Social media reacts to Tampa Bay’s horrendous Week 17 performance

Bucs fans might be popping open the champagne a bit early after having to watch that awful performance with the division on the line.

The moment was perhaps a little big for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Bucs had a chance to clinch the NFC South at home against the New Orleans Saints on New Year’s Eve, but they did not, in fact, do that. Instead, they got absolutely embarrassed in their own house, losing 23-13 in a game that was not nearly as close as that score may have indicated otherwise. Bucs fans are likely chugging as much champagne as they can muster before the ball drops to forget this loss, but in the meantime, plenty of upset fans sounded off on social media.

Here’s what Bucs fans and neutral pundits were saying about the dreadful game:

Bucs fall to Saints 23-13

The Bucs were faced with the moment of clinching the division at home — and responded by playing one of their worst games of the year.

The Buccaneers road to the playoffs and the division title hit a speed bump in their last home game of the regular season, falling to the New Orleans Saints 23-15. Tampa Bay was simply dominated by the Saints, committing four turnovers, the most of any game this season.

There was no phase of the game in which the Bucs were successful. The offense was undone by its own mistakes, the defense could not stop the Saints offense until too late into the game and special teams frequently gave New Orleans short fields. Every time something appeared to go right, misfortune snatched it away from Tampa Bay.

The first half went about as poorly as possible for Tampa Bay. The Saints opened the game by orchestrating a 14-play touchdown drive. The Bucs responded by going three-and-out on their first offensive series. Baker Mayfield responded on their second drive by throwing an interception to Alontae Taylor at New Orleans’ two-yard line.

The Saints scored again late in the second quarter off a 22-yard touchdown catch by Taysom Hill. Another quick Bucs three-and-out and poor Jake Camarda punt later, the Saints closed out the half with a field goal, putting them up 17-0.

The second half did not start much better for the Bucs offense, going three-and-out once again. However, the Bucs defense tightened up and forced a three-and-out of their own. Tampa Bay’s offense appeared to get going on the next drive, getting into New Orleans territory before Rachaad White fumbled at the 25-yard line. The Saints recovered and were rewarded with a field goal.

After trading punts, the Bucs were on the move again but Mayfield threw his second interception of the game to Johnathan Abram. The Bucs quarterback had not thrown more than one interception in any game this season.

The Bucs ended the shutout on their next drive, that included a 35-yard completion to Mike Evans and a fourth-and-six conversion by Chris Godwin. Following the fourth down conversion, Mayfield fired a 22-yard dart to Trey Palmer in the endzone:

The Saints all but sealed the game with a four-minute field goal drive, burning too much clock to allow a Bucs comeback. The Bucs nearly had a window back into the game when Baker Mayfield found Trey Palmer for a 62 -yard completion. However, as was emblematic of the Bucs’ day, Palmer fumbled the ball which the Saints recovered.

The Bucs had one last gasp when Baker Mayfield connected with Chris Godwin for a 47-yard touchdown. Tampa Bay’s two-point conversion attempt appeared to succeed on a Godwin reception, but it was later found Godwin stepped out of bounds before the catch, nullifying the conversion. Mayfield threw a third interception on the second attempt, taking the final score to 23-13.

Baker Mayfield finished the day going 22-for-33 with 309 pass yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Derek Carr went 24-for-32 for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Rachaad White had just 42 yards on the ground, and Trey Palmer led the team with 82 receiving yards. Tampa Bay’s defense recorded just one sack and no quarterback hits and allowed 108 rush yards.

Despite the loss, the Bucs are still in control of their playoff destiny. A win over Carolina next week wins them the NFC South and a trip to the playoffs. However, another performance like this could end Tampa Bay’s season in heartbreak and possibly the delivery of pink slips to the coaching staff.

Bucs vs. Saints: Three keys to victory in Week 17

The Bucs put a beatdown on the Saints the last time the two teams played — here’s how they can do it again.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one win away from winning the NFC South and a playoff berth. Standing in their way is their second matchup with the New Orleans Saints, who have underwhelmed this year but are still formidable.

In their first game back in Week 4, Tampa Bay stomped the Saints 26-9, holding Derek Carr to an absurd 3.7 yards per attempt. While the Bucs likely will not be able to perfectly replicate that kind of defensive dominance, their goal will no doubt be to make life as difficult as possible for the New Orleans quarterback.

On offense, the Bucs have been surging behind quarterback Baker Mayfield and a steadily improving run game. Tampa Bay will want to control the tempo of the game and impose their will on one of their last roadblocks to the postseason.

Here are the Bucs’ three keys to victory over the Saints this week:

Who wins the Week 17 game between the Bucs and the Saints?

The Bucs can clinch a division win on New Year’s Eve — cast your vote in our poll to predict the winner of Week 17’s Bucs vs. Saints matchup!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need one more win. The New Orleans Saints need as many as they can get.

