USA TODAY Sports Super 25 Regional Football Watchlist: Southwest region

Keep an eye on these teams as the opening Super 25 ranking nears.

The 2023 high school football season has arrived, with teams kicking off across the country in August.

That means the first USA TODAY Sports Super 25 is nearing, which marks another start to an iconic franchise that began back in 1982.

Last year’s Super 25 was one of the tightest races of all time, as St. John Bosco narrowly won out over Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman, among others.

How will things stack up this season? Ahead of the opening Super 25, USA TODAY HSS is looking around the country at the five regions we use to create the national rankings:

Next up is Southwest, which comprises of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

FIU vs Bryant Game Preview

Why Bryant Will Win

FIU is totally starting over, but … it’s close.

New head coach Mike MacIntyre has to build up a team that was among the worst in college football in all phases, with the biggest problem for a game like this the turnover margin.

The Panthers had a massive problem giving the ball away – and didn’t do enough on D to make up for it – and the Bulldogs have to keep that all going.

Bryant was among the best FCS teams last season in turnover margin, the run defense was strong, and there was a good balance to the attack around QB Zevi Eckhaus and RB Fabrice Mukendi. The FIU lines are going to need a bit to come together.

Why FIU Will Win

The coaching will be stronger out of the gate, the transfers are coming in to beef up the options and the depth, and the offense should be far better right away.

Getting Duke transfer Gunnar Holmberg at quarterback is a good start, and the receiving corps should be a strength thanks to the new parts. Lexington Joseph is a good back to work around if the O line can do be just okay.

Bryant will do a lot of things right this season, but it’s not going to crank up the downfield passing attack – it’ll be more careful than explosive. If the FIU defense can force a slew of third-and-longs, it should get the job done.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will match its 2021 win total after Week 1.

Bryant will be steady, and again, the turnovers will play a big role – FIU can NOT be -2 or worse in this – but the offense will take over early, the defense will settle in after halftime, and a relatively tight game will bust open early in the fourth quarter.

Wagner vs Bryant Game Preview, Northeast Conference Tournament Final

Why Wagner Will Win

You’re not going to get a whole lot from three out of the Seahawks, and this isn’t a great team on the boards – but it’s good enough on the defensive end. However, this team makes lots and lots of baskets and it’s great at defending the perimeter.

It’s not the high-scoring team around, but it’s ultra-efficient in the way it works around for the right shots. Averaging over 80 points per game over the last six outings, it’s great on the inside and terrific at coming up with steals for points.

All but forget about getting clean looks from three against this bunch – no only has hit 40% form three against it since mid-January.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Bryant Will Win

Wagner is 2-2 in the last four games with one of those defeats coming against your Bryant Bulldogs.

Bryant can play a little D, too.

The Bulldogs are the opposite of Wagner in offensive philosophy when it comes to how they shoot. They’ll take a whole lot of threes, they’ll take advantage of the misses to generate second chance points off the rebounds, and they’ll get to the line over and over and over again.

Now, they won’t make all those threes – they’re only hitting 31% from the outside – but again, that’s where the offensive rebounding comes in.

They’re 16-1 in their last 17 games, but the run started with …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

Wagner vs Bryant: What’s Going To Happen

Bryant lost to Wagner in overtime early in January even though the Seahawks couldn’t buy a three. They couldn’t do anything from the outside in the rematch loss, and they’re not going to hit their threes in this, either.

The Wagner D will keep Bryant from going off, but the inability from three along with giving up a whole lot of free throws will send the Bulldogs to the tournament.

2020 NFL Draft: Which tight end will be drafted first?

A look at the tight ends who could be drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft and who is most likely to be picked first.

One of the weakest positions in the 2020 NFL Draft is tight end. Barring a surprise, there won’t be a tight end drafted in the first round. In fact, there is a realistic chance that there isn’t a tight end drafted inside of the top-50 selections.

However, that won’t prevent us from wagering on who will be the first tight end draft come April 23-25. Take a look at the odds for the first tight end to be drafted:

2020 NFL Draft odds, first TE selected:

Odds
Cole Kmet Notre Dame -110
Adam Trautman Dayton +400
Thaddeus Moss LSU +600
Albert Okwuegbunam Missouri +600
Brycen Hopkins Purdue +800
Hunter Bryant Washington +800
Harrison Bryant Florida Atlantic +1200
Jared Pinkney Vanderbilt +1200

Who will be the first TE drafted? Best bets

Notre Dame’s Cole Kmet is the odds-on favorite to be the first tight end off the board as he possesses ideal size and speed for the position. While he needs to improve as a blocker, he is just 20 years old and is still improving. Given the big-school pedigree and elite size, Kmet should come off the board sometime in the second round. Even despite the lower odds, Kmet is still a GOOD BET to be the first tight end selected.

