Browns LB Mack Wilson sent well wishes to Patrick Mahomes, who cleared concussion protocol

This is pretty cool.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes status for this weekend’s AFC Championship game was up in the air for most of the week.

Last weekend during the Cheifs’ Divisional Round game against the Cleveland Browns, Mahomes was hit by linebacker Mack Wilson and suffered a concussion.

It was a clean hit, but Mahomes ended up hitting his head on the turf badly enough to keep him out of the game. Luckily for them, though, Mahomes was cleared by team doctors on Friday to play in this weekend’s game against the Bills.

And with that news, Wilson sent his own well-wishes to Mahomes as he prepares to play on Sunday.

This is pretty nice to see. Especially after Wilson was called out by Mahomes mother last week after the hit. Of course, he explained that there was no disrespect and he was just playing hard.

They peaced everything up.

Shouts to Wilson for being a great sport. It’s good to see Mahomes back and healthy again. Football is better when he’s at his best.

Browns OL Wyatt Teller still rooting for Buffalo: ‘I love Bills Mafia’

Buffalo Bills Mafia gets support from Cleveland Browns OL Wyatt Teller.

There was a distinct chance that Wyatt Teller wouldn’t be rooting for the Bills this weekend. That scenario would have come if his team won on Sunday and he was facing his former teammates.

That’s understandable.

However, Buffalo trading him to Cleveland creates no hard feelings in him, he said on Tuesday.

Reflecting on the season that was for him after the Browns lost to Buffalo’s upcoming opponent in the Divisional round, the Kansas City Chiefs, Teller took a second to look ahead to next weekend. Teller said his heart is pulling for the Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

“I hope the best for them and all the success to them,” Teller said per Browns Wire. “Josh (Allen), I’ve texted him multiple times, Harrison Phillips, Ike Boettger, a bunch of the guys on the offensive line. Dion Dawkins, I made sure to say hey to him. FaceTimed him a couple times.”

Teller also expressed being thankful the Bills were the team to draft him back in 2018.

“They gave me my shot. They drafted me there,” Teller said. “I understand it’s business. I kind of grew a part of that family there. I love Bills Mafia. I’m pulling for ’em. I wish the best for ’em.”

Just ahead of the 2019 season, the Bills dealt Teller to the Browns. Buffalo made an effort to bolster their offensive line prior to last season and hoped competition would do it. The Bills signed guys like Jon Feliciano and Quinton Spain… in the process, there were others left on the outside looking in and among those were Teller.

Buffalo shipped him and a 2021 seventh-round pick to to the Browns for fifth and sixth-round pick, both of which were in 2020.

The fallout from this trade is both good and bad for the Bills in the end.

For Teller, it’s all good on his end. He’s an anchor for the Browns now and Pro Football Focus grades him as the best guard in the entire NFL from this past season. On the flip side, Bills gave up Teller, who was a fifth-round pick himself, for two late-round picks. Not good business for a guy that ended up being a very highly-praised prospect.

But the Bills did make those two picks count. That fifth rounder? It was part of the package that helped the Bills land wide receiver Stefon Diggs. That sixth-round pick? That became kicker Tyler Bass and after settling in, he looks to be Buffalo’s answer at kicker for the very long time.

While Teller could be a guy that would make the Buffalo offense line a better unit right now … the Bills certainly did make those two picks count.

Chiefs snap counts, divisional round: Darrel Williams takes over the backfield

What can we learn from the Kansas City Chiefs’ divisional round snap counts?

The Kansas City Chiefs overcame adversity to defeat the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The snap counts showed us a few things about this team heading into the AFC Championship Game, namely that this team is deeper than it appears at a number of positions.

Here’s a look at how the snaps came down this week:

*Snap counts via NFL Game Statistics and Information System

Observations

  • Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes played in 48 of 68 possible offensive snaps before exiting the game with a concussion. Mahomes was replaced by backup QB Chad Henne, who only needed 20 offensive snaps to seal the victory for Kansas City.
  • Darrel Williams didn’t just get the start on Sunday, he took over the backfield, leading the rest of the running back group by over 40 snaps. Le’Veon Bell only saw 11 snaps while Darwin Thompson only played on special teams. It’ll be interesting to see how the snaps work when Clyde Edwards-Helaire is healthy and returns to the mix.
  • Demarcus Robinson (48) and Mecole Hardman (47) saw practically an even split in snaps with Sammy Watkins sidelined with a calf injury. Even Byron Pringle (32) played a good amount. They used a village to replace Watkins’ presence and it seemed to work out just fine, but it was a departure from the norm.
  • Ricky Seals-Jones only saw four snaps on the day. Nick Keizer seemed to be the one picking up most of the slack with Deon Yelder placed on the injured reserve list with a groin injury.
  • Bashaud Breeland played 55 snaps before exiting the game with a concussion.
  • L’Jarius Sneed continues to be a big part of what the Chiefs do defensively. He played 50 snaps, including some snaps on the perimeter once Breeland left with an injury.
  • Alex Okafor (32) continues to see more snaps than starter Tanoh Kpassagnon (30). It feels like we could see him draw a start before the postseason is over.
  • Mike Pennel didn’t see much of an increase in his snaps against a run-heavy team with just 14 snaps on the day. The Chiefs seemed to opt for more Derrick Nnadi and Tershawn Wharton instead.
  • Anthony Sherman and Nick Keizer led the team in special teams snaps with 16. A total of 11 players only played special teams snaps.