The Bucs are just one win away from clinching the NFC South and going to the playoffs, and they can do that at home by defeating the Saints on New Year’s Eve. Tampa Bay won the previous matchup in a 26-9 drubbing in New Orleans, and now, it’ll look to repeat the process and secure a playoff berth with a game to spare in the NFC South. The Bucs have been hot lately, winning four games in a row, and they will look to ring in the new year by extending that streak to five.

The Saints, meanwhile, have to win to survive. A win over the Bucs would increase their playoff chances and the ability to win the NFC South, but they still need lots and lots of help, as Tampa Bay can simply defeat the Panthers next week and clinch the division that way. Regardless, a victory over the Bucs is imperative, and they’ll seek it out after losing to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 16.

According to BetMGM, the Bucs are 2.5-point favorites over the Saints. The over/under is set at 42.5

Will Tampa Bay clinch the NFC South and a fourth-straight appearance in the playoffs? Or will New Orleans get the win and stay alive for just a bit longer?

Bucs dominate Jaguars 30-12 to move closer to NFC South title

The Bucs cooked the Jaguars in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as its score would indicate.

The Buccaneers picked a good time to start looking like a playoff team, crushing the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-12. Tampa Bay controlled the entire game, maintaining their lead from the opening drive and at no point appearing in danger of faltering. With this victory, the Bucs are one win away from securing the NFC South and a home playoff game.

While the Bucs were not as dominant offensively as they were last week against the Packers, the team put together a more complete game. The defense forced four turnovers and held the Jaguars to 12 points, slamming the door shut on all of the Jaguars’ drives until late into the third quarter.

The Bucs took an early 3-0 lead, moving down to the Jaguars 6-yard line before settling for the field goal. The defense pitched in on the following drive with a Devin White interception. Baker Mayfield then put the team on his back, avoiding two sacks to keep the drive alive and throwing a touchdown pass to Mike Evans.

Jacksonville’s offense continued to struggle, missing a field goal on the following drive that the Bucs turned into a field goal of their own. Lawrence’s nightmare half continued with another interception, this time to Antoine Winfield Jr. Tampa Bay exploited the miscue yet again, driving 65 yards for another Mike Evans touchdown.

The first half was an unmitigated disaster for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville’s offense. Lawrence turned the ball over twice and took two sacks while the team missed a field goal on their only real scoring attempt. While Tampa Bay’s third-down defense was as porous as it has been most of the season, strong efforts from Winfield, Lavonte David and Yaya Diaby buoyed the defense into shutting the Jaguars out in the first half.

The second half did not start any better for the Jaguars as a Diaby strip-sack gave the Bucs the ball in Jacksonville territory. The Bucs scored again on a 2-yard Rachaad White run:

The Jaguars offense entered desperation mode on the following drive, attempting and failing to convert on 4th-and-13. Jacksonville would not get on the board until late in the third quarter with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lawrence to Calvin Ridley.

After forcing the first Bucs punt of the day early in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars pulled Lawrence, replacing him with C.J. Beathard. The switch did little to change the results as Zyon McCollum forced an Evan Engram fumble that was recovered by Winfield.

After the Bucs failed to score off the turnover, the Jaguars drove down to the Bucs’ 10-yard line, but a Yaya Diaby sack led to another failed fourth-down conversion attempt. The Jaguars were able to put together one more touchdown drive, but by then the game was well out of hand. The Bucs ran out the clock on the following drive.

Mayfield was once again highly efficient, completing 26-of-35 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He also distributed the ball across the entire receiving corps, with four players recording at least four catches and 30 receiving yards. The run game was not as successful, gaining just 70 yards for 1.9 yards per attempt.

On defense, the Bucs subsisted on big plays, recording four sacks, five tackles for loss and four turnovers. A returning White made his presence known after a week where his game status was a matter of controversy, notching four tackles, half a sack, an interception, two pass breakups and two quarterback hits.

Beating the Jaguars puts the Bucs on the precipice of a third consecutive division title and fourth consecutive playoff berth. Tampa Bay has already beaten their next two opponents, the Saints and the Panthers, this year. With the Bucs playing their best football of the season, it appears likely they are headed for the postseason.

Who wins the Week 16 game between the Bucs and the Jaguars?

It’s a sunshine showdown in Tampa Bay — cast your vote in our poll to predict the winner of Week 16’s Bucs at Jaguars matchup!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t play the Jacksonville Jaguars too often in a battle of Florida teams, but when they do, it’s always a fun one.

The value the Bucs would get out of a win against Jacksonville is huge. Should Tampa Bay win this one and the New Orleans Saints lose to the Los Angeles Rams, the Bucs would need to beat either the Saints or Panthers in their last two games. That variability is a big boon to the team’s playoff chances, offering an even greater motivation to win.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, could be without their starting quarterback. QB Trevor Lawrence suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15 and did not practice on Monday, so his status is up in the air. Should he not be able to go, the Bucs would face QB C.J. Beathard.

According to BetMGM, the Bucs are one-point favorites against the Jaguars. The over-under is set at 42.5.

Will Tampa Bay get a huge win for their NFC South chances? Or will the Jaguars end their losing streak and win the sunshine showdown?
