Kings-Lakers recap: Sacramento comeback spoils LeBron’s return

The Lakers lost a 10-point lead after three quarters to the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

The Sacramento Kings spoiled what was supposed to be a celebratory night for the Los Angeles Lakers with a 110-106 comeback victory. The Lakers led 88-78 after three quarters only to lose in the final period. Tyrese Haliburton was the star for Sacramento, finishing with 23 points and 10 assists. LeBron James finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and five turnovers in 32 minutes of action.

The Kings took a 106-101 lead with just under two minutes left on a 3-pointer from Terence Davis. A 3-pointer by LeBron James cut the lead back to 106-104 but nevertheless, the Lakers were in the unexpected position of playing from behind against a Kings without two of their top three leading scorers.

A block by Anthony Davis gave the Lakers new life with 20 seconds left down 108-106. The Kings stopped the potential transition opportunity, forcing LeBron James to call a timeout with seven seconds left.

Lakers at Kings: Lakers close out first half of season in Sacramento

The Los Angeles Lakers will be looking to end the first half of the season on a strong note against the Sacramento Kings.

The Los Angeles Lakers only have one game standing between them and their first extended break of the season as they head north to Sacramento to face off against the Kings in the Lakers’ first half of the season finale. The Lakers also have a fresh opportunity to get back into the win column heading into their nine-day break after losing on Tuesday night to the Phoenix Suns. But they will do so without LeBron James, who will miss his first game of the season.

The Kings have been searching for wins for a lot longer than the Lakers. The Kings have lost 10 of their last 11 games coming into Wednesday, with their loss on Sunday being the most agonizing of them all, as they lost an 8-point lead in the final 53 seconds to lose to the Charlotte Hornets, 127-126.

Former Oklahoma star Buddy Hield makes NBA history with 1,000th three point shot

Former Oklahoma star Buddy Hield became the fastest in NBA history to 1,000 made three-pointers on Sunday night.

[jwplayer eVnA9Zz2]

Former Oklahoma star Buddy Hield has been a very solid NBA player over his first five professional seasons, but has largely flown under the radar of just how good he has really been.

On Sunday night, Hield hit a milestone that puts that on full display as he made his 1,000th career three-pointer, becoming the fastest player in league history to do so in terms of number of games played. He got there in just his 350th career game, which shattered the previous record held by Stephen Curry who did it in 369 games.

The record-breaking shot came off of a pass from teammate De’Aaron Fox in the middle of the third quarter of the Sacramento Kings’ game with the Charlotte Hornets.

Hield is the all-time leader in three-pointers made in Sooners basketball history by a wide margin making 349 of them over his four seasons in Norman, including an astonishing 147 knocked down in his senior year to help get Oklahoma to the Final Four in 2016. Of course, the team Twitter account was sure to congratulate the former Wooden Award winner.

Hield and his Kings will next be in action on Wednesday night at home against the Los Angeles Lakers at 9:00 p.m. CT.

Playing in his first regular-season game in over two calendar years, John Wall led Houston in assists with nine and finished second in scoring with 22 points. Meanwhile, his perimeter defense helped limit rising Kings star De’Aaron Fox into a 9-of-23 shooting night (39.1%) on New Year’s Eve.

Christian Wood added 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Eric Gordon scored an efficient 17 points on 50% shooting off Houston’s bench.

Advice and prediction

Harden has eclipsed Saturday’s over/under figure of 31.5 in each of his three games in the 2020-21 season, and there’s no reason to expect a big decline on Saturday. In fact, Harden’s game-high 33 points on Thursday — with 16 in a frantic final four minutes — came despite “The Beard” largely looking out of sync over the initial three-and-a-half quarters.

If Harden returns to his usual level of All-Star consistency on Saturday, those points could come earlier, and Houston might not need that type of closing flurry to claim another victory at Toyota Center.

Prediction: 119-109, Rockets

Buddy Hield sprinted out of the arena after his wild, game-winning shot in overtime

This is the best way to celebrate a buzzer-beater.

The Denver Nuggets had the ball out of bounds with six seconds left in overtime against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night, and the score tied at 122. If you’re the Nuggets, you’re feeling pretty good in that moment — they ran an inbounds play to their star big man Nikola Jokic, with a chance to win the game.

Then everything went bad for Denver.

Jokic was stripped, and the Kings had a crazy chance to run the length of the floor and score. The ball got pushed to Harrison Barnes, who leapt up for a dunk … and missed.

Then, showing a really nice awareness for the moment, trailing Kings player Buddy Hield leaped up, and tapped the ball toward the hoop. It was all he could do in the time remaining, and his tip-in worked. The ball fell through the goal, and then Hield had my favorite celebration of the young season — he just straight up sprinted out of the arena.

Opening night or not, that’s a huge win for the Kings going up against one of the powers of the Western Conference. Sacramento had seven players finish in double figures in scoring, and they did an excellent job containing the Nuggets’ Jamal Murray, who finished with only nine points and four assists in 34 minutes.

This is a team that can cause opponents some headaches this year.

Former Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield hits game-winning tip-in in opener

Former Oklahoma basketball star Buddy Hield tipped in the game-winner in Sacramento’s season-opening win over Denver.

The new NBA season is upon us as Wednesday night marked the first full slate of the season.

