Report: Texas A&M football program hires Aggies alumnus Jordan Peterson from Kansas as DBs coach

According to a report from Billy Liucci of TexAgs, the Aggies have hired Kansas co-defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson as co-cornerbacks coach.

The old cliche goes “Everything happens for a reason,” and that is certainly evident in Aggieland over the past nine days.

The day after Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko retained Bryant Gross-Armiento as a senior defensive analyst, Wesley McGriff decided to return to Auburn rather than becoming passing game coordinator & co-defensive backs coach alongside Ishmael Aristide.

Now only eight days later, Elko has found McGriff’s replacement and it’s a face that diehard members of the 12th Man will know. According to a report from Billy Liucci of TexAgs, the Aggies have hired Kansas co-defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson as co-cornerbacks coach.

Peterson is a Texas A&M alumnus who played four seasons at Kyle Field before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2009 along with his master’s in education curriculum and instruction in 2010. As a 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety, he racked up 81 tackles 15 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery.

After becoming a two-time All-Big 12 Academic First Team selection, Peterson got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant in College Station from 2010-11. He coached at Fresno State from 2012-16, New Mexico from 2017-19 and had been with the Jayhawks for the last four seasons from 2020-23.

Report: Wesley McGriff reverses course and returns to Auburn after accepting Texas A&M job

After agreeing to leave Auburn for Texas A&M on New Year’s Eve, Wesley McGriff has apparently changed his mind according to Justin Hokanson.

After agreeing to leave Auburn for Texas A&M on New Year’s Eve, Wesley McGriff has apparently changed his mind.

According to Justin Hokanson, the Auburn reporter for On3 Sports, McGriff has reversed course and will be returning to the Tigers to coach defensive backs. He had agreed to work for head coach Mike Elko and serve as co-defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator on the final day of 2023.

McGriff was supposed to work alongside Ishmael Aristide, who was hired in early December to coach cornerbacks and followed Elko from Durham after coaching on his Duke staff for one season. The move comes one day after Elko retained Bryant Gross-Armiento to serve as a senior defensive analyst after coaching defensive backs on Jimbo Fisher‘s staff.

As pointed out on New Year’s Eve by Billy Liucci of TexAgs, McGriff has more than just SEC coaching experience, he is also a talented recruiter who has developed elite prospects into dependable NFL players.

McGriff returns to Auburn to continue his third separate stint with the Tigers, including 2016, 2019 to 2020 and 2023 to the present day. He served as the secondary coach at Lousiville in 2022. McGriff also has previous experience at Florida and Ole Miss.

Bryant Gross-Armiento retained by Texas A&M to serve as senior defensive analyst

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is a very smart man and knows when you have a good person already in your building, you do everything you can to keep them, which is exactly what he did this week.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is a very smart man and knows when you have a good person already in your building, you do everything you can to keep them, which is exactly what he did this week.

According to Carter Karels, the Texas A&M beat writer for 247Sports, the Aggies will retain Bryant Gross-Armiento in an off-field role. Gross-Armiento previously served as defensive backs coach under Jimbo Fisher. As noted in the report, the Aggies Athletics website recently updated Gross-Armiento’s title from secondary coach to “senior defensive analyst.”

After serving as cornerbacks coach for Elko at Duke, Ishamael Aristide was hired to the same role in Bryan-College Station on Dec. 5. In the final hours of 2023, Wesley McGriff was hired from Auburn to serve as co-defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. Per Karels, Gross-Armiento is expected to work directly under Aristide and McGriff.

Gross-Armiento has been in Aggieland since 2021 and boasts an impressive factoid. Back in July, he was named the fifth-best recruiter in the country and fourth-best in the SEC.

2024 5-Star Athlete Terry Bussey has committed to Texas A&M

Boom! Texas A&M has landed its biggest commitment of the 2024 cycle, as five-star Athlete Terry Bussey excitedly committed to the Aggies on Thursday afternoon!

Boom! Texas A&M has officially landed its most significant prospect in the 2024 cycle, as five-star wide receiver Terry Bussey excitingly committed to the Aggies on Thursday night, finally putting his long-winding recruiting journey to bed, or at least until he officially signs the dotted line in February.

Earlier this month, Bussey updated his official decision date after taking several visits to Alabama (Sept. 8), College Station (Sept. 16), and an official visit to LSU on Sept. 22, leading to his final five program list including Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, and the current favorite to land the future superstar, Texas A&M.

Just like 2024 Aggie commit, five-star WR Cameron Coleman, it was the relationships developed with Texas A&M’s staff that sealed the deal, starting with head coach Jimbo Fisher and ending with TJ Rushing and Bryant Gross-Armiento, who was recently named one of the top recruiters in the country.

Bussey’s position versatility and impressive track speed have led to nearly every program having to narrow down his sole future postion after spending time at quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back, as Fisher currently sees him as a cornerback in D.J. Durkin’s 4-2-5 scheme. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if his future is in the slot due to his extensive time at wide receiver.

