Jets won’t use franchise tag on Bryce Huff, but ‘ideally Bryce is back’

The Jets won’t be tagging Bryce Huff, still hope to bring him back.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas confirmed the team will not use the franchise tag on Bryce Huff this offseason but that the ideal situation is the Jets are able to re-sign Huff.

“Obviously Bryce, unbelievable season,” Douglas said, via the Jets’ official website. “A great teammate, great player and a player that is very deserving to find out what his value is in the open market. The plan is not to tag Bryce at that 21-plus [million dollar] number, but the plan is to continue talking with the agents. Ideally, Bryce is back. Ten sacks is a very valuable thing to our defense and our team. We’re going to have those discussions moving forward and we have a little bit of time before that tampering window starts.”

The tampering window Douglas mentioned begins March 11 at noon eastern. Free agency and the new league year officially begins March 13 at 4:00pm eastern.

Pro Football Focus projects Huff to get a three-year, $50 million contract with $35 million guaranteed. The Jets used Huff as more of a pass-rush specialist while Huff wants to get more playing time and see more snaps against the run. With less than two weeks before other teams can talk to Huff, time is of the essence. The Jets want to keep Huff but $21 million for one year is proving a little too costly.

Giants named a potential landing spot for multiple edge rushers

The New York Giants, in need of an improved pass rush, have been named a potential landing spot for several free agent edge rushers.

With needs up and down their roster, the New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen will enter free agency prepared to address multiple positions.

One of those is along the edge where the Giants are desperately lacking outside of Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Although the pass rush need has flown a bit under the radar, the Giants were named as a potential landing spot for multiple edge rushers courtesy of Pro Football Focus.

Although it may not be the Giants’ biggest or most glaring need this offseason, it may be one of the most important positions for them to address. With blitz-heavy defensive coordinator Wink Martindale no longer with the team, it will be even more important for the Giants’ defense to generate pressure more organically.

Here is a look at the edge rushers PFF has identified the Giants as a potential landing spot.

NFL sets salary cap at $255.4 million, giving Jets more cap space

The Jets have more money to work with as the salary cap for 2024 makes a big jump.

The NFL officially set the salary cap for the 2024 season at $255.4 million, an incredible $30 million increase from 2023, thanks to media revenue and the teams fully repaying advances from the COVID pandemic.

As a result, the Jets now have more room to work with. Based on numbers from Over the Cap, the Jets now have about $15 million in cap space with the additional space. OTC initially projected about $256 million for the salary cap but recent news caused projections to be lower, at around $242 million.

The Jets will also still have plenty of moves to make to create much more room for themselves. Perhaps this will give them a better chance to keep Bryce Huff. Speaking of which, with the salary cap set, the franchise tag numbers are also set. Placing the franchise tag on Huff would be worth about $21.3 million.

ESPN names New York best fit for Bryce Huff…but not the Jets

ESPN names New York best fit for Bryce Huff…but not the Jets

Free agency is right around the corner and the biggest question surrounding the Jets entering March is whether they’ll be able to keep edge-rusher Bryce Huff. After leading the team with ten sacks in 2023, Huff has set himself up for a big payday this offseason, potentially up to $20 million per year.

That said, ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently took his top 50 free agents, of which Huff was a part of, and gave his best fit for each free agent. Huff’s best fit from Bowen was in New York…but not the Jets. His best fit wound up being the New York Giants.

With a new defensive coordinator in Shane Bowen, the Giants would benefit from adding Huff — a flamethrower off the edge — to play opposite Kayvon Thibodeaux. Last season with the Jets, Huff produced 10 sacks and logged a pass rush win rate of 21.8% (eighth in the league). The Giants, meanwhile, were tied for 28th in sacks with 34.

Going into the Combine, the Giants have about $20 million in cap space, while the Jets have under $2 million according to Over the Cap. Those numbers will obviously change as the Jets will do what they can to perhaps make one final push before free agency begins to sign Huff.

Giants named a ‘perfect team fit’ for edge rusher Bryce Huff

ESPN named the New York Giants as a “perfect team fit” for impending free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff (New York Jets).

The New York Giants will have roughly $21.8 million in salary cap space when free agency opens, but they could create as much as $80 million with several cuts and restructures.

The number could also rise depending on where the NFL sets the cap ceiling, which is an announcement that will be made in the very near future.

