Questionable Malik McDowell penalty from Week 6 leads to a fine as well

A questionable penalty now has also been fined. See multiple angles of McDowell’s play on Kyler Murray here and judge for yourself:

The Cleveland Browns have already played their Week 7 game with a 17 – 14 victory on Thursday Night Football over the Denver Broncos. The NFL is just finishing up with some business from the Browns Week 6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Cleveland fans remember vividly how poorly the early part of the game against the Cardinals was officiated. While some of that got overshadowed by the Browns poor performance for the rest of the game, it didn’t help the team start well either.

A couple of the penalties that were called involved Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray. A roughing the passer call happened despite Murray barely moving after being touched and never falling to the ground.

Another penalty involving Murray has come back to light as Malik McDowell was just fined $3,667 for a play that many do not believe should have been a penalty anyway:

The play in question had Murray scrambling around, trying to make a play when McDowell closed in on him on the sideline. As Murray started to throw the ball away, the Browns defensive lineman attempted to make a play on the quarterback. McDowell ended up pushing Murray’s own arm into his own head, knocking him to the ground.

A play that didn’t seem worthy of a penalty now earns a fine.

Here are two replays from different angles of the play in question:

Obviously, the NFL not only believes that McDowell’s play deserved a penalty but that it was also fineable. It will be interesting if McDowell, his teammates, coaches or the organization make any statements publicly following the fine.

Browns lay an egg in Week 6 leading to questioning much about the team

Almost everything about the Browns is in question after a terrible loss in Week 6. We start with a few big ones here with many more to come during this short week:

The Cleveland Browns were steamrolled by the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. While injuries continue to pile up and help explain some of the struggles, they are not enough to answer all the questions that are coming the Browns way over the next few days.

Whether a blessing or a curse, Cleveland doesn’t have long to lick their wounds as they host the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football this week.

The Cardinals controlled the game in all aspects, despite missing their head coach/offensive play-caller, two other coaches and two starters. Kyler Murray threw for four touchdowns and zero interceptions, James Conner and Chase Edmonds combined for over 100 yards on the ground in only 20 carries and their defense was able to shut down Cleveland’s top-flight rushing attack.

There will be a lot to unpack for the Browns in a very short amount of time before their game with the Broncos. Here are a few of the many questions we have immediately following the disheartening loss:

Browns Vs Cardinals Week 6 on going highlights

Keeping up with any and all Browns highlights from Week 6 match up with the Cardinals. Watch them all here:

The Cleveland Browns take on the Arizona Cardinals at home in Week 6. The Cardinals came in undefeated while the Browns fell to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6.

With a myriad of injuries for the home team and the visitors without their head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, it will be interesting how each team is impacted.

Without Nick Chubb, Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin, Cleveland’s run game will depend on backups, creative play calling and Kareem Hunt to carry them. D’Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton will support Hunt.

For Arizona, multiple coaches will be responsible for putting together an offense and managing the game. With the wind whipping, will Kyler Murray and company be able to explosive in the pass game?

Here are all the Browns highlights for today’s game:

Inactives for Browns Vs Cardinals:

A lot of key contributors are inactive for the Browns in Week 6 while no big surprises for the Cardinals:

The Cleveland Browns face off with the Arizona Cardinals at home on Sunday looking to right the ship after a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5. Injuries and COVID-19 have been the story of the week. The Browns have been dealing with the injuries while the Cardinals have been dealing with both injuries and COVID-related absences.

Chandler Jones will miss the game on the COVID-19 list along with Corey Peters, who was just added this morning. Rodney Hudson was added to the injured reserve this week as well.

For the Browns, Nick Chubb was ruled out earlier this week while other injuries continued to present concerns for the home team.

The teams just announced their inactives:

Cleveland

  • RB Nick Chubb
  • CB AJ Green
  • LB Malcolm Smith
  • OT Jedrick Wills
  • OT Jack Conklin
  • DT Tommy Togiai
  • DT Andrew Billings

As expected, Blake Hance will start at left tackle, James Hudson III starts at right tackle and Kareem Hunt starts at running back.

Arizona

  • TE Zach Ertz – Just acquired and not eligible to play after playing Thursday night for the Eagles
  • QB Chris Streveler
  • WR Andy Isabella
  • RB Eno Benjamin
  • LB Tanner Vallejo

No real surprises for the Cardinals.