Amid his senior season at Timpson (TX), Bussey is currently positioned as the 19th-ranked player in the 2024 cycle, the 2nd-ranked athlete, and the 5th-ranked player in Texas, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

As by far the most productive player in the 2024 class, Bussey’s 2022 junior season at Timpson (TX) was downright legendary, playing at quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back while accounting for 2,177 yards and 26 touchdowns with a 64% completion percentage as the starting quarterback while rushing for 2,596 yards and 46 touchdowns with a 14-yard per rush average. Bussey recorded over 115 tackles and five interceptions as a two-way player, with four returned for touchdowns as a defensive back.

Congratulations, Terry! Gig ’em!

Texas A&M Secondary coach Bryant Gross-Armiento ranked as a Top 5 recruiter in the country

According to 247Sports, Texas A&M secondary coach Bryant Gross-Armiento has been named as a Top 5 recruiter in the country.

In the world of college football recruiting, “credit where credit is due” is not only an underused form of acknowledgment but an indication that relatively unknown members of every coaching staff are finally receiving the praise they deserve when it comes to adding talent to every recruiting cycle.

Texas A&M’s 9th-ranked 2024 recruiting class, who in less than a month have added 11 prospects, including five-star wide receiver Cameron Coleman on July 4, isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Leading the way, Head Coach Jimbo Fisher’s steadfast leadership deserves recognition.

However, with many other cooks in the kitchen, newly minted secondary coach Bryant Gross-Armiento, who has been with the program since 2021, is solely responsible for securing commitments from four high-priority prospects, including four-star wide receiver Drelon Miller, four-star safety Jordan Pride, and Myles Davis, and four-star offensive tackle, Weston Davis. due to his tremendous success this summer, Gross-Armiento has been named the fifth-best recruiter in the country and the fourth-best in the SEC, according to 247Sports.

Bryant Gross-Armiento’s recruiting acumen is no surprise. His keen ability to build relationships with both offensive and defensive prospects while selling what Texas A&M offers as a football program is clearly something Jimbo Fisher saw early on the outside of his obvious coaching ability. four-star safety Myles Davis committed to the program on Wednesday night, Davis’s quote during his conversation with On3’s Hayes Fawcett regarding his constant contact with Gross-Armiento throughout the recruiting process.

“Coach BGA and Matty Ice, their recruiting guy, I talk to them every day. Coach Rushing and Durk about 3x a week so they’re all checking up on me and they see me coming in and being an instant leader. With the depth there losing in the secondary,I can come in and make an impact given I do the things like compete and get the starting job and just keep working. The potential they see for me is like no other school. Coach Jimbo was telling me how he sees some Derwin James in me and that I can be like him in my own way for his team. That’s my favorite safety so It definitely hit hard and coach BGA has a legit list of DBs he’s helped put in the league.”

After spending two seasons as a defensive analyst, Fisher promoted Gross-Armiento to second coach in February after spending three seasons at Wake Forest (2017-2019) and Georgia (2020).

2024 4-star Safety Myles Davis reflects on why he committed to Texas A&M

2024 4-star S Myles Davis’s surprising commitment to Texas A&M wasn’t a surprise to the man himself, who recently reflected on his decision

Texas A&M’s 2024 recruiting class is now 17 players deep after Wednesday’s announcement that four-star safety Myles Davis surprisingly committed to the Aggies after nearly every recruiting database, including 247Sports and On3, overwhelmingly predicted Davis to land with the Texas Longhorns.

According to On3, Davis is currently positioned as the 28th safety and the 50th-ranked player in Texas and is entering his senior season at Judson High School in Converse, Texas.

During his 2022 junior season, Davis recorded 38 tackles, four interceptions, and six pass breakups, as his athletic profile at 6-1 and 180 pounds combined with length, speed, vision, coverage range, and ball skills led to Jimbo Fisher and his staff doing everything in their power to get Davis to College Station, leading to his all-important and impactful official visit on June 23.

After his commitment, Davis spoke to On3 recruiting analyst Hayes Fawcett on what stood out the most, with Texas A&M’s explicitly pointing to his future development at the safety postion.

“They brought everything to recruit me and win me over Texas and really set themselves apart coming in and having a shot to compete for the starting job,” Davis stated. “College Station set right with my heart and honestly every coach I talked to didn’t like Jimbo and for some reason I love being on a team that’s hated.”

One of the more underrated storylines regarding Davis’ connection to the Aggies stems from his relationship with Texas A&M secondary coach Bryant Gross-Armiento, who was promoted to his new position back in February and has since become one of the top recruiters in the country.

“I can come in and make an impact given I do the things like compete and get the starting job and just keep working,” Davis told Fawcett. “The potential they see for me is like no other school. Coach Jimbo was telling me how he sees some Derwin James in me and that I can be like him in my own way for his team.”

Yes, Jimbo Fisher’s time at Florida State included coaching both cornerback Jalen Ramsey and safety Derwin James, two of the best players at their respective position in the NFL, so for Davis, this was more than a compelling selling point.
