Injured Jets WR Corey Davis ‘not looking good’ for Week 8

Corey Davis, the Jets’ top receiver, injured his hip in practice. Robert Saleh doesn’t think he’ll play against the Bengals.

The Jets could be without their top receiver against the Bengals.

Corey Davis injured his hip during Thursday’s practice and his availability for Week 8 is “not looking good,” according to Robert Saleh. Saleh called the injury day-to-day.

“We’re still holding on for hope [that he can play],” Saleh added Friday, “but it’s trending in that direction.”

Davis leads the Jets in targets, receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns after signing with the team over the offseason. His absence would give the Jets’ younger receivers a great opportunity against the Bengals. Saleh specifically called out Denzel Mims as someone who could fill Davis’ role on the outside, with Elijah Moore sprinkled in underneath.

Three other Jets were ruled out with injuries for Week 8: Running back Tevin Coleman (hamstring), fullback Trevon Wesco (knee) and edge rusher Bryce Huff (back). Quarterback Joe Flacco, who the Jets traded for earlier this week, will also be inactive. That means Josh Johnson will be Mike White’s backup.

Zach Wilson remains out with a PCL sprain, but Saleh wouldn’t say if the rookie will land on short-term injured reserve.

“He’s been improving, he’s been walking around the building,” Saleh said of Wilson. “He’s in great spirits. He’s been doing everything he needs to do as a professional. We’ll finish today and tomorrow and from there we’ll be able to make decisions.”

Three linebackers could return from injury this week to strengthen the middle of the defense. C.J. Mosley expects to play after missing Week 7 with a hamstring injury, while Quincy Williams will return from concussion protocol. Jarrad Davis will be active after missing the first seven weeks of the season with an ankle injury.

Mike LaFleur, Elijah Moore among Jets’ Studs & Duds in Week 7 loss to Patriots

Most Jets played poorly in the team’s loss to the Patriots, but a few had solid days. A look at Studs and Duds from Week 7:

The Jets played their worst game of the season Sunday, losing big in New England.

Nothing went well on the field and injuries took and kept important playmakers off the field. Mike White replaced an injured Zach Wilson during the second quarter and the defense gave up a season-high 54 points, including four rushing touchdowns.

There were a few solid performances by the Jets, but none were enough for New York to sniff the Patriots’ lead throughout the game. Here are the game’s Studs and Duds from Week 7.

Jets vs. Patriots inactives: Tevin Coleman, C.J. Mosley out for New York

Tevin Coleman, C.J. Mosley and Tyler Kroft won’t play for the Jets in their rematch with the Patriots.

The Jets will be without three key pieces against the Patriots in Week 7, as Tevin Coleman, Tyler Kroft are inactive for New York’s trip to New England.

Coleman injured his hamstring in practice on Friday, while Mosley has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the end of the Jets’ Week 5 loss to the Falcons. Kroft was ruled out with a back injury earlier in the week and has not played since Week 4.

Mosley’s absence leaves a hole in the middle of New York’s defense, which will be filled by rookie Jamien Sherwood. Mike LaFleur’s backfield should be in good shape even without Coleman, as Michael Carter and Ty Johnson have shouldered more of the load in recent weeks. Ryan Griffin will get the start at tight end, with Daniel Brown, Trevon Wesco and Kenny Yeboah working behind him.

Denzel Mims gets the nod at wide receiver over Jeff Smith, as the Jets were left with a decision to make with seven healthy wideouts on the roster. Mims had his best game of the season against Atlanta, catching two passes for 33 yards in limited action.

As for the Patriots, they will be without star linebacker Dont’a Hightower and running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who scored a touchdown in New England’s overtime loss to the Cowboys last weekend. Starting cornerback Jonathan Jones is also out after landing on injured reserve during the week.

Jets trust Jamien Sherwood to fill MIKE role with C.J. Mosley doubtful vs. Patriots

The Jets have confidence that Jamien Sherwood can get the job done at the MIKE if C.J. Mosley can’t play on Sunday.

It looks like Jamien Sherwood is going to have a lot on his plate against the Patriots on Sunday afternoon.

C.J. Mosley is doubtful against New England due to a hamstring injury suffered at the end of the Jets’ Week 5 loss to the Falcons. Assuming Mosley does not play, Sherwood will shift to the MIKE linebacker role and handle all of Mosley’s play-calling duties from the middle of Jeff Ulbrich’s defense.

