10 things to watch for in Broncos’ preseason game vs. Packers

The Broncos are set to host the Packers in their Week 2 of NFL preseason. Here are ten things to watch for on Sunday night.

After defeating the Indianapolis Colts 34-30 in their preseason opener last week, the Denver Broncos are now set to host the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of preseason on Sunday night.

Before the nationally televised showdown with the Packers arrives, here’s a quick list of 10 things we’ll be watching for against Green Bay.

1. Eyioma Uwazurike’s return: Uwazurike’s gambling suspension was lifted before the team’s preseason opener, but coach Sean Payton did not want to rush the defensive lineman back into action. After more than a year away from football, Uwazurike is now expected to make his return on Sunday.

2. Trenton Gill’s push for punting duties: Gill and incumbent Riley Dixon are competing for the punter job this summer. Dixon got the first two reps last week, and they ended up being the only reps. It’s a nice problem to have when the offense moves the ball so well that punters are rarely called upon, but the Broncos would like to get Gill some live-game reps this week.

3. Riley Moss stepping up at cornerback: Moss seems to be the favorite to start across from Pat Surtain this season. “[O]ne thing that he does exceptionally well is he phases the receivers well … his technique is good, he’s long and I’d say he has really good instincts,” Payton said earlier this week. Moss and Damarri Mathis are competing for the CB2 role.

4. Kris Abrams-Draine fighting for playing time: Abrams-Draine was one of the standout performers in Week 1 of preseason. We’ll see if that trend continues for the rookie cornerback in Week 2.

5. Samaje Perine stock watch: Perine had a game to forget last week and he might be in danger of not making the 53-man roster. He’ll need to finish preseason on a positive note to get back into the running back conversation.

6. Jonah Elliss competing for more playing time: Elliss is another rookie who impressed in the first week of preseason. “There’s some good tape with him,” Payton said of Elliss’ first game. Elliss will look to build on that positive performance.

7. Troy Franklin needs a bounce-back game: Franklin was invisible in the team’s preseason opener with one target and no catches. Franklin has also had a few drops at training camp this summer and his stock is low going into the Packers game. He needs a bounce-back performance.

8. Offensive line looking for another no-sack performance: Denver’s quarterbacks did not take any sacks last week. That reflects well on the team’s offensive line, the quarterbacks and the scheme. We can’t expect no-sack performances every week, but it will be interesting to see if last week’s protection carries over to the Green Bay game.

9. Jarrett Stidham vs. Zach Wilson: Stidham will get more reps this week after playing just two drives last week. Wilson will get clean-up duties again after performing well in Indianapolis. “I thought he had a real good game and I’m encouraged,” Payton said of Wilson. “I like what I’m seeing.” If Nix does win the starting job as expected, Stidham and Wilson will be competing for QB2 duties to close out preseason.

10. Bo Nix’s first (preseason) start in the NFL: Nix looked sharp in his debut last week, but it wasn’t a perfect performance. “There’s two plays where I think he can set his feet,” Payton said. “He’s kind of backing up a little and we can clean that up.” We’ll be watching to see if Nix has better footwork against the Packers.

Sunday’s game will be nationally televised on NFL Network and available to stream on fuboTV (try it free). Secondary market tickets for Denver’s preseason home opener start at $52. Next week, the Broncos will close out preseason at home against the Arizona Cardinals.

Denver is ultimately preparing for a regular season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, a road game on Sunday, Sept. 8 in Week 1.

Sean Payton has ‘a good problem’ with Broncos’ wide receivers

“We potentially have guys that may end up playing for another team,” Sean Payton said of the Broncos’ depth at wide receiver.

The Denver Broncos have an extremely crowded wide receiver depth chart going into the second week of NFL preseason.

Courtland Sutton is coming off a 10-touchdown season and he is the team’s No. 1 receiver. Marvin Mims is one of the best returners in the NFL. Josh Reynolds just signed with the team during free agency this spring. Denver just used a fourth-round pick to draft Troy Franklin in April.

Those four players have to be considered locks, and the Broncos only carried four receivers on their initial 53-man roster last year. Surely, Denver will carry at least five WRs this season.

Even with an extra spot, though, it will be hard to choose between veteran Tim Patrick, seventh-round pick Devaughn Vele and others. Jalen Virgil adds value as a returner. Lil’Jordan Humphrey has the height coach Sean Payton looks for in a receiverBrandon Johnson scored four touchdowns last season.

Have fun choosing between them.

“Yesterday we spent a lot of time on personnel,” Payton said Wednesday. “Sometimes the nod is kicking game related. Sometimes the nod might be experience. There’s a lot that goes into it. … More than I can recall anywhere, the depth in competition at that position group — we potentially have guys that may end up playing for another team.

