Jaguars brought in 2 receivers for tryouts Monday

The Jaguars spent Monday trying out a pair of wide receivers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars brought in wide receivers Calvin Jackson and Mike Thomas for tryouts on Monday.

While the team previously had a Mike Thomas who spent four seasons with the Jaguars between 2009 and 2012, the Thomas who visited Monday is a 28-year-old free agent who previously played for the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals.

In four seasons with the Rams, Thomas saw most of his time on special teams, but also caught 10 passes for 144 yards. He was more of an offensive contributor in his time with the Bengals, catching 20 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown before he was waived last month in his third season with the team.

Jackson is an undrafted rookie who initially signed with the New York Jets in May and spent preseason with the team. He later had brief stints on the Jets and Miami Dolphins practice squads.

The Jaguars have six wide receivers on the active roster with Jamal Agnew, Marvin Jones, Tim Jones, Zay Jones, Christian Kirk, and Kendric Pryor. There’s another three receivers — Kevin Austin Jr, Jaylon Moore, and Seth Williams — on the practice squad, and recently acquired Calvin Ridley still suspended indefinitely.

Dolphins make slew of practice squad moves on Monday

An offensive tackle is among the new additions.

On Monday, just a day after defeating the Houston Texans to improve to 8-3 on the season, the Miami Dolphins announced four transactions involving practice squad players.

Wide receiver Freddie Swain was restored to the practice squad after previously dealing with an injury. Miami also released offensive lineman Grant Hermanns and wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. from the unit.

The Dolphins did make one addition to the practice squad, signing veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm.

Lamm, 30, signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent back in 2015. He spent four seasons with the Houston, two with the Cleveland Browns, one with the Tennessee Titans and part of this season with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

The former Appalachian State offensive lineman has played 86 NFL games and has started in 28 contests.

Primarily a right tackle in his career, Lamm has also played some left tackle, and with Austin Jackson also dealing with an injury, there’s a chance he could be helpful at either spot.

Dolphins place Brandon Jones on IR, sign WR to the practice squad

Miami wanted to have the wideout in for a visit this offseason

The Miami Dolphins confirmed Mike McDaniel’s beliefs on Tuesday, as they placed safety Brandon Jones on injured reserve following a knee injury that the former Longhorn suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jones’ absence will be tough to make up, but Clayton Fejedelem, Eric Rowe and Verone McKinley III will have to be up to the task.

However, that wasn’t the only move that Miami announced on Tuesday. They also signed wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. to the practice squad. This comes after NFL agent David Canter shared that his client, Jamal Perry, was joining the practice squad as well.

Jackson, who once starred in Netflix’s “Last Chance U,” was supposed to work out for the Dolphins this offseason, but he signed with the New York Jets before he had the chance.

The wideout has been without a team since New York released him from their practice squad before Week 1.

His name may be familiar to Dolphins fans, as his father, who went by the same name, played for Miami from 1994-99.

Jets cut WR Calvin Jackson

The Jets have begun their cuts to 53

The New York Jets have begun their road to 53 players by trimming their wide receiver room.

Per Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets have cut WR Calvin Jackson with the hopes of stashing him on their practice squad.

Jackson made a strong case for the 53-man roster, including catching the game-winning pass from QB Chris Streveler in Sunday’s preseason win over the Giants.

The Jets now will hope Jackson clears waivers and have the ability to place him on their practice squad on Wednesday. The Jets, as well as the rest of the league, have to be at 53 players by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. By Wednesday, they can begin building their 16-man practice squad.