So, what will the Giants do with that money as they prepare their roster ahead of the 2024 NFL draft? Some expect general manager Joe Schoen to target an edge rusher, including ESPN’s Matt Bowen, who recently named Bryce Huff a perfect fit.

Huff has been with the New York Jets since being inked as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. He came into his own this past season with 10.0 sacks after having a second-round tender placed on him by the Jets in March.

The Giants were hoping that Azeez Ojulari would be that bookend for Kayvon Thibodeaux, but he has not been able to stay healthy. It could be time to move on and Huff could be had at a reasonable price.

Meanwhile, Giants running back Saquon Barkley was named a perfect fit for the Houston Texans and safety Xavier McKinney for the Green Bay Packers.

Over the Cap predicts Bryce Huff will sign ’11th hour’ deal to stay with Jets

Over the Cap predicts Bryce Huff will sign ’11th hour’ deal to stay with Jets

Bryce Huff has played his way into a nice payday this upcoming free agency period and questions have been swirling regarding whether the Jets will be able to afford and keep the edge rusher for 2024. The Jets don’t have much cap space at the outset, but they do have plenty of ability to make cap room. That should help put the Jets in better position to re-sign Huff, perhaps even before Huff hits the open market.

Over the Cap expert Jason Fitzgerald believes that is a possibility for Huff and the Jets, predicting Huff will sign an “11th-hour deal to remain in New York”, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Fitzgerald believes Huff could ask for as much as $20 million per year but may ultimately settle for $17 million to $18 million per year. Fitzgerald does not think the franchise tag will be in play here, as that would cost the Jets $23 million for this season.

“I think the public pressure is going to be so high, and it’s going to be really bad if they lose him, so maybe they end up overpaying a little bit to keep him,” Fitzgerald said, via ESPN.

Huff led the Jets with ten sacks in 2023, 2.5 more than the next-closest, Jermaine Johnson’s 7.5 sacks.

Cimini adds in the article that the Jets’ price point could also depend on their faith on 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald.

Ultimately, the Jets’ price point could be determined by their faith in McDonald, who played only 19% of the snaps and recorded three sacks as a rookie. If they believe he can move into a bigger role and replace Huff’s 10 sacks, it probably means they won’t break the bank for Huff. McDonald was drafted 15th overall for a reason, and team officials insist they remain high on his future. Coach Robert Saleh went so far as to say he has “superstar” potential.

The Jets still have about three weeks to work something out and be able to keep Huff before free agency begins.

Ranking 2024’s top 12 free-agent pass rushers

There’s a pretty familiar name in this group.

Whether the Carolina Panthers tag or extend Brian Burns, we’re not going to see the two-time Pro Bowler even swim in the waters of free agency. But until then, he’s one of the 12 best edge defenders whose contracts are officially up.

Here’s Burns and his 11 pass-rushing pals:

Updated look at Jets’ pending free agents for 2024

Free agency is right around the corner for the New York Jets. They’ll have some very important decisions to make regarding some in-house free agents, with edge-rusher Bryce Huff right at the top of the list. Will the Jets be able to free up space and keep Huff? How about Ashtyn Davis? Will they keep a core special-teamer in New York?

With free agency about a month away, here’s another look at the upcoming free agents for the Jets here in 2024.

10 DEs the Colts should target in free agency

Taking a look at some free-agent DE options for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts have some promise in their young defensive ends but adding an impact player at the position or competition that can provide depth should always be considered.

All three of the starting edge rushers will return in 2024 with Kwity Paye, Samson Ebukam and Dayo Odeyingbo all under contract for the upcoming season. Adding to the position via free agency still would be a wise idea.

We should note that we understand a handful of these players won’t even hit the market, but we’re working under the hypothetical scenario that they hit they become available, regardless of how slim the chances are.

If Chris Ballard decides to add to the position group via free agency, here are 10 players that the front office should target.

Estimated value of Jets pending free agents

A look at the estimated values of pending Jets free agents from Over the Cap.

The Jets will soon be entering a very key free-agency period with plenty of their in-house free agents they’ll need to take care of, with edge-rusher Bryce Huff at the top of the list.

The Jets will have to make some moves to add cap space to keep some of these free agents, including restructuring contracts, which they will undoubtedly do in a season in which they are pushing all their chips to the middle of the table.

Here, we’ll take a look at the estimated values of some of the pending free agents for the Jets, including edge Bryce Huff. These aren’t necessarily contract values, just how Over the Cap values the players using their metrics mixed with Pro Football Focus.
