Is Mike Tomlin choosing loyalty over CB Beanie Bishop Jr.?

Cam Sutton’s assumption of the starting slot role in Week 13 could potentially slow down Beanie Bishop Jr.’s impressive rookie campaign.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Pittsburgh Steelers have dealt with a plethora of positional battles in 2024, with several seemingly being decided on a matter of HC Mike Tomlin’s preference rather than skill set. Tomlin’s decision to bring Russell Wilson into the starting conversation a few games too late was an example of this, as was his decision to ‘move on’ from rookie WR Roman Wilson’s participation earlier in the season when he was healthy. Tomlin is once again staring down another opportunity to make amends and choose dynamic play over loyalty, but the head coach seems keen on the latter.

While rookie slot cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. has been electric to start the 2024 season, the return of veteran slot cornerback Cam Sutton from suspension complicated the situation. It had appeared that Bishop had locked up the starting slot cornerback role, regardless of Sutton’s return. However, Week 13 saw the rookie see the field for only 9.7% of the defensive snaps, while Sutton took over the slot cornerback duties, playing over 70% of the snaps on defense. Sutton would give up two touchdowns in the contest, while Bishop hasn’t given up a touchdown since Week 6.

Tomlin tried to clarify that it was a matchup issue, but previous roster decisions he’s made may tell a different story.

Will Bishop be given his chance to earn back the starting job he should have never lost? Or is this another circumstance with Tomlin choosing loyalty over talent?

Around the North: Steelers corner Cam Sutton suspended for 8 games

Cleveland’s division rival will be without Sutton for awhile

Cleveland’s AFC North rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be without one of their starting corners for nearly half the season. Cam Sutton was given an eight-game suspension on Monday, and reports say he will not appeal the suspension.

The suspension is for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. He will be reinstated in late October after the Steelers play the New York Giants. This comes after Sutton was arrested for battery after an alleged incident with his girlfriend during the off-season.

After the incident, Sutton was released by the Detroit Lions, and the Steelers signed him knowing that something like this was coming. 2023 was a down year for Sutton, his first outside of Pittsburgh, but he has plenty of talent and experience in the Steelers system.

Pittsburgh likely has a plan to cover while he is out and could turn to some young, promising players on the roster during the first eight games.

Cam Sutton suspended for 8 games, could help the Lions’ salary case against him

Steelers CB Cam Sutton is suspended for 8 games for personal conduct policy violations, which should help the Lions’ salary case against him

Former Lions cornerback Cam Sutton now has his NFL punishment stemming from the March domestic incident that led Detroit to cut the veteran starter. The league’s decision to mete out some harsh punishment on Sutton could be a boon to the Lions in their ongoing battle with their disgraced former player.

Sutton was suspended by the NFL for eight games on Monday for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Sutton will not appeal the suspension, meaning he will miss Pittsburgh’s first eight games.

The lengthy suspension could help the Lions in their quest to have his guaranteed money voided. The team filed the necessary paperwork to have Sutton’s contractual legacy voided for his conduct, but Sutton apparently filed an appeal to keep at least some of the $10.5 million the Lions had previously guaranteed to him.

Getting suspended by the league for eight games indicates that Sutton did indeed commit an egregious enough act to justify the Lions’ decision to release him. It can only help Detroit’s case to get the full contract value fully voided, though it’s all still up to an arbitrator to decide at an unknown time.

Hopefully the entire sordid mess and contract voidance issue is resolved soon.

The Cam Sutton contract wasn’t fully voided for the Lions

The Cam Sutton contract wasn’t fully voided for the Lions, based on the latest salary cap figures from the NFLPA and Over The Cap

When the Detroit Lions released veteran cornerback Cam Sutton after his legal issues earlier this offseason, the team applied to the NFL to have his entire contractual obligation for 2024 recovered. Based on recent figures from the NFLPA and Over The Cap, that did not happen.

Sutton was initially due to cost the Lions $10.5 million in base salary for 2024. Detroit released Sutton with a June 1st designation and was hoping to have all of that $10.5 million cleared because of Sutton’s domestic charges and failure to turn himself into authorities promptly despite being at the team’s facility.

However, the latest salary cap update from the NFLPA shows a lower increase in Detroit’s cap room. Over the Cap now shows a $4.2 million dead money charge on the Lions’ books for 2024, and the NFLPA numbers reflect the same figure.

That would mean the NFL did not fully void Sutton’s salary obligation with the Lions. There has been no public info released on any potential settlement or ruling as of yet. Detroit now has just under $36 million in available cap room based on the NFLPA’s accounting.

Sutton recently signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is also unclear if Sutton’s contract with Pittsburgh contains any salary offsets that benefit the Lions.