“It’s still early in the process. I think it’s a real good question and it’s the reality of this camp right now. These guys are working hard and it’s a good problem to have.”

As Payton noted, it’s a luxury problem, but the Broncos don’t want to waive a receiver and then see him shine for another club. Denver might consider attempting to trade a receiver or two when roster cuts approach later this month. Our latest 53-man roster prediction has five WRs with Vele making the squad over Patrick. Barring trades or injuries, the Broncos will have to make some very tough decisions at the position this summer. The initial roster will be set on Aug. 27.

Broncos announce uniform combo for preseason game vs. Packers

After wearing white jerseys and white pants last week, the Broncos will wear white jerseys with orange pants this week.

The Denver Broncos broke out their new uniforms for the first time in their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts last week.

The Broncos wore their primary road white jersey with white pants and their primary blue helmet, a look that received mostly positive reviews from fans. This week, Denver will wear the white jersey at home with orange pants, the team announced on Thursday.

The Broncos have already announced their jersey schedule for every game this season, but the pants are picked by players the week of each game. Denver opted to wear white jerseys for both preseason home games, presumably because of the August heat.

The Broncos will also wear a white jersey at home when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, an early September game.

After wearing white pants in their first preseason game and orange pants this week, it wouldn’t be surprising if Denver breaks out blue pants for a preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals next week.

The Broncos’ next two preseason games will be nationally televised.

Broncos make two roster moves ahead of Packers preseason game

The Broncos re-signed linebacker Alec Mock and waived pass rusher Jaylon Allen.

The Denver Broncos made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday.

First, the Broncos signed inside linebacker Alec Mock. To make room for Mock on the 90-man offseason roster, Denver waived rookie outside linebacker Jaylon Allen in a second move.

Allen (6-3, 240 pounds) was waived with an injury settlement. He joined the team this spring as an undrafted rookie out of Memphis.

Mock (6-3, 240 pounds) originally signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent from the Air Force Academy on May 10. He was cut on June 20 and then re-signed on Aug. 6. The Broncos cut him again on Aug. 12 and have now re-signed him again on Aug. 14 after he cleared waivers.

In four seasons with the Air Force Falcons, Mock totaled 224 tackles, five sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception returned 18 yards for a touchdown.

Denver will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of NFL preseason on Sunday night. The game will be nationally televised on NFL Network.

Broncos teammates let Jarrett Stidham down in first preseason game

Jarrett Stidham’s first drive was stalled by penalties and his second drive ended with Samaje Perine tipped a pass into an interception.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix looked sharp in the team’s preseason opener. Broncos veteran Jarrett Stidham looked fine, but that uninspiring description is no fault of his own.

Stidham’s first drive was stalled by three penalties committed by his teammates. Denver was driving within field goal range between Tim Patrick (taunting), Courtland Sutton (false start) and Mike McGlinchey (false start) committed penalties that stalled the offense’s progress.

“I thought we moved the ball really well,” Stidham said after the game. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot, mainly those first two drives with penalties and that sort of thing. …

“Obviously, we’ll take a look at the film and get better from it, and obviously clean up the penalties,” Stidham said. “Like I said, that was probably the biggest thing, but thought we were pretty efficient there, pretty early on. Obviously, just the penalties, we’ve got to figure that out for sure.”

On the team’s next drive, the Broncos started at their own 20 and they were approaching midfield when Stidham threw an accurate pass to running back Samaje Perine. The usually-sure-handed running back bobbled the pass and tipped it into Kenny Moore, giving an assist on an interception.

That went down as an interception for Stidham and another failed drive, but it certainly wasn’t his fault.

Stidham finished the game 4-of-7 passing for 37 yards. Through no fault of his own, it was not a memorable performance. The 28-year-old quarterback will look to bounce back when Denver hosts the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 of preseason.

Broncos’ quarterback competition will heat up this week

The Broncos’ QB competition is entering a crucial week as Denver prepares to host the Packers for a joint practice and preseason showdown.

The Denver Broncos‘ quarterback competition will heat up this week when the Green Bay Packers come to town.

Broncos veteran Jarrett Stidham got the start in the team’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but he only played two drives and those drives were shot in the foot by penalties and a turnover.

Denver rookie Bo Nix then entered the game and impressed, but he played against mostly backup defenders. Zach Wilson got mop-up duties and was efficient, going 10-of-13 passing for 117 yards.

“All three of those guys I thought did a good job,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after a 34-30 win. “We start with Stiddy and he gets a tough break where the ball bounces off [Samaje] Perine. We’re in scoring position before Tim [Patrick]’s penalty. We’re in scoring position and the penalty brings us out of the scoring position, but all three of them did a good job.”

