Cavaliers’ J.B. Bickerstaff had a bold prediction for the rookie class

Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff thinks the current rookie class could be a historic one when it is all said and done.

When the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers met on Saturday, the matchup gave fans the opportunity to watch two of the top first-year players in Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley. They were each top-three picks, and represent a big part of the future in a class that has dazzled.

Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff even thinks it could be a historic class.

Cunningham recorded 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot for his 10th double-double of the season in the loss to the Cavaliers. Meanwhile, Mobley had 12 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and one steal for his rookie-leading 20th double-double.

The two are among seemingly a handful of players in the discussion for Rookie of the Year. The race for the annual award appears to be as competitive as it has been in quite some time with so many in contention this late in the season.

Bickerstaff explained what has stood out about this group of rookies.

I think this class is going to go down, when we look back 10-15 years from now, as a top-three or top-four draft class of all-time. There are so many guys that can play at such a high level (with) their skillset and size and ability to impact winning, which is the most important thing that we should value. You see all of these young guys and they play the game more maturely than their age says they should and they have immense talent to go with it.

Cunningham and Mobley each have strong cases for Rookie of the Year.

The No. 1 pick recently tied a Pistons rookie record for most consecutive 20-point games (7) in team history, which ended on Saturday. He now leads the rookie class in scoring average (16.9) and is second in assists (5.4) and fourth in rebounding (5.9).

On the other side, Mobley is averaging 15.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 blocked shots. The third pick leads the class in rebounding and blocks and recently produced his first 30-point game on March 14 versus the Los Angeles Clippers.

Pistons head coach Dwane Casey recently called Cunningham the Rookie of the Year given his overall body of work and ability late in games. Of course, the two head coaches are biased toward their own players, but Casey acknowledged the stiff competition for the award.

I’m biased for Cade and everything but I’m also a realist and know there are other rookies that are out there, including Evan Mobley and (Houston Rockets guard) Jalen Green and all of those guys. I just feel like Cade brings so much to the table as far as where we are in our rebuild situation. We’re not in the playoff hunt because we’re purposely building our resume. You can make a case for each player but, like I said a couple of weeks ago, I’m very biased.

Cunningham and Mobley figure to also be competing against Green, Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. Each player has shown out all season long and could walk away with the award, as a result.

The rookie class has dazzled throughout the season and could emerge as one of the best ever. The conversation for Rookie of the Year will only escalate but the heated debate just further highlights how impressive the group has been this season.

Pistons: Cade Cunningham to miss 2nd straight game with illness

Cunningham was ruled out of playing Thursday on the road against the Magic.

Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham was ruled out of playing Thursday on the road against the Orlando Magic due to a non-COVID 19 illness, the team announced.

Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said prior to the game that Cunningham would be a game-time decision and was still congested. Cunningham started to feel sick on Monday night and was held out of playing on Tuesday in a loss to the Miami Heat.

The No. 1 pick is in the midst of his best stretch of the season. He has scored at least 20 points in seven consecutive games, tying the franchise record for the longest streak by a rookie. He is averaging 23.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists during that span.

Casey can see the progress Cunningham has made this season.

The thing with Cade, I always say: He has an ‘it’ factor. He could play like crap the entire game and then in the fourth quarter, he steps up and produces and loves the moment. He is one of those rare guys that really performs well when the moment is tight. He is getting a better feel. I was just watching our game (versus the Magic) in January and (saw) how much he has taken a step forward so that is good to see.

The contest on Thursday was the 16th of the season Cunningham has missed due to various injury or illness. He was sidelined for five games at the beginning of the season with a right ankle sprain and also missed time for the health and safety protocol and a hip pointer.

The Pistons wrap up their three-game road trip Saturday in Cleveland so it is possible that Cunningham is ready to go in that contest. The team has often been cautious with injuries this season so Cunningham will likely be a game-time decision once again.

Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham was ruled out of playing Tuesday on the road versus the Miami Heat, head coach Dwane Casey said prior to the contest.

Cunningham was listed as questionable to play because of a non-COVID 19 illness. Casey said Cunningham started to feel sick on Monday night and went with the team to shootaround but was unable to participate. He remained back in the team hotel for the game.

The contest on Tuesday was the 15th of the season Cunningham has missed due to various injury or illness. He was sidelined for five games at the beginning of the season with a right ankle sprain and also missed time for the health and safety protocol and a hip pointer.

Cade Cunningham joined Isiah Thomas in Pistons history with latest effort

The No. 1 pick produced his sixth straight game with at least 20 points on Friday in a loss to the Celtics.

Cade Cunningham on Friday produced his 10th game of the season with 25 points to lead the Detroit Pistons in a 114-103 loss on the road to the Boston Celtics.

Cunningham scored a team-high 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 41 minutes of work. He recorded 18 points in the first half alone and finished the contest by shooting 10-of-27 from the field, including 3-of-10 from 3-point range.

