Reaction: Nick Chubb unfairly blamed after Browns blow late lead

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb is being criticized for scoring a late touchdown. We don’t think this is warranted

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb is being criticized for scoring a late touchdown to give the Browns a 29-17 lead. Cleveland made a series of disastrous plays and decisions after Chubb’s third touchdown of the day to lose the game 31-30 to the Jets.

Cleveland’s first mistake came when head coach Kevin Stefanski elected to kick an extra point instead of going for two after Chubb’s touchdown. A 13-point lead is much more vulnerable than a 14-point lead. A two-point conversion attempt was worth trying in hindsight.

Additionally, the Browns gave up a big touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to give the Jets a chance. Defenders in the secondary blew the coverage. You can’t get beat deep at that stage in the game with a two score lead.

Lastly, Cleveland failed to recover an onside kick and then allowed the Jets to drive down the field and score another touchdown. These are reasons why we think the criticism of Nick Chubb far-fetched. A lot of folks deserve blame before Nick Chubb, a former Georgia Bulldog, who scored three touchdowns and was a big reason why the Browns were in a position to win.

Here’s how the media, coaches, and fans reacted following Chubb’s touchdown:

Former Georgia Bulldog running back Nick Chubb scored a long touchdown run for the Cleveland Browns.

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb scored another explosive touchdown run against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 11. Chubb, who played four seasons of college football at the University of Georgia, has 523 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Browns this season.

Only Tennessee’s Derrick Henry has more rushing yards than Nick Chubb. Additionally, Chubb is averaging an impressive 5.8 yards per carry.

Here’s a look at Nick Chubb’s 52 yard touchdown run against the Los Angeles Chargers:

Despite Nick Chubb’s big game, the Cleveland Browns fell to the Los Angeles Chargers 47-42. The game featured a crazy fourth quarter.

Cleveland is now 3-2. The Brown’s have one of the NFL’s top rushing offenses, but will need better performances from their defense moving forward.

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb is not planning on leaving the organization any time soon. Chubb, who played four seasons of college football at the University of Georgia, has signed a contract extension with the Browns.

Chubb signed a three-year extension worth $36.6 million on July 31. More than half of his contract ($20 million) is fully guaranteed.

The Cleveland Browns found a gem in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft with Nick Chubb. Chubb suffered a major knee injury in college, but has only missed four games throughout his NFL career.

Nick Chubb’s career offers an interesting case study for the running back position. Chubb split carries most seasons with Sony Michel in college and is now sharing carries with Browns running back Kareem Hunt. Will Chubb’s shared backfield duties help elongate his NFL career? The Cleveland Browns certainly hope so.

Nick Chubb is quite deserving of his contract extension. The former Georgia star has averaged 1,186 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns per season throughout his three season NFL career.

Former Georgia RB Nick Chubb set to return following injury

Former Georgia Bulldog and current Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb will return following a sprained MCL he suffered in week four.

Former Georgia Bulldogs star and current Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb will return for Cleveland this week. Chubb will provide a boost to the Browns, who need him in order to attempt to make the postseason.

Nick Chubb is returning to action following a right MCL sprain he suffered in Cleveland’s Week 4 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Chubb is averaging an impressive 5.9 yards per carry on the season. In four games, the University of Georgia product ran for 335 rushing yards and scored four rushing touchdowns.

Fantasy football managers with Chubb on their roster will be happy to see him return. Despite his recent injury, Chubb is a must-start player in all formats. Chubb’s return reduces the value of Cleveland running back Kareem Hunt. Look for Hunt to continue to have a significant role in the passing game.

Cleveland is currently 5-3 overall. The Browns went 2-2 without Nick Chubb and will need him to defeat the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon. The Browns are in the mix in the AFC’s playoff hunt. The NFL’s expanded postseason gives the Browns a better chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Earlier this week, Chubb returned to practice. He rocked a knee brace at practice, but looks explosive. See for yourself:

Nick Chubb still has more explosive rushing plays than any other player in the NFL despite playing in only four games.

Former Georgia RB Nick Chubb enters NFL concussion protocol

Former Georgia Bulldog Nick Chubb has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head/neck area in training camp

Former Georgia Bulldog Nick Chubb has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head/neck area in training camp. The Cleveland Browns running back finished second in the NFL in rushing yards (1,494) last season behind Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

The former UGA standout has played in every game throughout his two year NFL career. Cleveland will miss him should he miss any game action. Hopefully, Chubb can heal up soon and get ready for the start of the NFL season.