Looking to place a bet on the 2020 NFL Draft? Place your legal sports wagers online at BetMGM. Bet now!

After Kmet comes Dayton’s Adam Trautman. Despite playing at a small school, Trautman made a name for himself at the 2020 Senior Bowl. But after he ran a 4.80 40-yard dash at the combine, it’s tough to see Trautman being drafted inside the top 60 picks. Despite the attractive odds, PASS on betting on Trautman to be the first tight end selected.

The sucker bet here is LSU’s Thaddeus Moss, whose odds have been pushed up due to name recognition. After measuring in at 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds, Moss doesn’t have ideal size for the position — to go with his below-average speed. That doesn’t even take into account that he broke his foot before the combine, meaning that he won’t be able to work out for teams at all before late April. PASS on Moss to be the first tight end drafted at +600 and look for him to be a late Day 3 selection.

An intriguing longshot name to monitor is Missouri’s Albert Okwuegbunam. At the combine, Okwuegbunam stole the show with a 4.49 40 dash while weighing 258 pounds. He is one of the most athletic tight ends in the class, and with three years of college production on his resume, it wouldn’t be a shock to see someone gamble on his upside late in the second round. CONSIDER BETTING on Okwuegbunam at +600 to be the first tight end drafted.

76ers Joel Embiid dons No. 24 jersey to honor Kobe Bryant vs. Warriors

Against the Golden State Warriors, Joel Embiid switched his jersey number to No. 24 to honor fallen NBA legend, Kobe Bryant.

Since the devastating death of Kobe Bryant in a fatal helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of his daughter Gianna and seven others, players across the league have been paying tribute to the “Mamba.”

There has been an outpour on social media, with many players sending emotional messages regarding the fallen NBA legend. Draymond Green, Stephen Curry and D’Angelo Russell have all used their social media platforms to honor Bryant.

On the court, teams have been taking eight and 24-second violations as an ode to Bryant’s two jersey numbers he wore in his career. On Tuesday, in their first game action since Bryant’s passing, the Golden State Warriors traveled to his hometown of Philadelphia for a contest with the 76ers.

The 76ers and Warriors followed suit with the rest of the league, taking an eight and 24-second violation to start the game. However, it wasn’t the only attempt at honoring Bryant.

Joel Embiid suited up in Bryant’s No. 24 jersey against the Warriors. The No. 24 is retired from 76ers Hall of Famer, Bobby Jones, yet Embiid received permission to wear the jersey against Golden State.

Golden State won’t have the chance to honor Bryant in San Francisco until February 8, as they are currently riding a five-game road trip. When Golden State does return to the Bay Area, they will host Bryant’s former team, the Los Angeles Lakers at Chase Center.

Notre Dame’s Braden Lenzy Remembers Kobe Bryant

The news of Kobe Bryant’s death is shocking.  It’s awful, no words do the moment or the news justice.

If you haven’t already heard, this is one of those moments that just shock you.  Some people you grow up watching play a sport, invent the next great thing or do something heroic.  These people seem like real-life action heroes in that they’re just not susceptible to something awful happening.

Kobe Bryant was one of those people or players, who was nothing short of an NBA legend.

Unfortunately that was not the case today as the shocking news of Bryant’s untimely death has shaken not only the sports world but really the entire world.

I was never a Lakers fan by any means and I didn’t necessarily root for Kobe but I sure as heck enjoyed watching him.  I rooted against his Lakers squads for years (2000 NBA Finals still sting) but he was also the first athlete I remember specifically forking over a pretty penny of my hard-earned money to watch in person once I’d gotten a full-time job.

The news of Kobe Bryant’s death is shocking.  It’s awful, no words do the moment or the news justice.  If you’re the praying type I’m sure those close to him and the other victims could use some about now.

In the meantime, Notre Dame speedster Braden Lenzy took to Twitter shortly after the news broke to share memories of Kobe Bryant. I thought I’d share it because it’s a lot deeper and more personal than just “I loved watching him ball” or anything like that.

Again, I’m at a loss for words so won’t even try to do it justice.

Unreal and awfull