Former Oklahoma basketball star Buddy Hield is beginning his fifth year in the league and his fourth full season with the Sacramento Kings. He got it started with a bang, as he tipped in the game-winning basket at the buzzer in overtime for the Kings to pull off the season-opening upset over the Denver Nuggets.

Hield has progressed in his professional career as more and more of an impact player as he has averaged over 30 minutes a night the past two seasons in Sacramento. This season is off to a pretty good start.

In addition to the game-winner, Hield had 22 points on 7/15 shooting with four rebounds and three assists. He started the game and played a whopping 41 minutes with the overtime period.

Now 1-0, Hield and the Kings will next take on the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.

Buddy Hield liked a tweet that sure made it seem he’s unhappy with the Kings

Poor Kings, man.

Buddy Hield’s relationship with the Sacramento Kings has been, uh, rocky. And that’s probably putting it kindly at this point.

The Kings played hardball with him when negotiating his extension last season and he clearly didn’t like it. Eventually, they settled on a four-year, $94 million deal that could reach $106 million if he hits certain performance bonuses.

It’s hard to hit those bonuses from the bench, though. So, naturally, when he was benched last season in place of Bogdan Bogdanovic, he wasn’t happy about that either.

Things are on the up and up now, though! Bodganovic is with the Atlanta Hawks now after the Kings declined to match their free agency offer, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. And, the Kings apparently believe Hield is part of their “young core.”

So, of course, Buddy should be happy now, right? Uh, not necessarily. If his latest liked tweet is any indication, he’s still might be unhappy with he Kings.

Here’s the full tweet.

WHEW that is messy. Looks like the Kings picked the wrong shooting guard to keep, although, it didn’t seem like Bogdanovic wanted to stay either.

The Kings, man. They just can’t catch a break.

Another trade proposal has Nets landing Buddy Hield

What do the Brooklyn Nets do if they’re unable to retain Joe Harris this offseason?

[jwplayer gUn7mWDC]

Joe Harris has given every indication he plans to re-sign with Brooklyn this offseason. Nets general manager Sean Marks made clear retaining the sharpshooter is his top priority heading into free agency.

But things happen.

Harris is in a position to command quite a bit of money as one of the NBA’s best sharpshooters — in an era where teams value long-range shooting more than anything else. As unlikely as it seems, some team could find a way to sweep him off his feet.

If the Nets lose out on Harris, they’ll need to find another deep threat. Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield seems like an attainable option, with Alex Schiffer and John Hollinger of The Athletic proposing a deal to deliver him to Brooklyn, which only differs slightly from Bleacher Report’s Hield-to-Brooklyn trade idea from September.

In The Athletic’s deal, the Nets would offer the Kings Spencer Dinwiddie and Taurean Prince. Prince was also part of the B/R trade proposal, along with Jarrett Allen and Rodions Kurucs.

“I like this deal more for the Nets if they lose Harris; an [Kyrie] Irving-Hield-Harris perimeter trio would get absolutely torched, but replacing Harris’s shooting would be a must if he left,” Hollinger said. “Hield’s contract is a minus and the resultant tax issues are real, but he’s a perfect weapon to have next to Durant and Irving, even better than Harris in this regard actually. Also, the money on his deal stairsteps downward in the future seasons, from $24.9 million in 2020-21 to just $19 million in 2023-24, which could make this financial pill easier to swallow.”

Losing Harris shouldn’t happen but it could. However, entering 2020-21 without someone filling his role is inexcusable. If Harris takes his talents elsewhere, this is a deal the Nets need to look into.

Former Kings coach Dave Joerger candidate to join Doc Rivers, Sixers

Former Sacramento Kings coach Dave Joerger is a candidate to join Doc Rivers and his staff with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a new era in their franchise history with the hire of Doc Rivers as their new head coach. Rivers brings in a level of credibility that is huge for this franchise and it is now time for Rivers to build his staff.

While he was not able to bring in Alvin Gentry who was a serious candidate to join his staff, another big name that has popped up is former Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings coach Dave Joerger.

Joerger interviewed with the Indiana Pacers for their current opening at head coach, but he is now considered a candidate to join Rivers’ staff with the Sixers.

Joerger has been a head coach for six seasons in the league and he has a 245-247 record leading Memphis to the playoffs in all three of his seasons there before finishing 98-148 in three seasons with the Kings. One connection that should intrigue Sixers fans is his connection to Buddy Hield who would be a great addition to this team. Hield had the best numbers of his career under Joerger and it sounds like it would be another reason for him to force a trade to Philadelphia. [lawrence-related id=38341,38338,38329]

Bell Ringer Podcast: what can Sixers learn from Heat, Lakers for future?

The Bell Ringer Podcast returns to discuss what the Philadelphia 76ers can learn from the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Bell Ringer Podcast hosted by Sixers Wire returns as host Ky Carlin again welcomes in Nick Friar to discuss a few things the Philadelphia 76ers can learn from both the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers.

A long 2019-20 season came to an end with LeBron James leading the Lakers to the 17th title in franchise history and there are a lot of things Philadelphia can learn from both Miami and Los Angeles. Ky and Nick get into those lessons as well as what the Sixers could do to get Buddy Hield to Philadelphia and team him with Joel Embiid.
