There’s a reason the Bucs didn’t draft a developmental QB

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opted not to take a developmental quarterback in the 2020 draft. See what Bruce Arians had to say about it.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a solid 2020 draft, addressing needs along the offensive line and in the secondary.

With a slew of quality talent coming to Tampa Bay now, this rookie class has a chance to add even more versatility to a Bucs team with championship expectations.

But while the team added a tackle, wide receiver and two running backs in the draft, they chose not to draft a developmental quarterback, like Jacob Eason or Jake Fromm, to sit and learn behind Tom Brady. Turns out, there’s a reason Bruce Arians did that.

Not sure if Arians has a specific player in mind, but there are some options out there. Truthfully, I think it was the smart move by the Bucs. The team is in win-now mode, so every draft pick they use needs to go towards improving this team immediately, not two years down the road. Plus, Tampa Bay already has Blaine Gabbert backing up Brady, so any rookie QB would likely be third on the depth chart all season.

In the end, the Bucs made some solid picks that will likely pay immediate dividends. And that’s what matters most.

Dan Hanzus offers up the ‘most likely scenario’ for Jameis Winston’s future

See where Dan Hanzus of “Around the NFL” believes Jameis Winston will wind up once the free agency dust settles.

The NFL QB carousel is about to go into overdrive in less than two weeks when the new league year begins. The 2020 NFL free agency class will feature some big-name quarterbacks like Philip Rivers and Tom Brady, both of whom could be leaving the only franchises they’ve ever known (Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers have already officially parted ways).

The Buccaneers are likely going to be active riders on the carousel this year, as they have to address their own QB situation. The team could very well look to free agency to find a veteran QB, or, they could opt to bring Jameis Winston back for another year, despite the fact he threw 30 interceptions in 2019 and the team finished with a losing record again (7-9).

There are hundreds of scenarios that could play out for every quarterback on the market this year, which is why Dan Hanzus of Around the NFL tried to make sense of it all by offering up his best/worst-case scenario for 15 QBs, including Winston.

While Hanzus says the best scenario for Winston would be getting one more shot with the Bucs, his worst-case scenario is a dark one for the former No. 1 overall pick. “Tampa Bay walks away, and Winston wanders the free agency wilderness looking for a starting job that might not exist,” says Hanzus about the worst-case scenario for Winston.

As for what he thinks will most likely become of the QB? “Wearing a new uniform, Winston is on the sideline in Week 1 as someone’s backup.”

Again, that scenario isn’t all that bad, especially if Winston signs with a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers. He could watch and learn for a year sitting behind Roethlisberger and then inherit the starting gig in 2021. Plus, he’d get to play for Mike Tomlin, one of the best coaches in the NFL and an overall great guy. I think there are lots of quarterbacks in the NFL who would love an option like that.

One NFL expert predicts Jameis Winston plays for another Florida team in 2020

Find out where one NFL expert believes Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston will land in 2020.

The 2019 season has had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their fans on Winston Watch.

The former number one overall pick, who is playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, has put up big passing numbers this season and is on pace to surpass 5,000 yards. But, he’s also thrown a league-leading 23 interceptions, further adding to the argument that Winston can’t protect the football.

While some fans may want the team to start over at the position and let Bruce Arians pick a new quarterback to groom, many experts are beginning to feel that a return to Tampa Bay is the most likely scenario for Winston. However, there’s one NFL expert who believes that while Winston will play in Florida next year, it won’t be for the Bucs.

Per Kevin Seifert of ESPN: Where will Jameis Winston be playing in 2020?

“Miami, to compete for the starting job. I understand the investment the Buccaneers have made in Winston and the benefits of his aggressive downfield nature. But I don’t believe that Bruce Arians, or any coach who wants to win, can tolerate a player who is leading the NFL in turnovers (28) in his fifth season. It’s an ongoing issue that is only getting worse. The Dolphins are the kind of team that might choose him for the short term rather than start a rookie.”

That’s a hard scenario to envision, but stranger things have happened in the NFL. Who could’ve predicted at this time last year that Odell Beckham Jr. would be a Cleveland Brown?

Still, the safe money seems to be on Winston under center for Tampa Bay in 2020, for better or worse.