Sherwood is inexperienced — Robert Saleh conceded as much earlier this week — but New York still trusts him to get the job done if Mosley cannot play. The rookie garnered praise from Ulbrich for his high football I.Q. during the summer. That intelligence and Sherwood’s natural playmaking ability has Gang Green’s defensive coordinator comfortable seeing what Sherwood can accomplish in a key role.

“Jamien, he’s an unusual rookie because, you know, rookies, they’re so known for not necessarily having the awareness, the ability to communicate, all those things, whereas Jamien is not that at all,” Ulbrich said Thursday. “He carries himself like a vet. He communicates like a vet. Although he doesn’t have the experience that a C.J. has, he’s a guy that we have a lot of trust in. So, if C.J. can’t go, Jamien will be our guy.”

Sherwood battled an ankle injury at the beginning of the season but has slowly started to take on a more prominent role in the Jets’ defense — especially since Hamsah Nasirildeen landed on injured reserve. The Auburn product played nearly half of New York’s defensive snaps in London and took advantage of the uptick in playing time to make his fair share of plays.

Could starting at the MIKE take Sherwood’s production up another notch? It won’t be easy for him to go up a Patriots offense that is led by Josh McDaniels, who is notorious for exposing young defenders, but the Jets are hopeful the 21-year-old can slot in for Mosley if needed.

“He studies his butt off,” Saleh said of Sherwood before praising the fifth-round pick’s tackling skills. “He belongs.”

At the very least, the Jets trust Sherwood. That speaks volumes about where he is at so early in his career.

Jets vs. Patriots Week 7 injury report: New England submits massive list of injuries

The Jets are dealing with some aches and pains, but the Patriots have 16 players on their injury report.

The Jets are dealing with some aches and pains, but the Patriots have 16 players on their injury report.

New York will be without starting TE Tyler Kroft (back). LB C.J. Mosley (hamstring), meanwhile, is a game-time decision.

There’s nothing unsurprising there, but a member of Gang Green’s backfield also popped up on the injury report Friday. You can see the full Week 7 report below, including the Patriots’ massive list of injuries.

Jets LB C.J. Mosley a game-time decision vs. Patriots

Jets LB C.J. Mosley will be a game-time decision against the Patriots on Sunday.

C.J. Mosley will be a game-time decision against the Patriots on Sunday.

The Jets linebacker is dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in New York’s Week 5 loss to Atlanta in London. Gang Green won’t decide on Mosley’s Week 7 status until Sunday morning.

“C.J.’s gonna go down to the wire,” Robert Saleh said Friday.

Should Mosley miss his first game of the season, rookie Jamien Sherwood will step in as New York’s MIKE linebacker. Saleh and DC Jeff Ulbrich have both expressed confidence in the first-year pro’s ability to lead New York’s defense.

“He studies his butt off,” Saleh said of Sherwood, adding that the fifth-round pick is already an advanced tackler. “He belongs.”

Saleh added that Tyler Kroft is likely a no-go on Sunday. The tight end is recovering from a back injury and “doesn’t look good” for the Patriots rematch.

Who will Jets’ MIKE linebacker be if C.J. Mosley can’t play vs. Patriots?

Jamien Sherwood would work as the Jets’ MIKE linebacker if C.J. Mosley (hamstring) can’t play against the Patriots in Week 7.

C.J. Mosley popped up on the Jets’ post-practice injury report on Wednesday after not practicing due to a hamstring injury suffered against the Falcons before the bye week.

New York’s veteran linebacker has been uberly productive in his return to the field this season, but he is now in danger of missing the team’s Week 7 trip to New England to take on the Patriots.

Jamien Sherwood is next in line to play the MIKE linebacker role in Jeff Ulbrich’s defense if Mosley cannot play against the Patriots, according to Robert Saleh. Most of the rookie’s snaps so far this season have come on the strong side in place of the injured Jarrad Davis.

Mosley leads the Jets in tackles with 45 to go along with a forced fumble and a sack. He also handles play-calling duties from the middle of New York’s defense. That responsibility would shift to Sherwood if Mosley is unable to suit up.

“Obviously when it comes to those lower-extremity injuries, you just kind of feel the player out. Each one is different,” Saleh said. “We’re 10 days out now, so we’ll see how the week goes.”

Mosley, who experienced the ill effects of coming back too soon from a groin injury in his first season with the Jets, is proceeding with caution despite the groin strain being more serious than his barking hamstring.