The Cleveland Browns open their season against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13. Kareem Hunt will assume the starting role in the Cleveland backfield until Chubb returns. Chubb must go through the various steps of the protocol before he’ll be able to fully return to practice and eventually able to play in a game.

Chubb is a key fixture in Cleveland’s offense. The Browns will look to improve upon their 6-10 record from last season.

We will provide updates on the status of Chubb’s recovery. His injury could open the door for Cleveland to bring back former Georgia Bulldog Brian Herrien. The Browns previously cut Herrien this offseason.

Cleveland Browns waive former Georgia running back

The Cleveland Browns have waived former Georgia Bulldogs running back Brian Herrien.

The Cleveland Browns have waived former Georgia Bulldogs running back Brian Herrien. The Browns picked up Herrien as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.

Herrien is a victim of the NFL’s shortened preseason (there’s no preseason games due to COVID-19). Additionally, NFL teams have a much smaller initial roster size than in previous years. In a normal season, Herrien would’ve played in a few preseason games and had a chance to display his abilities.

Instead, Herrien has barely had an opportunity to show his talent and work ethic. Herrien has been doubted before. He overcame a low rating as a high school recruit to see immediate playing time in Georgia’s loaded backfield in 2016. The Georgia Bulldog great will look to do the same in the NFL.

He ran for 490 yards and scored six touchdowns last season for the Dawgs. Herrien will look to find a new NFL home as soon as possible. Best of luck to Herrien.

Brian Herrien may have a better opportunity to earn carries for another NFL team. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are very talented running backs and wouldn’t have ceded many carries to a rookie.

Throwback to his incredible catch this past season against the Florida Gators:

Georgia fans: there’s another AJ Green in the NFL

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver AJ Green could face former Oklahoma State Cowboys DB AJ Green twice per season.

Former Georgia Bulldog great AJ Green is arguably the best wide receiver in UGA history. Despite some recent injury issues, Green is among the best receivers in the NFL.

Now, Bengals receiver AJ Green isn’t the only AJ Green in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns have signed former Oklahoma State Cowboys defensive back AJ Green to an undrafted free agent deal:

As ESPN’s Field Yates notes, AJ Green isn’t the only undrafted player to have a familiar name. It remains to be seen if the Oklahoma State product will be able to stick to an NFL roster. If he can crack the rotation of Cleveland’s defensive backs, then he would face Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver AJ Green twice per season.

To confuse matters further during his spectacular career at Georgia, AJ Green, played a game against the Oklahoma Cowboys. Green caught four passes for 52 yards in the contest. Notably, he faced off against Dez Bryant, who scored two touchdowns to help the Cowboys get the better of the Dawgs 24-10 on that season-opening day.

New England Patriots tight end, former Georgia Bulldog retires

New England Patriots tight end and former Georgia Bulldog Benjamin Watson announced his retirement from the NFL.

New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson announced he was likely retiring following a stunning 20-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans in the NFL Playoffs. Watson, a former Georgia Bulldog, is 39 years old. Now he’s officially announced his retirement via Twitter.

Watson, a long-time social advocate, won’t be retiring from the public eye. In his lengthy retirement message Watson thanks numerous family members, friends, and teams (he played for the Browns, Patriots, Saints, and Ravens):

Watson finished the 2019 season with 17 catches for 173 yards and no touchdowns. Against the Titans, Watson had an explosive play called back due to an ineligible receiver down field:

Tom Brady and New England’s offense struggled in the second half against Tennessee’s stout defense. It was the Patriot’s first Wildcard exit in a decade.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Watson’s likely retirement following the NFL Playoffs:

Upon further review, Schefter’s announcement was a little premature. During postgame interviews, Watson wanted to discuss his future with his family. Watson says, “He wants to be back here, but probably won’t be playing”:

Watson retired as a New Orleans Saint after last season’s tough defeat in the NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams. Now, it looks like he’s retired for good.

In Watson’s long career (2004-2019),  he caught 547 receptions for 6,058 yards, and scored 44 touchdowns. Watson is an excellent representative of the University of Georgia and what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog.