Nix is now set to start against the Packers in Week 2 of preseason, but the QB battle will face an important test before Sunday’s game.

Green Bay is expected to rest most starters against the Broncos in Week 2 of preseason, but those starters will feature in a joint practice in Denver on Friday. Stidham and Nix are both expected to get first-team reps against Packers defenders, and it could be a pivotal practice for the QB battle.

“I think it’s probably the most important part of the evaluation – these [preseason] games and then the scrimmages,” Payton said.

Nix looked sharp against backups in Indianapolis. If he continues to play well when he faces Green Bay’s starters this week, perhaps the Broncos could announce a starting quarterback before their preseason finale. Payton has not given a timeline for when a starter will be announced, but it’s clear that this week will be important for Stidham and Nix.

Sean Payton not happy with Broncos’ turnovers in first preseason game

“We had four fumbles,” Sean Payton said after the Broncos’ first preseason game. “That has to be better.”

The Denver Broncos defeated the Indianapolis Colts 34-30 in their preseason opener on Sunday. Despite coming away with a victory, Denver coach Sean Payton had a few grievances with his team’s performance.

“There’s going to be a lot of tape that we like,” Payton said after the win. “Then there’s going to be a handful of things that we’ve got to get cleaned up. And really, when you look at the ball security issues – we had four fumbles. That has to be better.

“We talked about it coming into this game, this defense does a good job. They play a lot more zone coverage. They try to separate the ball from the receivers or runners, and so we’re fortunate in that regards to still get the win. I [also] didn’t like the penalties.”

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix muffed a snap (and recovered it), fellow QB Zach Wilson and running back Blake Watson fumbled an exchange on a handoff, running back Audric Estime had a fumble that was returned by the Colts for a touchdown and tight end Lucas Krull also lost a fumble.

“[T]wo rookies had the ball on the ground,” Payton said. “One was a touchdown, and the other one, obviously we were able to recover, but a significant play later in the game. So those are the things that you’ve just got to make sure you clean up and those guys will learn from it.”

The good news is Denver has two more preseason games to get the miscues cleaned up before facing the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Players who made mistakes in Indianapolis have to learn from them and not repeat them.

“[T]hose are lessons and pretty soon, they’re lessons that can’t happen,” Payton said. “That was something I talked about last night. I told the coaches, that’s one concern I have is the ball security in this game coming in. It kind of manifested kind of how I thought unfortunately, I mean, they do a good job of holding players up, stripping the ball – that was Audric’s turnover. We had the exchange problem late in the game, and then obviously those are things that you hope to be cleaning up before the regular season starts.”

In addition to the turnovers, the Broncos also committed six penalties, including three on the opening drive that knocked them out of field goal range.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot, mainly those first two drives with penalties and that sort of thing,” quarterback Jarrett Stidham said after the game. “But I mean a lot of good I thought. Obviously, we’ll take a look at the film and get better from it, and obviously clean up the penalties. Like I said, that was probably the biggest thing, but thought we were pretty efficient there, pretty early on. Obviously, just the penalties, we’ve got to figure that out for sure.”

Stidham’s first drive stalled after Tim Patrick (taunting), Courtland Sutton (false start) and Mike McGlinchey (false start) were penalized. Stidham’s second drive ended when running back Samaje Perine bobbled an accurate pass and tipped it into an interception. Those are the kind of mistakes Denver will need to clean up before next week’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

Bo Nix didn’t care about the football from his first (preseason) touchdown in the NFL

Bo Nix nonchalantly gave the football back to the referee after scoring his first (preseason) touchdown in the NFL.

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix looked sharp in his NFL debut against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, going 15-of-21 passing for 125 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers.

In the second quarter, Nix threw a one-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marvin Mims. That marked the quarterback’s first touchdown in the NFL, albeit in a preseason game. Nix apparently didn’t give much thought to it.

“I tried giving Bo Nix the ball afterwards but I think he gave it back to the refs,” Mims said after the game. “So he is waiting for that a first regular season (touchdown), I guess.”

A Broncos fan posted a great video of the play on Reddit that shows Nix tossing the ball to the officials after the play:

Bo Nix’s first TD is to Marvin Mims!
byu/GanjaRelease inDenverBroncos

“It was a nice play by Marv,” Nix said after the game. “He did a good job of getting to the corner, and we executed well. We’ve been practicing and repping that play quite a lot, and they bumped it off and had some space, and we were able to get a touchdown.”

First touchdown in the NFL? No big deal. Nix has more important touchdowns on his agenda. Bring on the regular season.