Chiefs vs. Browns game recap: Everything we know

A look at what we know after the Chiefs vs. Browns divisional-round game.

A whirlwind affair of high drama and even higher stakes, the Chiefs escaped with their first win of the postseason against the Browns. A third-quarter injury to Patrick Mahomes took the life out of Kansas City in crunch time, but keen play by backup Chad Henne helped the team keep their lead and win the game.

Speculation about the AFC title game will hinge on Mahomes’ availability for the matchup. After the Bills’ convincing win against Baltimore yesterday, the game should be a toss-up.

Lightning-fast analysis of the Kansas City Chiefs’ divisional-round game against the Cleveland Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs fans, you can breathe a sigh of relief. A lot of things went wrong in this game, but the end result is a 22-17 win and a third consecutive AFC Championship Game. We don’t know what the status of QB Patrick Mahomes will be moving forward as he suffered a concussion during this game. What we do know is that the Chiefs overcame adversity to pull out a gutsy win.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes knocked out of game vs. Browns

Mahomes is officially in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Update: Patrick Mahomes has officially been ruled out with a concussion.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has left the game with an apparent head injury.

On a third-and-short play, the Chiefs ran yet another speed option play like the one that Mahomes scored on earlier in the game. Mahomes took a big hit from Browns LB Mack Wilson on the play and was driven into the ground. He was shaken up following the play and stumbled while trying to stand, very clearly dealing with some sort of a head injury.

Mahomes was taken into the blue tent on the sideline before exiting to head to the locker room. The broadcast confirmed that Mahomes is in the NFL’s concussion protocol. He’ll need to be cleared by an independent neurologist as part of the NFL’s policy related to concussions before he’ll be allowed to return to the game.

Chiefs backup QB Chad Henne entered the game in Mahomes’ place. He came in on fourth-and-inches and the team managed to convert. They marched down the field and got into field goal range, extending their lead to 12 points.

Obviously, this is not the situation you want to be in if you’re the Chiefs. They’ll need to rely on their playmakers on both sides of the ball to close this game out if Mahomes is unable to return to the game.

Key takeaways from first half of Chiefs vs. Browns

The first half is in the books, so what did we learn about the Kansas City Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns are in a battle for the right to play in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs seem to have an answer for everything in this game, while the Browns are struggling to slow them down. It has resulted in a 19-3 score in favor of Kansas City at the half, though, Cleveland will get the ball first when they return to the field.

Here’s a look at some of the things we’ve taken away from the first half of play:

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes battling through apparent foot injury

Mahomes seems to be dealing with an issue with his left big toe.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes seems to be battling through a bit of an injury issue with his left foot.

Mahomes left the field grimacing following the Chiefs’ second touchdown and hustled over to the trainer’s table. They took the shoe off of his left foot and looked at his big toe. They didn’t spend much time looking at it and he was back up and walking around on the sidelines shortly after.

He went back into the game and the first few plays seemingly had no problems. As the drive went on, it was easy to tell that Mahomes wasn’t 100% and was laboring through some sort of issue.

Prior to the injury, Mahomes had only thrown a single incomplete pass, but he’s since thrown a few balls low and in the dirt, possibly due to his foot injury. He’s hobbled a bit after a few throws and seems to be having some issues when he goes to plant and make those throws.

We’ll see if this develops into anything more serious or affects the gameplan at all. He continues to walk around on the sideline and try to get loose while the defense is on the field.

WATCH: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes scores opening TD on speed option

Mahomes gets the first touchdown of the game against the Browns.

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the board first after a tendency-breaking first drive from Andy Reid’s offense.

When you think about the Chiefs, you’re typically thinking about a high-powered passing attack centered around Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. This time around their opening drive had more running plays than it did passing plays. They got things started with a 4-yard reverse to Tyreek Hill and some between-the-tackles running from Darrel Williams. Then they capped the drive off with a one-yard speed option touchdown run by Mahomes to the short side of the field.

Check out the opening score from the man himself:

This is the first time the Chiefs have scored a touchdown on the opening drive since their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in Week 12. It’s the first rushing touchdown for Mahomes since Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Chiefs fans probably don’t want to see Mahomes doing too much running today, but the Browns didn’t seem to have an answer for it. They didn’t seem to have an answer for much of what Kansas City did on that opening drive. If they can come back out and continue to march down the field like that, it’ll make it tough on Cleveland.
