Grading Alabama’s performance in loss to the Texas A&M Aggies

Grading Alabama’s performance after a tough loss to the Texas A&M Aggies.

Kyle Field became a sea of humans after the Texas A&M Aggies defeated the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on a last-second field goal.

Alabama came out flat-footed on defense and the Aggies took it to them for most of the first half. Nick Saban and Alabama were able to regroup at the half and came out and owned the majority of the second half. But it was all for not, as the Aggies made the plays when it mattered and came out victorious.

Each week we grade all three phases of the game for the Tide, this week should be interesting. Let’s get started.

OFFENSE: B-

The Alabama offense was really told the story of the game. Bryce Young and the offense were able to move the ball up and down the field for the better part of three quarters, but could not seem to finish off drives.

Alabama racked up 522 yards of total offense with 369 coming through the air and an additional 153 on the ground.

But it was Alabama’s unwillingness to run behind Brian Robinson Jr. inside of the ten-yard line that cost Alabama several points in the contest.

Outside of Young, Robinson, and Jameson Williams, it was a fairly inconsistent performance for the Alabama offense, including offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

DEFENSE: C-

The only thing the Alabama defense is consistent at is being inconsistent. Each week we see players out of position, missing tackles, or playing with bad technique.

It is simply not acceptable for the Alabama defense to perform at this level with the amount of talent on that side of the ball.

Sure, they played solid for most of the second half, but when they needed a stop to preserve a win, they folded.

It is time for Pete Golding to get this corrected. Alabama deserves a better defensive performance than what has been delivered.

SPECIAL TEAMS B-

Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Sports

Will Reichard continues to be a weapon for the Crimson Tide. Reichard connected on all three extra-point attempts and also connected on all three of his field-goal attempts.

Wide receiver Jacorey Brooks was able to block a punt in the second half and linebacker King Mwikuta was able to recover it in the endzone for a touchdown, but on the issuing kickoff, Texas A&M blew past the Alabama kick coverage for a touchdown.

Like the rest of the Tide, special teams consistency is needed.

What we learned from Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M

What we learned from Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M.

Alabama’s comeback attempt fell short Saturday night in College Station, as the Texas A&M Aggies made the plays late and hit a field goal as time expired to upset the Tide 41-38.

Alabama was able to outgain the Aggies by 143 yards, but that was not enough to escape Kyle Field with a victory.

There was a lot to be learned from the Tide’s performance, so let’s get right to it.

POSTGAME REPORT: Texas A&M’s last second FG sinks Alabama 41-38

Alabama’s comeback attempt falls short as Texas A&M hits a FG as time expired.

No. 1 Alabama’s comeback attempt fell short in College Station, as Texas A&M knocks in a walk-off field goal to beat Alabama 41-38.

Alabama trailed by fourteen at halftime and stormed back to take the lead late, but the defense could not get the stops late to hold off the Aggies.

Alabama outgained the Aggies 522 to 379, but that was not enough to give the Tide the victory. Costly turnovers and poor red zone play-calling cost the Tide several points.

Bryce Young finished the contest 28-48 for 369 yards three touchdowns and one interception. Brian Robinson Jr. led the way on the ground with 147 yards on 24 carries. Jameson Williams led the receiving group with 10 catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama must quickly regroup before heading to Starkville next week to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Alabama takes lead on Texas A&M gaffe, but Aggies score to knot game

Alabama and Texas A&M are going at it in a wild SEC clash

Alabama roared back against Texas A&M while trying to win its 20th straight game.

The Crimson Tide had a lot of help from the Aggies — and the officials — on the play that gave them the lead in the fourth quarter.

Bryce Young and the offense went quickly and caught Texas A&M napping.

Look at the top of the image/screen and you will Jameson Williams standing all by his lonesome.

Young took the snap and threw the easiest touchdown pass of his life to Williams. After the same pair hooked up on the 2-point conversion, Alabama led 38-31 in the SEC contest.

However, as CBS announcers pointed out and rules analyst Gene Steratore concurred, it looks like Alabama’s left tackle was not set when the ball was snapped and the Tide should have been penalized 5 yards.

They weren’t and Alabama had the lead … briefly.

Texas A&M drove down the field and scored. The PAT made it 38-38 with 3 minutes left in the wild clash.

No. 1 Alabama has crawled its way back to take the lead over Texas A&M late in the fourth.

Bryce Young noticed the A&M defense did not have anyone out covering Jameson Williams out wide and Bryce delivered a touchdown to Williams.

Williams has been clutch for the Tide in the second half and has totaled 146 yards receiving in the game on ten catches.

WATCH: Crimson Tide strikes first vs. Ole Miss with John Metchie TD

Alabama got the defensive stop inside their own 10 and made the most of the stop! Alabama leads 7-0.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide are the first to put points on the board in their SEC home-opener against a No. 12 Ole Miss team. The games was expected to be an offensive spectacle, with both quarterbacks being considered Heisman frontrunners.

The Rebels had first possession and started on their own 35-yard line, earned a few fourth-down conversions but failed on their final one of the opening drive inside the Crimson Tide 10-yard line.

Bryce Young then led Alabama to a 13 play, 94-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard pass from Young to John Metchie III in the end zone.

Alabama leads by seven with a few minutes remaining in the first quarter.
