Broncos injury report: Window opens for safety to return from PUP

Broncos safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) returned to practice today, starting his 21-day window to return from the PUP list.

Denver Broncos safety Delarrin Turner-Yell returned to practice on Wednesday, officially starting his 21-day window to return from the physically unable to perform list.

Turner-Yell tore his ACL and meniscus in Week 17 last season. The Broncos now have three weeks to active him to the 53-man roster. If Turner-Yell is not activated within three weeks, he will remain on reserve for the rest of the season.

Denver has one other player — linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) — on the PUP list. He’s apparently not ready to open his practice window yet.

Elsewhere on the injury front, safety P.J. Locke (thumb) did not practice Wednesday and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) was also held out.

As for the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Lamar Jackson (back/knee) did not practice on Wednesday. Ravens coach John Harbaugh described Jackson’s absence as a rest day.

For the first time since a Christmas meltdown, CBS gives Broncos their top TV crew

For the first time since their Christmas meltdown against the Rams in 2022, the Broncos will have a game called by Jim Nantz and Tony Romo.

The Baltimore Ravens (5-3) are set to host the Denver Broncos (5-3) in Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season in a game that will have big playoff implications in the AFC on Sunday. Consequently, CBS is treating the matchup as a big game.

CBS has assigned its No. 1 commentary crew of Jim Nantz (play-by-play), Tony Romo (analyst) and Tracy Wolfson (sideline reporter) to the Broncos-Ravens game in Baltimore.

The last time CBS assigned this crew to a Denver game was Christmas Day in 2022 when the Los Angeles Rams dominated the Broncos 51-14. That was one of three Christmas Day games that season — most of the NFL’s other matchups that week were played on Saturday.

As Andrew Mason of DenverSports.com pointed out on Twitter this week, the last typical Sunday game featuring the Broncos with the No. 1 crew from CBS happened five years ago in 2019.

Playing on the road, Denver is considered a big underdog this week. Broncos fans will hope the game doesn’t bring back memories of the team’s Christmas calamity two years ago.

Broncos RB Tyler Badie eligible to return from IR this week

Broncos running back Tyler Badie (back) is eligible to return from injured reserve this week.

After spending the last four weeks on injured reserve, Denver Broncos running back Tyler Badie (back) is eligible to return this week.

Badie (5-8, 197 pounds) was placed on IR earlier this month after he suffered a scary back injury against the New York Jets in Week 4. It’s unclear if he’ll need more time to recover, but his window to return is now open.

Once the running back returns to practice, the Broncos will have 21 days to active him to the 53-man roster. If Badie is not activated within three weeks after returning to practice, he will spend the rest of the season on IR.

Badie, 24, rushed 11 times for 86 yards and hauled in three receptions for negative two yards in three games before injuring his back.

Denver currently has Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and rookie Audric Estime on the active roster and Blake Watson on the practice squad. Badie will likely compete for the RB3 role once he returns from the injury.

Ravens trade for talented wide receiver ahead of Broncos game

The Ravens are bringing in wide receiver Diontae Johnson ahead of their game against the Broncos this week.

The Baltimore Ravens are bringing in reinforcements ahead of their home game against the Denver Broncos this week.

The Ravens have agreed to trade a fifth-round draft pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for wide receiver Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Johnson (5-10, 183 pounds) was a second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers before landing with the Panthers via trade this spring. After dropping to 1-7 following their 28-14 loss to the Broncos on Sunday, the Panthers decided to ship out the 28-year-old receiver in order to upgrade their draft capital in 2025.

Johnson sat out last week’s game against Denver with a rib injury, but he played against the Broncos twice during his tenure with the Steelers. Johnson totaled 10 receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns in his previous matchups against Denver’s defense.

Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson now has another weapon as Johnson joins an offense that also includes running back Derrick Henry, tight end Mark Andrews and receivers Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.

Sunday’s matchup just got tougher for the Broncos.

Broncos QB Bo Nix nominated for weekly NFL award

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has been nominated for the NFL’s Rookie of the Week award. Go vote!

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has been nominated for the NFL’s Rookie of the Week award following a 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Nix had his best professional game to date, completing 28-of-37 passes (75.7%) for 284 yards, no turnovers, a 124.2 passer rating, and accounted for all four Broncos touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).

This is Nix’s third Rookie of the Week nomination; he also earned recognition after wins over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3.

Nix is up against some tough competition this week, including Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had a miraculous Hail Mary throw against the Chicago Bears in Week 8, and four other rookies:

  • QB Bo Nix: 284 passing yards, four total TDs (3 passing, 1 rushing)
  • QB Jayden Daniels: 326 passing yards, 56 rushing yards, 1 TD
  • WR Marvin Harrison:111 receiving yards, 1 TD
  • RB Isaac Guerendo: 102 scrimmage yards (85 rushing, 17 receiving), rushing TD
  • WR Ladd McConkey: 111 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs
  • RB Tyrone Tracy: 150 scrimmage yards (145 rushing, 5 receiving), rushing TD

Through eight games, Nix has 12 total touchdowns (eight passing, four rushing), five interceptions, 1,530 yards passing, completing 63.5 percent of his passes and 259 rushing yards. Fans can vote for Nix until Thursday morning on NFL.com.

4 (realistic?) trade targets for Broncos ahead of NFL’s deadline

Will the Broncos trade for a tight end ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline? Here are four players the team could consider.

With the NFL trade deadline (Nov. 5) now one week away, we are once again revisiting the topic of potential trade candidates for the Denver Broncos.

Last week, we listed five high-profile tight ends, five star wide receivers and a trio of New Orleans Saints players who the Broncos could target before the trade deadline. While exciting candidates, those 13 players might not necessarily be realistic targets.

