Callaway Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X, Chrome Soft X LS balls (2022)

Every Chrome Soft ball for 2022 undergoes a new 3D X-ray process to insure each ball is consistent and ready to perform.

Golfers dream about hitting the ball farther and thirst for more yards off the tee and from the fairway. We love blowing it past our playing partners and hitting one less club into the green on approach shots than anyone else in our group.

“Nice shot Steve. What did you hit back there?”

“Thanks Jim, you too! I hit a 6-iron. What about you?”

“7-iron.”

While distance is sexy, consistency is, well … not. But Callaway has made $50 million worth of improvements and upgrades to its golf ball factory in Chicopee, Massachusetts, over the last few years to make balls that not only perform well but also deliver more consistency shot after shot, ball after ball. That work is at the heart of 2022’s Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS balls.

As most golfers know, modern premium balls are constructed in layers, typically three, four or five of them. One of the hardest things to do from a manufacturing standpoint is to ensure each layer fits inside the other symmetrically. If the core is off-center, the ball will compress more on the side with more core material and create sidespin that will make the ball curve in the opposite direction. For example, if a player tees up a ball and the core is off-center to the right as it sits on the tee, the right side of the ball will compress more than the left and hook spin will be created, even if the driver’s face is square to the path at impact.

To ensure that all its balls have perfectly centered layers, Callaway is now using a 3D X-ray machine to scan each ball after it is produced. It measures the dimensions of every layer in the ball, including the mantle and cover, to make sure each is centered and the desired thickness in every direction.

Here’s are the other things you need to know about the Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS balls.

Callaway updated its flagship premium golf balls, the Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X, in 2020. The focus was on getting more speed from a larger core, creating a higher launch on approach shots and maintaining greenside spin. For most golfers, higher-flying shots create a steeper descent angle, and that can help players stop the ball faster on the greens for enhanced distance control.

However, some players create excessive spin both off the tee and from the fairway, so Callaway is expanding the Chrome Soft family with the introduction of the Chrome Soft X LS for those players.

The Chrome Soft X, a four-piece ball with a urethane cover, is the most-played Callaway ball on the PGA Tour, and it was the inspiration for the Chrome Soft X LS. The new low-spin version also features a large core, a dual mantle system and a proprietary urethane cover to enhance spin around the greens.

To reduce spin off the tee, Callaway gave the Chrome Soft X LS a different dimple pattern. Yes, the dimples are still hexagonal, but the new pattern decreases drag, Callaway said, to reduce spin on fast-swinging shots.

The Chrome Soft X LS will be available in white and yellow, and there will be white and yellow versions available with Callaway’s Triple Track alignment system as well.

For 2020, the Chrome Soft’s core is bigger and the Chrome Soft X now has a dual mantle layer. Both balls offer more distance and spin.

Manufacturers of premium golf balls usually focus on the performance benefits of their offerings in two areas: distance off the tee and spin around the green. When Callaway debuted the first Chrome Soft ball four years ago, it tried to go beyond those two things as engineers factored in how the balls performed with irons and wedges, too. For that reason, Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele and Francesco Molinari switched into either the Chrome Soft or the firmer-feeling Chrome Soft X.

For 2020, Callaway has updated both balls to help golfers get not only more distance but better overall performance.

The Chrome Soft is a four-piece, dual-core ball with a urethane cover. Like the previous Chrome Soft, the inner core is very soft, but for 2020 it is 34 percent larger, which should give this version of Chrome Soft more speed and a higher launch angle.

The inner core is encased in a second core, which is infused with Graphene, a nano-particle that reinforces the rubber. To accommodate the larger inner core, the outer core is thinner, but the Graphene helps make it more durable and also enhances spin on wedge shots.

The dual-core system is surrounded by a new ionomer mantle layer. Callaway designed it to transfer the speed created in the core more efficiently. It’s stiffer than the mantle used in the last generation of the Chrome Soft, and the company says it will allow wedges and short irons to grab the ball more easily and generate more spin.

Finally, the cover on the 2020 Chrome Soft is 10 percent thinner and made from a more resilient urethane to boost speed and lower spin off the tee. The hexagonal cover pattern is more aerodynamic, so it produces a higher launch with less drag for increased distance.

The new Chrome Soft will be available in white, yellow, Truvis (white and red, yellow and black) and a white Triple Track version.

The updated Chrome Soft X is also a four-piece ball, but instead of having a dual-core system like the last version, the new Chrome Soft X has one massive core. It’s 117 percent larger than the inner core of the 2018 ball and is made from a more resilient rubber to maximize speed.

A dual-mantle system surrounds the core. The inner mantle is soft, while the outer mantle is firm. Callaway said they work together to amplify speed with woods and long irons while providing a foundation for the soft urethane cover so golfers can generate more spin with their wedges.

The urethane cover is 22 percent thinner. Over the firm outer mantle, it helps give the Chrome Soft X a firmer overall feel without adding excessive spin off the tee. The Chrome Soft X ball will fly higher than the standard Chrome Soft, and it will be available in white, Triple Track white and Truvis (yellow and black).