“It’s something that if you get back too early or you try to push too fast, it can make things worse,” Mosley said. “Honestly, it’s just a day-to-day thing.”

Even with Sherwood potentially shifting to middle linebacker, the Jets would be left razor-thin at linebacker without Mosley. Davis is still out and Hamsah Nasirildeen is on injured reserve, leaving Mosley, Sherwood and Quincy Williams as New York’s starters. Blake Cashman, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, has yet to play a defensive snap this season.

Mosley is not the Jets’ only banged-up player coming out of the bye week, as Tyler Kroft (back) missed practice and Marcus Maye (ankle) was limited on Wednesday. Adrian Colbert (concussion), Nathan Shepherd (knee) and Jeff Smith (concussion) were full participants.

The Jets’ Week 5 loss to the Falcons in London was a tale of two halves. New York allowed 20 points in the first half, but buckled down over the final 30 minutes and nearly came back to overcome its 17-point deficit.

The Falcons ultimately proved to be too much for Gang Green, as Atlanta held on for a 27-20 win secured by a late Mike Davis rushing touchdown. Matt Ryan had his way with the Jets through his air, with the bulk of his passes going to rookie tight end Kyle Pitts in his breakout game.

Here are the studs and duds from New York’s loss as it prepares to enter its bye week.

Jets LB C.J. Mosley has advice for London football fans: Download Madden

Jets LB C.J. Mosley thinks playing Madden is the best way for those in London to familiarize themselves with American football.

The NFL started the London Games in 2007 to broaden its horizons and appeal to its fans across the pond. The league has played nearly 30 games overseas since, with the Jets and the Falcons becoming the 29th matchup on Sunday.

Even with the NFL’s best efforts, there are still a good amount of football fans in London who are still relatively unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the sport. Most fans know enough about American football to enjoy the game whenever two teams come to the country, but aren’t up to speed on the nuances that make football arguably the most popular sport in the United States.

C.J. Mosley offered advice to fans who don’t quite understand American football on Friday, emploring them to pick up a copy of Madden to learn the game.

“I guess it depends how much they know about football,” Mosley said. “You have to know the rules a little bit to understand what’s going on. When I first learned about [soccer] here, it was through FIFA. I didn’t know the rules of soccer until I started playing the video game. That’s how I kind of got into it.

“My advice for the people who don’t know it: download Madden. Go play Madden and figure it out on the fly.”

Madden has long helped American fans of all ages fall in love with football, making Mosley’s suggestion a good one. Maybe it can have the same effect on fans in London before the Jets’ march into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‘Cheat code’ C.J. Mosley did more against the Titans than anyone realized

C.J. Mosley littered the stat sheet against the Titans, but it was the linebacker’s mind that really made an impact on the Jets’ first win.

C.J. Mosley has played like a man on a mission so far this season, a pleasant surprise for the Jets after he missed nearly two full years.

The veteran inside linebacker has been all over the place in Jeff Ulbrich’s defense, making 38 tackles in New York’s first four games. Thirteen of those stops came against the Titans, as Mosley played an instrumental role in the Jets’ first win and relatively limiting Derrick Henry.

Henry rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown in Week 4, but he averaged less than five yards per carry. Mosley was there to greet him before he could get to the second level more often than not, preventing him from gaining any sort of steam to break off the kind of long run that makes him so dangerous with his combination of power and speed.

Mosley’s role in the success of Ulbrich’s defense against the Titans went far beyond the box score, though. Mosley took matters into his own hands at one point, checking out of a defensive call — which has never happened under Ulbrich and Robert Saleh’s watch — just before Tennessee snapped the ball in a key third-down situation.

The end result? A drive-ending sack on Ryan Tannehill.

“He saw something he didn’t like,” Saleh said Monday. “He got us into another defense and the entire sideline, all of us coaches were like, ‘What is he doing? What is he doing?’ We’re just yelling at the linebacker coach and he got us into the perfect play call and we got a sack because the quarterback hitched. I was like, ‘Well, that’s why he’s an All-Pro.'”

Mosley showed the value he brings to the Jets’ defense in just one play. New York has been missing him in the middle of its defense ever since Mosley got hurt against the Patriots midway through 2019. The 29-year-old has taken it upon himself to make up for lost time, filling the void and thriving in a defense that he did not profile as an ideal fit in after spending his entire career as a 3-4 inside linebacker.

“He’s like a cheat code,” Saleh said. “His mind is a little different.”
