Auburn completes sweep of Missouri, ends regular season on 8-game winning streak

The Tigers are playing their best baseball right at the start of postseason play.

The Auburn Tigers are officially red-hot.

After taking both games in Friday’s doubleheader over Missouri, they had a chance to sweep their second straight SEC series. It wasn’t looking good as they entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing 7-4 in Plainsman Park Saturday.

As it has all season Auburn’s offense came alive when they needed it most, exploding for five runs to take a commanding 9-7 lead and win the game. Auburn secured its fifth straight SEC series win and ended the season on an eight-game winning streak with the comeback. They are now 33-19-1 overall and 17-13 in league play.

“We absolutely played hard and kept going,” Auburn coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said. “When it opened up and we got an opportunity, we made the most of it.”

[autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag] started the eighth inning off with a single and came around to score on a [autotag]Chris Stanfield[/autotag] double to get the scoring started. [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] then singled Stanfield home to pull Auburn within one.

[autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] followed up a [autotag]Bobby Pierce[/autotag] strikeout with a double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position with two outs for [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag]. Missouri decided to intentionally walk him to load the bases for freshmen [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag].

Before he could do anything the Missouri pitcher threw a wild pitch that allowed Foster to score and make it a 7-7 game.

Irish then put Auburn ahead with a two-RBI single to make it a 9-7 game.

“We battled and we fought, we figured some stuff out and it’s all come together here lately,” Irish said. “I was not trying to do too much, stay with my approach and put the ball in play, especially with two strikes. They shifted on me and I hit it where they weren’t, and we got one to sneak through.”

He finished the game with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Auburn was playing catchup the whole game after Missouri scored three runs in the first inning. They got two of the runs back in the second inning after [autotag]Caden Green[/autotag] and Stanfield hit sacrifice flies to score Irish and [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag], respectively.

Missouri added a run in the top of the third but Pierce responded with a double and scored on a Ware single to make it 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Missouri then played small ball in the fourth to get their fifth run of the game. They led the inning off with a bunt single, advanced on a ground out and scored on a two-out double.

The home Tigers quickly responded when [autotag]Nate LaRue[/autotag] led the home half of the inning off with a solo home run to make it 5-4. Both pitching staffs settled in after that, Auburn reliever [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag] retired the next 10 batters he saw before allowing a single and then a home run in the eighth.

The lefty allowed two runs in 3.2 innings of work and struck out three and gave his offense a chance to get back in the game.

“I just wanted to go out there and fill up the zone and give my offense a chance to get back in this game, which obviously they did,” Bauman said. “Coming back on a short day’s rest, I wanted to keep it easy, let my defense work, which is what I try to do, and it ended up working out pretty well.”

[autotag]Will Cannon[/autotag] entered in the eighth and the only runner he allowed was one he hit. He struck out one batter as he earned the win.

Auburn has not lost an SEC game since May 5 and is set to open its SEC Tournament run on Tuesday against Missouri.

Auburn baseball holds off LSU to even series

A strong middle-inning effort was enough for Auburn to knock off the No. 1 team on Saturday night.

Auburn had no answer for LSU ace Paul Skenes in Friday night’s opener with No. 1 LSU and fell 3-0.

In game two of the series, the eagle flew well, which paved the way for the Tigers to also play well.

Auburn used patience and clutch hitting in the middle innings of Saturday’s middle game of the series with the Bayou Bengals to earn the 8-6 victory to even the series.

“We competed,” Auburn coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said Saturday. “It was going to take a competitive spirit. Our crowd is creating an SEC environment that’s absolutely a factor in a ballgame.”

LSU began the game by jumping out to a 2-0 lead through the first three innings of the game. LSU’s Hayden Travinski and Tommy White each recorded an RBI single in the 2nd and 3rd inning respectively.

A trio of walks in the 4th inning put Auburn on the board. LSU pitcher Ty Floyd walked [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] and [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag] to tie the game, and a third walk to [autotag]Nate LaRue[/autotag] by Gavin Guidry put Auburn ahead, 3-2.

Cade Beloso put LSU back in front with a two-RBI single in the top of the 5th inning, 4-3. Auburn then delivered its’ biggest punch in the 6th inning with three singles and a sacrifice fly to jump ahead for the second time in the game, 7-4.

Each team traded solo home runs in the 7th inning, with LSU’s Jordan Thompson scoring the final run of the game on a fielder’s choice in the 8th inning.

To close the game, [autotag]Will Cannon[/autotag] struck out three batters to solidify the 8-6 win and earned a three-inning save.

“The adrenaline was kicking,” Cannon said. “Facing the No. 1 team in the country, I definitely wanted it. Coach Thompson’s belief in me and the entire team is unreal. I thank him every day for that.”

In his return from injury, [autotag]Zach Crotchfelt[/autotag] earned the win on the mound in relief by striking out the only batter he faced in the 6th inning. Starter [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] had another successful start by allowing just one earned run and six hits in 4.0 innings of work, striking out eight batters.

Auburn goes for the series win on Sunday. First pitch between Auburn and LSU is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

Auburn halts late rally to defeat South Alabama

Kason Howell’s three-hit, four RBI performance helps Auburn erase a three-game losing streak.

After suffering a three-game sweep to No. 3 Arkansas to open the SEC slate, Auburn needed to find confidence ahead of this weekend’s series with rival Georgia.

On Tuesday, they found it.

Auburn gained comfort by scoring five runs in the middle innings to help them hold off a comeback attempt by South Alabama and ultimately earn the 6-5 win over the Jaguars at Riverwalk Stadium in downtown Montgomery.

