This rookie is topping Tom Brady in jersey sales since the draft

Find out which rookie from the 2020 draft has been topping Bucs QB Tom Brady in jersey sales since the draft.

Tom Brady’s arrival to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers set off some mild controversy when it came to what number he’d wear with his new team. After donning the No. 12 during his 20 years with the Patriots, many wondered whether the future Hall of Famer would get the number from wide receiver Chris Godwin.

In the end, TB12 kept his name and Godwin changed to No. 14. Fans will also be happy to know they won’t have to see Brady in those alarm clock uniforms, as the Bucs unveiled a new look at the beginning of last month, which is a call back to their glory years and easily one of the top uniform redesigns of the offseason.

But while Brady’s Tampa Bay jersey is a hot-ticket item right now, it turns out a newly drafted rookie has been outselling him since the 2020 NFL draft. And, it’s another quarterback playing in Florida: Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa.

Per Nick Shook of NFL.com:

“Tagovailoa is the leading jersey seller in the NFL, according to NFL Shop jersey sales tracked by Fanatics, which powers the league’s merchandising site. Tagovailoa’s aqua No. 1 jersey is selling faster than any other in the NFL, and the white version of that jersey ranks second — ahead of Tom Brady’s new shirts, which come in places 3-5 (with the pewter alternate leading the trio!).

I love the fact that the pewter alternate is the top-selling Brady jersey. Tagovailoa may be the popular new kid on the block right now, but if he can’t stay healthy and produce on the field, those sales numbers will take a hit.

Chris Godwin shows off his new threads and number on Instagram

Take a look at Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin’s latest Instagram story where he puts his new uniform on full display.

When Tom Brady decided to make Tampa Bay his new home, Bucs fans everywhere were thrilled at the thought of having a six-time Super Bowl champion under center for their team. Plus, Brady would have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at his disposal, both of whom had over 1,000-receiving yards last season.

But, Brady’s arrival also created a somewhat awkward situation for Godwin. The receiver was the owner of Brady’s infamous No. 12 jersey, and had worn the number since his high school days in Delaware and while at Penn State.

Fortunately, Godwin and Brady worked things out, and the receiver gave the future Hall of Famer the number and switched over to No. 14. Now, with the Bucs unveiling new uniforms for 2020, Godwin posted the below image on his Instagram story, showing off not only his new threads, but new number, too.

Take a look.

A brief look at the Bucs’ jerseys over the years

Take a look now at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ jerseys through the years.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave their fans a treat today by unveiling their new uniforms for 2020. As most people can see, the jerseys are pretty much a callback to the uniforms they wore prior to the 2014 redesign, which didn’t go over as well as the team had hoped.

That means new Bucs quarterback Tom Brady won’t have to wear those alarm clock numbers now. Instead, the Bucs can kick off the Brady era in style. Plus, if a return to the playoffs is in their future, they want to look their best, especially if it’ll be their first postseason appearance in over a decade.

Some fans are certainly a little disappointed to see that the Bucs didn’t go even further back in their redesign by bringing back the creamsicle jerseys of yesteryear. Still, the new look is better than what they had.

Take a look now at the Bucs’ jerseys through the years.

Not to be that guy, but that first picture is incorrect in terms of the year. The Bucs’ inaugural season was 1976, but the quarterback in the picture above is none other than Doug Williams, who was drafted by the Bucs in the 1978 draft.

So, who was Tampa Bay’s quarterback in 1976? Just some guy named Steve Spurrier.

Here’s a sneak peek at what the new Bucs jerseys might look like

Paul Lukas over at Uni Watch has given us an idea of what the new Buccaneers uniforms might look like.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team on the rise after a strong 4-2 finish to the 2019 season. So, what better way to turn the page and look towards the future than with a jersey redesign?

The Bucs announced recently that they will be ditching their uniforms — which came into effect back in 2014 — in favor of something a little less… well, ridiculous. (Tampa Bay’s jerseys were one of the nicest in the league before someone thought alarm clock numbers would be a nice upgrade.)

While we’ll have to wait until April for the official reveal, Paul Lukas over at Uni Watch has seen the new jerseys and given us a description of what they look like.

Here’s part of what Lukas said:

•  There are two jerseys (red and white) and two sets of pants (pewter and white). The pewter pants will not be as shiny/metellic as the old ones, because that’s the reality of the fabric being used these days.

• The red jersey has white block numbers outlined in black (but no orange layer, at least that I could see). The “Buccaneers” wordmark has been restored to the chest, but this time it’s rendered in black (not white, as it had been in the Super Bowl set). Block TV numbers are on the shoulders. The Bucs’ current ship logo appears on the sleeves. The back of the jersey has the same white numbers outlined in black, along with white nameplate lettering.

While Lukas was unable to take actual photos of the jerseys, he did have some help in putting together a rendering of what they look like.

Take a look.

It definitely looks like they are going back to the old style they wore prior to the change in 2014. Sadly, it appears as though we won’t be getting any orange uniforms this time around. But, hey, this is a step in the right direction.

What do you guys think?