With the performance, Cunningham joined Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas as the only two players in Pistons history to have 10 or more games with at least 25 points in a season at the age of 20 or younger.

Cunningham is in the midst of his best stretch of the season. He has scored at least 20 points in six consecutive games, averaging 23.2 points, eight rebounds and 5.8 assists during that span. He is just the fourth rookie in team history to accomplish that feat.

The recent run by Cunningham has likely further strengthened his case for Rookie of the Year. The conversation for the award seems to be narrowed down to Cunningham and Evan Mobley at this point with the Pistons guard gaining ground on the Cleveland Cavaliers forward.

Cunningham has reached several impressive benchmarks throughout the season and is just scratching the surface of his potential. Behind his play, the Pistons look to have a bright future ahead.

Evan Mobley favorite to win Rookie of the Year by various NBA writers

A five-person panel of NBA.com writers was nearly unanimous in selecting Mobley as the Rookie of the Year with one month left to play.

Even though Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey recently called Cade Cunningham the NBA Rookie of the Year, it was Evan Mobley that mostly earned that honor from a panel of NBA.com writers.

With one month left in the NBA season, the conversation surrounding the awards races is heating up. From Most Valuable Player to Defensive Player of the Year, there are seemingly plenty of candidates to choose from and that is certainly the case for the top rookie player.

The five-person panel weighed in on four of the major awards races — MVP, ROY, DPOY, Coach of the Year — and was nearly unanimous in selecting Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers as Rookie of the Year at this point of the season.

Writer Player
Steve Aschburner Evan Mobley
Mark Medina Evan Mobley
Shaun Powell Cade Cunningham
John Schuhmann Evan Mobley
Michael C. Wright Evan Mobley

Mobley and Cunningham are among several first-year players that have impressed this season in a rookie class that, as a whole, appears to be one of the best in recent memory. However, there are a couple of other candidates for the award.

In addition to Mobley and Cunningham, there can also be a case made for Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. Jalen Green has also emerged and is playing at a high level as of late for the Houston Rockets.

The Rookie of the Year voting this year will be perhaps the most competitive it has been since Malcolm Brogdon won in 2017 after receiving 64 first-place votes. The final results this year will likely be even closer with the eventual winner garnering fewer votes than Brogdon.

Certainly, the Rookie of the Year voting will be a fun race to watch as will the All-Rookie first team and All-Rookie second team voting. The conversation will only intensify as the season draws to a close and it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

Cade Cunningham: 4th Pistons rookie to score 20 points in 5 straight games

Cunningham is averaging 22.4 points, eight rebounds, 5.8 assists and one steal over his last five games.

No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham on Wednesday registered his fifth straight 20-point outing to lead the Detroit Pistons in a 114-108 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

He finished with 22 points, six assists and four rebounds in 36 minutes of work. He scored 10 points alone in the third quarter as the Pistons led by seven points to begin the final period, but DeMar DeRozan scored 16 of his 36 total points late to lead the Bulls.

With the performance, Cunningham became just the fourth Pistons rookie to record at least 20 points in five consecutive games, joining Dave Bing, Kelly Tripucka and Grant Hill. He is the only rookie to do reach that mark this season.

Cunningham now has 18 20-point games on the season, the most by a rookie. He is averaging 22.4 points, eight rebounds, 5.8 assists and one steal on 45.9% shooting from the field over his last five games as the Pistons have posted a 3-2 record during that span.

The 20-year-old has reached several impressive benchmarks throughout the season and is just scratching the surface of his potential. Behind his play, the Pistons look to have a bright future ahead.

Rookie Power Rankings: Cade Cunningham showing out for red-hot Pistons

Rookie Wire takes a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2021-22 season.

With just over one month to go in the NBA season, teams around the league are looking to finalize preparations for the playoffs or look ahead to their offseason plans.

The league has seen several remarkable performances as of late with some rookie players joining in on the action. From Cade Cunningham to Moses Moody, the rookie class is reminding everyone that they could be perhaps the best in recent memory.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

Pistons’ Dwane Casey on Cade Cunningham: ‘He is Rookie of the Year’

Cunningham earned high praise from the Pistons head coach following his latest performance on Monday.

Dwane Casey on Monday called guard Cade Cunningham the NBA Rookie of the Year, and the No. 1 pick agreed was inclined to agree with his head coach.

Cunningham continued perhaps his best stretch of the season, recording 28 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to lead the Detroit Pistons to an overtime win over the Atlanta Hawks. He scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and overtime period combined.

The 20-year-old produced his 10th game of the season with at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, the most by a rookie. He became the second Pistons rookie (Isiah Thomas) in the last 50 years with 20 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a game.

Casey explained why Cunningham is the Rookie of the Year, in his mind.