The Tigers and Jaguars battled to a scoreless tie through 2 1/2 innings before [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] put his squad on the board, 3-0,  with a three-run blast to left field that scored [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] and [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag]. Howell would also contribute to his team’s lead again in the 4th inning on an RBI single.

“I’m kind of simplifying things and just trying to get a good pitch to hit, be on time and let the results take care of themself,” Howell said following Auburn’s win over South Alabama. “That’s really where I’m at right now and it’s working out. Hopefully, I can just be consistent with it and keep it going.”

Wright scored Auburn’s other run in the 4th inning on an RBI single that scored Justin Kirby to put the Tigers ahead, 4-0.

The game would then hit another lull before South Alabama’s Colson Lawrence hit his first of two home runs of the game in the top of the 7th inning. His first smack was a two-run blast that cut into Auburn’s lead, 5-2.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when a foul out by [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] was deep enough to score Howell from third base, making the game, 6-2.

Auburn found themselves in trouble in the 8th inning, as the Jaguars attempted to take a late lead with two outs. Lawrence repeated his 7th-inning performance by hitting yet another two-run blast, and Cole Ketzner crushed a solo shot in the next at-bat to trim Auburn’s lead to 6-5.

[autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] was able to slam the door on South Alabama by sitting down the Jaguars in order to close the game and solidify the win.

Howell paced the Tigers with three hits and four RBI, while Kirby and Wright each recorded multiple hits. Starter [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] got the win for Auburn by striking out two batters and allowing a hit in 4.0 innings of work. Isbell earned the save by tossing a perfect 9th inning.

Auburn improves to 14-6-1, and will now shift their focus to the Georgia Bulldogs, who come into town for a three-game series beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park. The Bulldogs defeated Georgia State on Tuesday night, 8-3, behind a three-hit night by center fielder Ben Anderson.

Extra inning walk off seals comeback win for Auburn baseball

Auburn stormed back to win Tuesday’s game over Georgia Tech in 12 innings after trailing 7-0 in the 3rd inning.

Auburn baseball proved Tuesday night what it has proven all season long… they refuse to quit.

After trailing 7-0 to Georgia Tech heading into their half of the 3rd inning in Tuesday’s contest, the Tigers outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-4 over the ensuing 9.5 innings to walk off with a 12-11 win at Plainsman Park.

The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie Georgia Tech, 11-11, with the score remaining that way until the bottom of the 12th inning with two down. Auburn’s [autotag]Justin Kirby[/autotag] led off the inning by reaching base on a walk and was sent home by an unlikely hero in [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag]. The transfer from West Georgia who pinch hit for [autotag]Josh Hall[/autotag] in the inning earned his “welcome to Auburn” moment by delivering a single to right field to score Kirby from 2nd base to seal the win.

“I took one pitch to kind of just get a feel because I had been over on the sideline for a while, but I was looking for something middle-away and got a fastball on the outer half,” Wortham said of his game-winning hit. “As soon as it hit the bat, I knew it was through and I knew Kirby was scoring, no doubt.”

The walk-off win was Auburn’s second of the season, the first coming against Lipscomb on March 4, which coincidentally was also a 12-11 win by Auburn. The win ahead of a crucial SEC-opening series at Arkansas speaks volumes to the Tigers’ identity.

“It speaks to how resilient our offense is. Honestly, even our pitching staff,” Kirby said of Auburn’s comeback win. “The last four or five innings we got some really big zeros, and that was huge. It just speaks to how resilient this team is. We have a lot of fight, and you can’t really teach that.”

The marathon game ended with 23 total runs, 42 hits, and it took 4 hours and 33 minutes to complete. Seven Tigers recorded multiple hits, and Kirby led the way with four. Kirby also led the team in RBI with three while Josh Hall and Gavin Miller added two to the total.

Auburn will now focus on Fayetteville, Arkansas, where they will travel for their first SEC series of the season. Game one between Auburn and Arkansas is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Auburn Baseball earns first fall win thanks to epic comeback

Auburn scored six runs in the final frame to defeat Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Plainsman Park

Fresh off of their second trip to the College World Series in three tries, Auburn Baseball is picking up where they left off.

The Tigers hosted Louisiana Tech for a fall exhibition game on Saturday and needed an epic comeback to finish off the Bulldogs. Newcomer [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag] hit the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning to cap the six-run comeback, which ultimately lifted Auburn to a 12-11 win.

The home run was the second hit of the day for Wortham, who doubled in two runs earlier in the inning to begin the comeback.

Pitching was key in overcoming the deficit as well. Auburn relievers [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag], [autotag]John Armstrong[/autotag], [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] did not allow a single Bulldog to reach base over the final five frames. Vail struck out all three batters faced in his one inning of relief work.

Joining Wortham in collecting two hits on the day were [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag], [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag], and [autotag]Gavin Miller[/autotag].

Auburn’s next fall exhibition game will take place on Friday, Oct. 18, when they welcome archrival Alabama, led by former [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] assistant Brad Bohannon, to Plainsman Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Watch: Future Auburn Tiger Brody Wortham has hilarious walk-up routine

This is one way to stay loose at the plate.

[autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag] has yet to play a game for the Auburn baseball team, but fans should get to know the future Tiger.

Not only did he lead the West Georgia Wolves with a .372 batting average and a 36-game hitting streak, but he also knows how to get the crowd going. That was on full display when he went up to bat for the Savannah Bananas on Saturday.

Wortham walked up to the song “Neon Moon” by Brooks & Dunn. The song, which was released in 1991, has become a popular dance challenge on TikTok. Wortham did not disappoint with his rendition, performing the dance as he walked up.

He may have been having fun but showed he can still compete, hitting a double on the first pitch of the at-bat. While I doubt he will have the same walk-up routine as a Tiger next season, he will be a player to keep an eye for his production and personality.
