wideout DJ Moore, who did not participate in practice due to his hamstring strain. Moore, who had initially sustained the injury against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14, roughed it out in Buffalo this past Sunday after being listed as questionable for the contest.

Head coach Matt Rhule told reporters that the team’s leading receiver will likely be a game-time decision for Week 16’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The second bit, which stems from a calf injury to starting left tackle Cameron Erving, saw rookie Brady Christensen take reps on the blindside during today’s session. The 2021 third-round pick has picked up starts at left tackle, right tackle and right guard this season.

Here’s the first injury report of the week in its entirety, which also includes a limited Stephon Gilmore:

Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
WR DJ Moore Hamstring DNP

Panthers designating OT Cameron Erving to return from IR

The Panthers may be getting back their starting left tackle in Cameron Erving to close out 2021.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has seen plenty a left tackle during his 10 years under center with the organization. Now, as the final stretch of 2021 begins, he may be adding another name to that list.

As reported by team reporter Darin Gantt, the Panthers will be designating offensive lineman Cameron Erving for a return off the injured reserve. Erving will have 21 days of a practice window to work with before being officially reinstated to the active roster—if that is eventually the case.

The seventh-year veteran was placed on the IR back on Nov. 8 following the Week 9 loss to the New England Patriots. Erving sustained a calf injury that has kept him out of Carolina’s last three games.

As a result, the offense has started Dennis Daley—with a little relief help from rookie Brady Christensen in Week 11, on the blindside. That, obviously, has not been what you would call a perfect fix.

Erving is eligible to return starting with Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Panthers place LT Cameron Erving, C Matt Paradis on IR

The Panthers’ offensive line will now move on without LT Cameron Erving and C Matt Paradis for the foreseeable future.

We’re running out of fingers to count how many different offensive line combinations the Carolina Panthers have used this season. So, hopefully, we can grow a few more.

Until then, the counting will continue as the team announced they’ve placed center Matt Paradis and left tackle Cameron Erving on the injured reserve.

Paradis, who tore his ACL in Sunday’s 24-6 loss to the New England Patriots, will miss the remainder of the 2021 campaign. Erving, meanwhile, had an MRI scheduled for Monday to determine the severity of his calf injury.

As for the incoming Week 10 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals—the Panthers will likely tab Dennis Daley and Pat Elflein to replace Erving and Paradis, respectively.

Carolina also announced a pair of departures, as they’ve waived running back Royce Freeman and linebacker Clay Johnston.

The return of star rusher Christian McCaffrey and the signing of Ameer Abdullah has made Freeman, who played in eight games, a fourth wheel. He totaled 77 yards on the ground over 21 carries.

Johnson appeared in six games, posting a combined 10 tackles.

The team, additionally, signed punter Lachlan Edwards up to the active roster and placed practice squad wideout Aaron Parker on the injured reserve as well.

4 takeaways from the Panthers’ 24-6 loss to Patriots

The Panthers took a nasty spill to the Patriots in a helpless Week 9 effort.

The Carolina Panthers had seemingly found some footing with their Week 8 victory in Atlanta. But, now, they’ve slipped. Again.

Here are four takeaways from their nasty spill to the New England Patriots.

Panthers snap count standouts: Offensive line stands strong vs. Falcons

The Panthers’ sixth different configuration of their offensive line in 2021 stayed on the field all day and did not allow a single sack.

After an ugly four-game losing streak pulled them down into the cellar of the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers were in desperate need of a clean outing in Week 8. Fortunately, that’s precisely what they got.

That clean outing, which resulted in a 19-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons, was guided by a strong gameplan and, of course, a few interesting showings in the team’s final snap counts of the afternoon.

Panthers Week 8 injury report: LB Shaq Thompson questionable vs. Falcons

Panthers HC Matt Rhule says he expects LB Shaq Thompson to suit up against the Falcons in Week 8.

All things considered, the Carolina Panthers should’ve come out of Friday’s practice relatively satisfied on the injury front.

In the team’s final report heading into their Week 8 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, three offensive linemen—two of them starters in left tackle Cameron Erving and center Matt Paradis—did not receive a game designation. That, of course, implies they’re each good to go for what’s been a struggling front all season.

(So while they may not be great, at least they’re not out.)

The biggest name of the bunch, linebacker Shaq Thompson, has been given the questionable label after an encouraging week of practice. What’s more encouraging, though, is what head coach Matt Rhule had to say about him—as he told reporters he expects the seventh-year defender to suit up.

Here’s the final report in its entirety:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
CB C.J. Henderson Shoulder Limited Limited Limited Questionable
LB Shaq Thompson Foot Limited Limited Limited Questionable
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Concussion DNP DNP Limited Out
FB Giovanni Ricci Concussion Limited Full Full
T Cameron Erving Neck Full Full Full
T Daviyon Nixon Knee Limited DNP
DE Darryl Johnson Hamstring DNP DNP Out
T Trent Scott Finger Full Full
C Matt Paradis Back Limited Limited

As for cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the Panthers will take the same approach as they did last week. They’ll gauge his progress going into tomorrow and make a call from there.

Panthers add three players to Thursday’s Week 8 injury report

The Panthers added a trio of new players to their Week 8 injury report, including C Matt Paradis.

Perhaps the last turn of unfortunate events the Carolina Panthers can afford to take on is even towards more uncertainty along their offensive line. Welp . . .

On Thursday, the team added three new names to the Week 8 injury report ahead of its matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. That trio includes center Matt Paradis, who was limited with a back issue, and tackle Trent Scott, who did participate fully despite a finger injury.

Potentially being without Paradis would be a major hit for Carolina, considering the primary backup at center in Pat Elflein is also working his way back from a hip injury. Sam Tecklenburg, who is in his second year, would likely get the nod if Paradis can’t go.

Luckily, however, the current status of left tackle Cameron Erving—in addition to Scott being a full-go—are two positive signs as the week winds down.

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game Status
CB C.J. Henderson Shoulder Limited Limited
LB Shaq Thompson Foot Limited Limited
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. Concussion DNP DNP
FB Giovanni Ricci Concussion Limited Full
T Cameron Erving Neck Full Full
T Daviyon Nixon Knee Limited DNP
DE Darryl Johnson Hamstring DNP
T Trent Scott Finger Full
C Matt Paradis Back Limited

Panthers Week 7 inactives: LB Shaq Thompson headlines list vs. Giants

Panthers LB Shaq Thompson is getting closer, but he’ll be out today against the Giants.

Sunday’s absence of Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson is certainly no surprise. After all, the team had already ruled him out well ahead of the trip to take on the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

There is, though, at least an encouraging sign for his status moving forward.

Thompson, who will now be missing his third straight contest, was on the field prior to today’s contest for pregame workouts. The seventh-year backer is currently dealing with a plantar fascia issue.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the Panthers:

LB Shaq Thompson
WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
FB Giovanni Ricci
OT Cameron Erving
DT Phil Hoskins
DE Darryl Johnson
CB Rashaan Melvin

As confirmed yesterday, Erving will miss his second outing of the season, this time with an illness. Rookie Brady Christensen will start in his place.

Marshall Jr., who will be sidelined due to a concussion, is also joined by fellow wideout Brandon Zylstra, who was placed on the injured reserve earlier in the week. Carolina called up practice squad receivers Keith Kirkwood and Aaron Parker to help soften the blow.

The Giants, obviously, will not be nearly as well off:

RB Saquon Barkley
WR Kenny Golladay
WR Kadarius Toney
WR Sterling Shepard
CB Josh Jackson
CB Sam Beal
DT Danny Shelton