Today, we’re taking a quick look at four players who could be more realistic candidates for Denver to bring in before the deadline.

Broncos realistic (?) trade targets

1. TE Jordan Akins: The Browns probably don’t want to trade David Njoku, but Adkins could be an expendable tight end. He has 16 receptions for 140 yards and one score this year, better totals than all of Denver’s tight ends.

2. TE Connor Heyward: The Steelers seem unlikely to part with Pat Freiermuth, but Heyward has seen his role decline a bit this year despite being productive in the past.

3. TE Austin Hooper: Sensing a trend? The Patriots are happy with Hunter Henry, but perhaps they would be willing to part with Hooper. His career averages out to 50 receptions for 501 yards and 3 touches per season.

4. WR Jonathan Mingo: Diontae Johnson would likely have a big price tag, but Mingo could be a more realistic target. The former second-round pick is underutilized in a woeful Panthers offense.

As the NFL’s trade deadline approaches, will track any potential moves for Denver on Broncos Wire.

Baron Browning comments on Broncos trade rumors

“I don’t want to leave but some things are out of my control,” Broncos OLB Baron Browning said when asked about trade rumors.

The Denver Broncos have a deep pass-rush rotation and outside linebacker Baron Browning might be viewed as an expendable asset leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline (Nov. 5).

Over the weekend, NFL Network reported that Browning “could be available” on the trade block. Following a 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Browning was asked about the trade speculation.

“I can only control what I can control,’’ Browning said, via KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. “I can’t control what happens in the future, I have to stay in the moment. I do what I can to help this team win games. I would like to stay here. I don’t want to leave but some things are out of my control.”

Browning lost his starting job to Nik Bonitto while on injured reserve. Bonitto (6.0) leads the team in sacks this fall and Jonathon Cooper (5.5) is not far behind. Jonah Elliss (2.0) and Dondrea Tillman (2.0) have also made their mark as rotational pass rushers.

Browning, a third-round pick in 2021, is still seeking his first sack of the season.

Bo Nix was the NFL’s best rookie quarterback in October

Bo Nix ranked 1st in passing yards, 1st in passing TDs, 1st in TD-to-INT ratio and 1st in rushing TDs among rookie quarterbacks in October.

After a shaky start, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix is heating up.

Nix threw no touchdown passes and four interceptions through his first two games in the NFL in September. Since then, he has totaled eight touchdown passes and one interception in his last six games.

Nix was the NFL’s best rookie quarterback in October, posting better numbers than No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams and No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels.

Nix, the No. 12 overall pick in April, currently leads all NFL rookies with 12 total touchdowns (eight passing and four rushing), via Aric DiLalla of the team’s official website.

This is how Nix stacked up among rookie quarterbacks in October, via CBS Sports:

Stat Total Rank
Passing TDs 7 1st
Pass TDs/INTs 7/1 1st
Passing Yards 870 1st
Rushing TDs 2 1st
Wins 3 1st-T

That’s a pretty impressive month for Denver’s rookie quarterback.

Nix broke the team’s franchise record for the most wins by a rookie quarterback with his fifth victory on Sunday. Nix also became the first quarterback in Broncos history to throw for three touchdowns, rush for a touchdown and not throw an interception in a single game.

Nix can obviously still improve, but he’s trending in the right direction. The 24-year-old QB seems to be a perfect fit for coach Sean Payton’s offense.

Broncos DL Malcolm Roach appealing outrageous fine from NFL

The NFL fined Broncos DL Malcolm Roach $14,069 for a “violent gesture” against the Saints in Week 7. Roach is appealing the fine.

Denver Broncos defensive lineman Malcolm Roach went viral during a Thursday Night Football showdown with the New Orleans Saints in Week 7 after he dropped back in coverage, broke up a pass and celebrated by pretending to strap on a seatbelt.

The NFL mistook that celebration for a gun reference — something the league has been cracking down on — and Roach was fined $14,069 for a “violent gesture.” The lineman is now appealing the fine.

“Roach raised his shirt to show his seatbelt was locked and the NFL thought he was making a gesture of showing a gun,” Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette reported on Monday.

Broncos cornerback Levi Wallace was also fined $7,181 for a hip-drop tackle against the Saints.

Roach ($25,324), safety P.J. Locke ($27,944), defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers ($14,069), safety Brandon Jones ($11,255), outside linebacker Nik Bonitto ($8,791), fullback Mike Burton ($7,653) and center Luke Wattenberg ($5,872) have received fines from the NFL this season.

The money the league receives from fines is “donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels,” per the NFL.

NFL Network says Broncos OLB Baron Browning ‘could be available’ via trade

Broncos OLB Baron Browning “could be available” leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline, according to NFL Network.

With the NFL trade deadline (Nov. 5) now just over one week away, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning has been named a potential trade candidate.

“A converted off-the-ball LB who had 4.5 sacks last year, Browning’s playing time has dwindled in Denver and he’s in a contract year,” Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero wrote on NFL.com on Saturday. “He could be available. Denver has depth at the position.”

The Broncos had a nearly-even four-player pass rush on Sunday, spreading out snaps between Browning (33), Jonathon Cooper (33), Jonah Elliss (29) and Nik Bonitto (29). Dondrea Tillman was a healthy scratch on Sunday, but he played well when Browning was sidelined earlier this season.

With so much depth at the positon, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Denver listen to trade offers for Browning leading up to the deadline. Rapoport and Pelissero also wrote that Cooper “could draw interest as well,” but the Broncos seem less likely to trade him.

Bonitto (6.0) and Cooper (5.5) lead the team in sacks this fall. Elliss and Tillman both have two. Browning has been available for four games and is yet to record his first sack of the season.