Wind could have a big impact in multiple ways for Browns Vs Cardinals

Browns Vs Cardinals may be a high scoring affair but wind gusts could impact multiple areas on the field today:

The Cleveland Browns look to get back to their winning ways as they return home against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. Former Oklahoma Sooner teammates, and back to back Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray get another chance to play each other in the NFL.

The two matched up in 2019 with the Cardinals getting a victory late in the season in Arizona. In that game, Mayfield threw for 247 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while Murray, a rookie in 2019, threw 219 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Coming to Cleveland without their head coach and top edge defender, Arizona is looking to keep their undefeated season going.

The two quarterbacks may have more than the opposing defenses. The weather in Cleveland is supposed to be sunny and dry but with a chance for strong winds:

As noted in the tweet, the wind won’t be as bad as Browns games last year where throwing the ball was very limited. That doesn’t mean the wind won’t impact the game.

Report: Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin to miss game today

According to a morning report, the Browns will be without their starting tackles today against the Cardinals but good health news related to their defense:

The Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals will both be dealing with the loss of important people today. For the Browns, a few key offensive players will be out starting with running back Nick Chubb. For the Cardinals, a couple of important players will be out but, perhaps more importantly, a few coaches including Kliff Kingsbury will be out.

Replacing Chubb will be Kareem Hunt, D’Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton. Arizona will attempt to replace Kingsbury by splitting up most of his duties.

Cleveland had a number of players miss the game in Week 5 and had others leave the game due to injury.

Not surprisingly, because neither practiced this week, it looks like the Browns will be without both of their starting tackles:

With Chris Hubbard on injured reserve, and likely out for the year, Blake Hance is likely to start at left tackle while rookie Rodney Hudson at right tackle.

The good news is that the defense looks like it will be healthy for the game against the high powered Cardinals offense.

Browns Vs Cardinals Week 6: How to watch, listen and stream

Another late afternoon game for the Browns. How to watch, listen and stream Week 6:

While the Cleveland Browns season didn’t start the way they wanted, they have righted the ship and enter Week 6 of the NFL season with a 3 – 2 record. The Browns are still in position for all of their season-long goals but need to get a signature win against a quality opponent.

Knocking off the lone unbeaten team in the NFL, no matter what their limitations are due to coaching and COVID-19, would be just that.

Arizona is still a very talented offense despite losing their play caller for this game. The defense will be without defensive end Chandler Jones which should help the Browns but the loss of Nick Chubb will likely hurt.

In what Cleveland hopes is a game to get their momentum going before Thursday Night Football, Browns Vs Cardinals could be very challenging. Below are important game details about this Week 6 matchup. If you have questions about the game, reach out to us on Twitter @TheBrownsWire.

Browns Vs. Cardinals: Final injury report with 10 Browns questionable

The Browns have 10 listed as questionable and Nick Chubb as out while the Cardinals have five listed as questionable not including Chandler Jones on the COVID-19 list in Week 6’s final injury report:

The Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals will face off in Week 6 at First Energy Stadium. The undefeated Cardinals travel to face the 3 – 2 Browns in a game of former teammates and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks from Oklahoma.

Cleveland has been struggling with a variety of injury issues the last few weeks including ruling RB Nick Chubb out for this week.

The Browns will have 10 players listed as questionable for the game:

  • Jadeveon Clowney – Knee/elbow
  • Jack Conklin – Knee
  • Myles Garrett – Knee/ankle
  • A.J. Green – Shoulder/knee
  • Kareem Hunt – Wrist/knee
  • Takk McKinley – Knee/ankle
  • Greg Newsome II – Calf
  • JC Tretter – Knee
  • Denzel Ward – Neck
  • Jedrick Wills – Ankle

Only Wills and Conklin did not practice on Friday from that group. Wills, Clowney and Newsome did not play last week while Conklin and Ward left the game early.

Jarvis Landry was designated to return from injured reserve on Friday but has not been activated. The team could activate him still for Week 6 but that is not certain.

The Cardinals also have a few injury concerns but none as major and a much smaller list. Chandler Jones seems likely to miss the game due to COVID-19 diagnosis while center Rodney Hudson and linebacker Tanner Vallejo were ruled.