Update:

Per Jason from Over The Cap, Sutton has filed a grievance or will do so, which results in 40% of the total figure being charged to the team, pending the outcome of the grievance hearing.

Steelers are signing ex-Lions CB Cam Sutton

Steelers are signing ex-Lions CB Cam Sutton after Detroit released him over domestic assault charges

It didn’t take long for ex-Lions cornerback Cam Sutton to find a new NFL home. Days after his June 1st release, Sutton is rejoining the Steelers.

Sutton is heading back to Pittsburgh to rejoin his old team. Per reports, it’s a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum for Sutton, who played for the Steelers for the first six seasons of his NFL career.

His one season in Detroit did not go as well as hoped. Sutton struggled in man coverage on the outside more than expected, though his run defense and tackling remained very good. Then a domestic assault situation over the winter led the Lions to sever ties with Sutton.

After spending some time on the lam, Sutton turned himself in to Florida authorities. Felony domestic assault charges were later reduced to a misdemeanor after the Lions had released Sutton. Detroit’s quest for salary cap relief remains in limbo even after the June 1st release.

Steelers plan to sign CB Cam Sutton to contract

The Steelers are planning to being back cornerabck Cam Sutton.

Everything old is new again. According to Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac, the Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting with former Pittsburgh cornerback Cam Sutton and plan to sign him to a one-year contract at the veteran minimum.

Sutton spent his first six seasons with the Steelers after they selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Sutton started 56 games with Pittsburgh including every game of the last two seasons. Sutton was the team’s best cornerback on the roster in 2022 and parlayed that into a big free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions.

But after a strong 2023, Sutton was released after some off-field allegations of domestic battery that turned out to be far less serious than first indicated. Sutton and the Steelers have reconnected and if Sutton can play like he has the last three seasons, he completely solidifies the cornerback depth chart.

Terrion Arnold: What the Lions are getting with their first-round cornerback

Terrion Arnold: Breaking down what the Lions are getting with their first-round cornerback with film study from Russell Brown

It was shocking to see Terrion Arnold become available at the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. It was expected that teams such as the Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars would be “all-in” on Arnold but instead they all passed. This opened the door for Lions General Manager Brad Holmes to make a phone call and get aggressive.

He did just that.

When the 24th overall pick showed the Cowboys logo, the hundreds of thousands Detroit fans in attendance were booing. Suddenly, the Lions logo flashed, and the crowd got loud and went nuts. Once NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell walked across the stage and announced Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold as the Lions pick, the crowd got louder and erupted with approval of the selection.

Arnold walked across the stage, held up the Lions jersey and announced to the crowd that “they got a star” and that “he was home.” Since then, we’ve seen clips of Arnold talking with family about getting and wanting a gold jacket. Meaning he wants to make a name for himself and make it to the Hall of Fame.

Everything about Terrion Arnold feels different. It’s not like most players that get drafted and are just “thankful for the opportunity” or “just can’t wait to get started.” Arnold wants to be great and it shines through his smile and everything he says.

Now we’ll see what he does when he steps onto the field in Detroit. For now, we can review his tape at Alabama this past season. So let’s do that and see what the Lions are getting with cornerback Terrion Arnold!

The first play I want to highlight is from the SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia. On the bottom of the screen, you’ll see Alabama CB Terrion Arnold (3) matched up against Georgia WR Ladd McConkey (84).

Aligned in press-man, Arnold is faced with the tough task of covering McConkey at the line of scrimmage. The reason that task is so tough is due to the release packages that McConkey has at his disposal. Labeled as one of the better and more fluid route runners in the 2024 NFL Draft, Arnold had to be at his best when matched up against him.

The play above shows just that as Arnold uses his hands to work against McConkey. Meanwhile, as the route breaks inside, Arnold flashes patience, quick feet and good fluidity to change direction and stay in the hip pocket of the receiver. As the pass is delivered, you can see Arnold draped over the shoulder of McConkey and it helps him stay in position to breakup the pass.

Moving onto the Rose Bowl matchup between Alabama and Michigan, Arnold is aligned in the slot. Matched up against the tight end, he looks more than comfortable for any route that threatens the defense vertically. Meanwhile, he reads the shoulders of the tight end right away.

Once the tight end fully turns, Arnold knows that a quicker route is being run, and he quickly closes the gap between himself and the tight end. Seeing the ball in the air, Arnold gets in position to play through the hands of the tight end to break up the pass.

Lastly, I want to highlight one of Arnold’s five interceptions in 2023. In the play above, the Kentucky offense uses a trip left formation. Arnold is highlighted, and prior to the snap, he communicates with the rest of the defense. There’s even an instance where two defenders are staring at Arnold as he communicates.

