2020 NFL Draft: 5 LBs for Bills to consider in second round

Here are five linebackers that could be on the board when the Bills make their pick on April 24th.

The Buffalo Bills first scheduled draft selection won’t occur until Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft, as the team picks at No. 54 overall.

Luckily, the Bills do not have a glaring need on their roster, making this year’s draft quite intriguing. Buffalo’s front office, led by general manager Brandon Beane, can go in a multitude of directions with the pick, leaving quite a bit of interest and uncertainty with whom the Bills could select.

This installment of our position-by-position series looks at the linebacker prospects and which players could still be on the board when the Bills make their first selection at the upcoming draft:

Current roster

The linebacker position is a relative strength on the Bills roster. Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano have complete control over two of the starting linebacker positions in Buffalo’s nickel defense. Edmunds led all Bills defenders by playing in 94.7 percent of the team’s snaps on defense, while Milano was fifth among defenders, playing 86.3 percent.

When Buffalo does move into a 4-3 defense, they will rely on the recentlight signed AJ Klein, a recent free-agent signing, to play opposite Milano. The Bills also have Tyler Matakevich, Corey Thompson, Vosean Joseph, and Tyrel Dodson as depth players and special teams contributors.

Buffalo could look for an athletic player to provide better depth at the linebacker position. The second round is most likely too early for the team to select a player at this position. However, if there are any fears that they may not be able re-sign Milano, who will be a free agent at the conclusion of the 2020 season, they may find a player who could spell Milano in the long run in this draft. At this point, though, there’s a minuscule chance that Brandon Beane would allow Milano to see the open market. The Bills also will have to find their new Lorenzo Alexander too, which will be easier said than done.

Akeem Davis-Gaither | Appalachian State

Davis-Gaither is a small school standout in this draft. He eclipsed the century mark in total tackles in each of the past two years. During his senior year, Davis-Gaither set a career-high with five sacks. He’s a bit lighter at 224 pounds, fitting into the stature of a hybrid role. He did fairly well as a blitzer. He’s able to get through gaps easily. However, Davis-Gaither sometimes gets hung up getting off blocks. But he can do a lot as a defender, someone who could eventually be eased into an Alexander type mold as a strong pass defender and pass rusher.

2020 NFL Draft: Full 7-round order, trade values for Bills, NFL picks

Plus, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane hasn’t been afraid to make moves on draft day. Whether it’s an early or late round, could the Bills be on the move? Maybe.

The 2020 NFL Draft is slowly approaching. The Buffalo Bills don’t hold a first-round pick, but there’s still going to be plenty of picks coming to the team.

2020 NFL Draft: Bills select Josh Uche, Kyle Dugger in CBS Sports mock

In CBS Sports’ latest three-round mock draft, the Bills use those two picks to select defensive end Josh Uche and safety Kyle Dugger.

The Bills no longer have pick No. 22 at the 2020 NFL Draft, but there’s still picks 54 and 86 to consider. Those two selections in the second and third rounds, respectively, could land the team some impact players.

In CBS Sports‘ latest three-round mock draft, the Bills use those to select defensive end Josh Uche and safety Kyle Dugger.

Here’s the breakdown on Uche:

The Bills lost Shaq Lawson in free agency and signed Mario Addison, but Uche provides even more edge rush presence for a talented defense.

And on Dugger:

Dugger is a small-schooler who brings versatility to the table, and he should fit in well on Sean McDermott’s defense.

Bills Wire previously reported that Uche met with the Bills at the recent Senior Bowl, so to some extent, there’s interest. Buffalo did add plenty to their defensive line via free agency with defensive end Mario Addison highlighting that overhaul. But Addison is 32 and Jerry Hughes in 31. Buffalo needs some youthful depth there so defensive end is certainly in play with their second-round pick.

In 12 games last season, Uche had 7.6 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss for the Wolverines. He also forced a fumble and had a pass defended with 33 total tackles.

At about 6-foot-2, Uche is a tad undersized for potentially playing as a defensive end in Buffalo’s 4-3 defensive scheme. According to Pro Football Focus, Uche did play 170 of his 470 defensive snaps this season off the ball, though. So he has experience with his hand on and off the ground.

The Bills also need a replacement for linebacker Lorenzo Alexander next season thanks to his retirement and PFF notes that “a move off-ball could be in his future.”

Dugger is a product of Lenoir-Rhyne, a DII program. With a name like that which you haven’t heard much of, Dugger would be very much a raw talent. But from the sounds of it, a hybrid linebacker-safety sounds much like Matt Milano. The current Bills linebacker is certainly a playmaker, but could Dugger also find his way to fill in for Lorenzo Alexander in a nickel-type role?

Regardless of whoever replaces Alexander, both Uche and Dugger being compared to Alexander would give the Bills versatility on defense, something the club covets all over their roster.

NFL Scouting Combine tracker: Who has met with the Bills?

A tracker of players the Buffalo Bills have met with at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

The Buffalo Bills and NFL are getting after it at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine this week. The annual event ahead of that year’s NFL Draft is… rather uneventful.

Let’s be honest, there’s little actual football being put on display, but prospects entering the draft are giving in their all in the yearly event held in Indianapolis. At every combine, players get up at the podium and typically tell a group of reporters which teams they’ve met with.

Throughout the combine this week, Bills Wire will keep a tracker of which prospects have said they’ve met with the Bills this week. Players can do so following the combine as well via pre-draft visits, but in Indy, many quick and “informal” chats with players will be scheduled.

Visit the current list below and be sure to check back throughout to week to find out which prospects might be on the Bills’ radar ahead of the draft:

WR KJ Hill | Ohio State

The Bills have met with KJ Hill, according to 13WHAM’s Jenna Cottrell. Via his career as a Buckeye, Hill said he’s “not afraid to play in the cold.” Hill is not the prototypical typical wideout prospect many peg for the Bills, though. He’s likely going to play a slot receiver role in the NFL, where Buffalo already has the likely of Cole Beasley, among others.

WR Lynn Bowden | Kentucky

Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll loves his trick players, think of Isaiah McKenzie. Kentucky’s Lynn Bowden, who said he’s met with the Bills, can quite literally do it all. Clearly he can line up as a playmaker on offense, but also has played QB and returned kicks. He won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most outstanding all-purpose player.

WR KJ Hamler | Penn State

Another smaller, not exactly the type of wide receiver the Bills need, met with Buffalo, per WIVB-TV. Hamler does provide versatility as a ball catcher, most likely from the slot, and return man. He also has coveted speed. In college, he suffered an ACL tear in 2017 as well.

TE Dalton Keene | Virginia Tech

After missing out on Greg Olsen, the Bills aren’t sitting on their hands. The Bills are meeting with tight ends at the combine, starting with VT’s Dalton Keene, via WIVB. He caught 59 catches for 748 yards and eight scores in college, and is looking to get Virginia Tech back on the draft board. Virginia Tech’s streak of 25 straight years with at least one player taken in the draft ended last season. Among the most recent ones that was draft? Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in 2018.