After being limited earlier in the week, Kyler Murray is not on the injured list neither is DeAndre Hopkins who was ill this week.

Arizona lists five as questionable for Sunday:

  • Byron Murphy – Ribs
  • Marco Wilson – Ribs
  • Jordan Hicks – Toe
  • Kelvin Beachum – Ribs
  • Chase Edmonds – Shoulder

While inactives are not due until 90 minutes prior to the game, we could hear updates on some of the questionable players as early as Saturday. With Wills and Conklin not practicing this week, they are the least likely to play on Sunday.

We will keep you up to date as injury news is released.

Behind Enemy Lines: Cardinals expert weighs in on Week 6 matchup

Behind Enemy Lines with Jess Root of @TheCardsWire to breakdown Week 6 between the Browns and Cardinals:

In preparation for the Cleveland Browns Week 6 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, we went Behind Enemy Lines with Jess Root of Cardinals Wire. We wanted to find out what the expectations in Arizona are for this game and what kinks in the armor might be present for the undefeated Cardinals:

Is there one thing the Browns can try to stop that will make a win certain?

The biggest bugaboo to the offense is big negative plays. When it stays on schedule, it is nearly impossible to stop. However, because Kyler Murray takes deep drops, he can be susceptible to the 15-yard sack. If the Browns get a couple of sacks or force a couple of big penalties, they can slow the offense. Also, like any other offense, turnovers are key. The Cardinals have been great about protecting the football and great about taking it away.

Is the undefeated record a big thing for the Cardinals coaches and players?

Yes and no. The message is clear and consistent. They want to be 1-0 every day and every week. Yes, winning every game is important, but they are not looking back or looking ahead. They have big goals for this year, but publicly, they have been very persistent about staying in the present.

If Chandler Jones can’t play, who will threaten the injury-limited Cleveland offensive tackles in passing situations?

We haven’t seen hardly anything from J.J. Watt off the edge this season. I don’t know if they will start this week, but Markus Golden will be the main focus, while Dennis Gardeck, who had seven sacks last season in only 93 defensive snaps, Devon Kennard and Isaiah Simmons will play on the other side.

Has cross-country travel had an impact on Arizona in recent years?

When the Cardinals have been a bad, subpar or even a mediocre team, they struggled back East, especially in the early time slot. This weekend’s game is obviously a late game, but they have been much improved since the start of Kliff Kingsbury’s time as head coach.

What do you predict the score for the game to be?

I think this is the game where the Cardinals finally take an L. They definitely can win, but they have to adjust to no Maxx Williams or Rodney Hudson. They now will likely not have Chandler Jones. I believe this will go down to the wire but the Browns are victorious, picking up a 27-24 win.

Cardinals injuries: Kyler Murray limited, OL Rodney Hudson out

The Cardinals will be without their starting center Sunday and Chandler Jones’ status is up in the air. The biggest news is that Kyler Murray was limited with a throwing shoulder issue in practice:

The Cleveland Browns face off with the Arizona Cardinals in a big Week 6 matchup. With the Cardinals coming in undefeated, the Browns have their hands full as they fight to avoid dropping down to a .500 record early in the 2021 season.

The story for Cleveland this week will be injuries. The team has a significant amount of starters who could be questionable for the game. While the Browns get the benefit of the home game, Arizona has played very well this season and could easily knock off an injury-riddled Cleveland squad.

The Cardinals have their own concerns with players being limited or missing Sunday’s matchup. We’ve noted the concerns with their top pass rusher, Chandler Jones, being placed on the COVID-19 list and his status for Sunday up in the air.

Now comes news that two important offensive pieces have injury issues. Rodney Hudson will miss the matchup in Cleveland due to rib and shoulder problems. The more important news is that electric quarterback Kyler Murray was limited in practice due to a shoulder issue.

Murray was seen getting medical attention on his throwing shoulder during last Sunday’s game. The Cardinals quarterback had an AC joint issue in the same shoulder last year which coincided with a drop in production late in the season.

While Murray was limited in practice, the expectation is that he will play on Sunday. How much his shoulder limits his ability to push the ball downfield could dramatically impact the outcome of the game.