Aligned in off-man, you’ll notice the fluidity from Arnold. His tape is filled with plays just like this, where he’s able to flip his hips and stay in position due to quick feet and good pad level. As the receiver breaks towards the sideline, you’ll notice how Arnold is in great positioning to stay on top of the route.

Reading the eyes of the quarterback from the far hash, he knows he can jump this route and he does just that and it leads to the interception. These types of ball skills and instincts were missing from the Lions secondary last season and Arnold should be able to develop into a playmaker in Detroit.

Overall, there’s so much to love when watching Terrion Arnold play football. Depending on who you talk with, he was potentially the best defensive player in the 2024 NFL Draft. If he weren’t, he would have been a close second. Most cornerbacks that have his talent end up being selected somewhere in the top 20, but fortunately, the offensive talent in the draft pushed him right into reaching distance for Brad Holmes and the Lions to strike.

For Arnold, he’s a good athlete and it shows. He’s a former high school basketball player and he also ran track. In basketball, he averaged 8.8 PPG and 4 RPG while having a PR of 23.92 seconds in the 200-meter dash for track and field.

In football, Arnold excels in man coverage with his press-man skills. He plays physical and loves contact and competition from the opposition. His aggressiveness will get him trouble as it appears to cause his technique to get wild or it’ll take him out of position. But his fluidity, effort and ability to press and lockdown receivers is encouraging for his development in the NFL.

There’s potential for him to be a starter from day one but fortunately, the Lions have enough veteran depth that he can ease his way into a starting role for Detroit. With how talented and competitive Arnold is, it wouldn’t be surprising if he started right away for Detroit. It’s easy to see why he’s the perfect fit for the Lions defense.

Ex-Lions CB Cameron Sutton turned himself in to authorities in Florida

Ex-Lions CB Cam Sutton turned himself in to authorities in Florida

Recently released Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton has turned himself in to authorities in Florida for an arrest warrant that led to his release from the team.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a video of Sutton entering their facility and turning himself in. Sutton was wanted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation stemming from an incident on March 7 with a woman at a home in the community north of Tampa.

The Lions released Sutton shortly after it was discovered that he was wanted on a domestic assault charge and had fled the scene of the alleged incident. He had been at large for almost three weeks, and there were concerns about Sutton’s safety and well-being.

Breaking down the financial impact of the Lions releasing Cameron Sutton

Breaking down the financial impact of the Lions releasing Cameron Sutton

The Lions released cornerback Cameron Sutton on Thursday, a day after his fugitive status in a domestic violence case in Florida came to light. There are some financial ramifications for Detroit in releasing Sutton in the second year of his three-year, $33 million contract.

Per Field Yates of ESPN, the Lions designated Sutton as a post-June 1 release. That means the team saves some cap room for 2024, spreading out the cap hit over two seasons instead of all this year. The move saves the Lions $1.5 million in cap space, though that cannot be used by the team until after June 1.

While the exact language in Sutton’s contract is unclear, it appears the Lions will be able to void the salary guarantees from Sutton. Pro Football Talk reports that the Lions voided all the guaranteed money for 2024, though that has not been confirmed by team sources at this time. Typically, the contract impact of violations doesn’t get resolved by the NFL until the legal proceedings with the player are finalized.

The Lions are responsible for amortizing the $2.18 million signing bonus for 2024 and 2025. That money was already paid to Sutton when he signed his contract in 2023.

Update: According to Spotrac, the Lions intend to void the $10.5 million salary guarantee for 2024. Once that is approved by the league, the Lions will get that cap space back.

Spotrac now lists Detroit’s available cap room at just over $27 million.

Meanwhile, Sutton remains at large.

Lions release DB Cam Sutton following domestic violence arrest warrant

Trouble with the law has led to the Lions releasing DB Cam Sutton

The Detroit Lions released Cam Sutton on Thursday, a day after a domestic violence warrant was issued for the DB.

Per NFL.com:

The Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday announced that Sutton was wanted for alleged domestic battery by strangulation. The charge is a third-degree felony that is punishable by up to five years in prison. Authorities posted on social media Wednesday that they needed the public’s assistance in locating a wanted subject.

Sutton has been avoiding police since a March 7 incident when he is alleged to have been involved in a domestic violence incident in Lutz, FL,

The Detroit Free Press reported officers responded to a call of a domestic violence incident in progress shortly before 5 a.m. and found the victim with wounds that indicated an altercation took place, Phil Martello, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, told the Free Press on Wednesday.

Sutton signed a three-year contract with Detroit in March 23. He played in 17 games last season.