He is Rookie of the Year, it is not even close as far as talent evaluation. I’ve been (in the NBA) a long time, have seen a lot of players. The only thing they could hold against us is we’re a young team rebuilding but talent-wise, he is a guy that can finish games for you and that’s what you need in those situations to finish games. He is playing like a 10-year vet so to get 10 assists and 28 points, that is big time. We were trying to go to him down the stretch, which we wanted to. For me, he is the Rookie of the Year just the way he won the game for us tonight.

Cunningham has now recorded four straight 20-point games to give him 17 overall on the season, which leads all first-year players. Behind the play of Cunningham, and several others, the Pistons have won six out of their last eight games.

With the performance, Cunningham is averaging 16.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 51 games. He currently leads the rookie class in scoring average and is second in assists and fourth in rebounding with 17 games left this season.

The possibility of winning the Rookie of the Year award would certainly be an honor for Cunningham, but the guard is focusing more on the Pistons’ success at the moment.

I really like how the Pistons are playing right now. I think we’re playing really hard, playing for each other and I think that is what has led us to winning some games. I really appreciate my teammates trusting me with the ball and allowing me to get things going and I feel like they’re kinda looking at that race too a little bit and twant to put me in the right position but, at this point, we’re really rolling right now. I’m not really too worried about that race as much as getting the building blocks and getting the foundation right for next year for the Pistons. I think I deserve the award but, at the end of the day, it is a trophy and building something good with my team would mean a lot more.

Cunningham is among several first-year players that have impressed this season in a rookie class that, as a whole, appears to be one of the best in recent memory. Of course, it isn’t all that surprising to hear that Casey would vote for his player to win the award.

He will have some stiff competition for the award with the likes of Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley, Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner all in contention.

But, in the eyes of the Pistons, it is Cunningham’s award to lose.

Cade Cunningham reached more Pistons history with latest performance

Cunningham on Friday produced his third straight 20-point game to help the Pistons defeat the Pacers.

Cade Cunningham on Friday produced his third straight 20-point game and flashed more of his clutch gene to help the Detroit Pistons defeat the Indiana Pacers.

Cunningham finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal in 32 minutes during the 111-106 win. He had five points, six rebounds and one key assist late in the fourth quarter as the Pistons finished the contest on a 12-1 run to pull out the victory.

“The biggest play of the game, (Cunningham) had just hit a three,” Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said. “He was driving, he could’ve shot it but he trusted the pass and hit Saddiq (Bey) in the corner for a game-tying three.”

With the performance, Cunningham reached 815 points, 289 rebounds and 255 assists on the season. He became the first player in Pistons history to total at least 800 points, 250 rebounds and 250 assists in their first 50 career games.

Dwane Casey praised Cunningham this week for having that “it” factor. He credited Cunningham for his clutch play throughout the season, and that was once again on display on Friday as the Pistons have won five out of their last seven games.

Behind the play of Cunningham, and several others, the Pistons appear to be playing some of their best basketball of the season. They have struggled with closing out opponents but look to be a team gelling at the right time with the season winding down.

‘I went and got it’: Cade Cunningham reacts to clutch block on Raptors

Cunningham registered his seventh double-double but it was a late block that helped seal the win for the Pistons over the Raptors.

Cade Cunningham registered his seventh double-double of the season, but it was a late block that helped seal the victory for the Detroit Pistons Thursday on the road against the Toronto Raptors.

Cunningham also recorded 22 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals in 38 minutes of work in the 108-106 victory. He became just the fifth Pistons rookie to record multiple games with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Pistons, who led by as many as 18 points, held just a three-point advantage with 14.2 seconds left. The Raptors opted to get a quick layup after a timeout to cut the deficit to one point, but Cunningham was there to reject the attempt by Gary Trent Jr.

Cunningham read the play the entire way to block the shot.

When (Jerami Grant) took the charge, and they didn’t call it, I knew it was going to be awkward and he was going to try to get it up high so I feel like I had good timing on it. I saw it coming so I went and got it.

Toronto recovered the ball following the block, and a 3-pointer by Scottie Barnes fell short. Precious Achiuwa was fouled rebounding the miss by Barnes but only made one free throw as the Pistons held on to defeat the Raptors for the third time this season.

Pistons head coach Dwane Casey praised Cunningham prior to the contest for having that “it” factor. He credited Cunningham for his clutch play throughout the season, and that was once again on display on Thursday for the Pistons.

With the victory, the Pistons have now won four out of their last six games. Included in that span are some impressive over the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets.

Cunningham liked how the Pistons stayed engaged to pull out the win.

I think it just shows our togetherness more than anything. Toronto had all of its fans in there tonight. They really helped the Raptors get their momentum a couple of times and our bench and everyone was super engaged and that helps us end runs and get the game back even.

Behind the play of Cunningham, and several others, the Pistons appear to be playing some of their best basketball of the season. They have struggled with closing out opponents but look to be a team gelling at the right time with the season winding down.
