Brian Shaw ‘happy’ to see Julius Randle, others make All-Star Game

The former NBA coach was happy to see several players earn first-time All-Star selections when the reserves were unveiled this week.

Former NBA head coach Brian Shaw on Wednesday expressed his happiness to see several players earn first-time All-Star selections this week when the full rosters were unveiled for the annual showcase game.

Shaw, who is now coaching the NBA G League Ignite, singled out players like Zach LaVine, Jaylen Brown and Julius Randle, who he coached for two seasons as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, for making the All-Star Game, which will be played on March 7 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Zion Williamson also earned his first All-Star selection this year.

“I was happy for some of the first time All-Stars in Zach LaVine, Julius Randle,” Shaw said. “He was a player that I coached in L.A. He has gotten better and better every year. I thought that maybe Damian Lillard should have gotten a starting nod. (I’m also happy for) Jaylen Brown, a guy that played at Cal, who I’m familiar with in the Bay area. For him to get an All-Star nod, I thought that maybe he should have gotten one last year.”

The NBA on Tuesday unveiled the seven reserve players from each conference to make the All-Star Game. Of course, the announcement of the reserve players each year sparks the conversation on which individuals were snubbed, and this year proved to be no different.

Players like Devin Booker, Trae Young, Bam Adebayo and Mike Conley Jr. were among those not named to the initial roster. However, Booker has since been selected by NBA commissioner Adam Silver as an injury replacement for Anthony Davis.

Shaw offered one way to solve the problem of snubbing players from the game.

“In those situations, it’s tough to pick,” Shaw said. “I think that everybody that made it was deserving. It’s hard to see Devin Booker getting left off. I think that maybe one thing that they ought to do is maybe expand the All-Star roster because there are so many guys that are deserving. If you can have 15 guys on an NBA roster, then there should be 15 guys on the All-Star roster as well.”

For years now, the 30 NBA coaches, who are tasked with selecting the reserve players, have long begged to have the All-Star rosters expanded from 12 to 14 or 15 spots. Each year, there is seemingly always at least one deserving player or two left out of the game, but coaches try to make the judgment based on their research.

In the end, though, there will always be at least one player left out.

“There have been times I didn’t vote for a guy and after the fact, I felt like I wish there were more slots so I could vote for him,” Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams said. “That affects their livelihood. It affects their bonuses. It affects their standing. It affects their legacy. As a former player, I understand that. I want to be as fair as I can.”

Brian Shaw praised Jalen Green’s work ethic with NBA G League Ignite

The Ignite head coach believes Green has a chance to be special at the next level given his skill set and work ethic.

The newly-formed NBA G League Ignite only began training at the end of August but five-star prospect Jalen Green has already made quite an impression on head coach Brian Shaw.

Green, the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2020, signed with the Ignite, which was previously informally named the Select Team, in April. The NBA G League launched the program to serve as an alternative path for elite prospects wanting to play professionally and tapped Green as the face of the inaugural season.

The 18-year-old possesses a high-level blend of leaping ability and quickness on offense and thrives in isolation situations. He took home tournament MVP honors during the U17 World Cup in 2018, leading the United States to the gold medal averaging 15.7 points per game. Green is projected to be a top-five pick next year based on his potential.

Certainly, Green has the makings of being the next star player but, perhaps most important, he has shown a willingness to develop and train each day. Shaw praised Green for his work ethic and attitude during a recent interview with Marc Spears of The Undefeated.

He comes every day with that attitude that I’ve seen in some of the special young players that I’ve coached that get it right away. It’s like they don’t want to just make it to the league. They want to impact the team and make a place for themselves and be special. So, he’s always wanting to work.

I had to tell him [once] after I cut practice a little short … He said, ‘Coach, I want to be great.’ And I said, ‘You will be great. You keep that attitude but you also have to let your body rest sometimes and recover.’ He has that NBA bounce. … He has that ‘it’ factor that when you see it you say, ‘OK, I’m keeping an eye on this guy because he has a chance to be really special.’

The goal of Ignite is to provide the prospects with the necessary training and knowledge of the game to thrive at the next level and it appears as though that has been well received by the players. The team will eventually be filled with veteran players that will also help mentor the prospects.

Ignite, which is unaffiliated with any existing NBA G League franchise or NBA team, will participate in exhibition games against other NBA G League teams and international clubs and will play 10-12 games that won’t count against the standings.

Brian Shaw to be named head coach of the NBA G League Select Team

The former NBA head coach was reportedly among the candidates considered for the position given his past coaching experience.

Former NBA coach Brian Shaw has reportedly agreed to become the head coach of the NBA G League Select Team, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Shaw was reportedly among the candidates considered for the position given his past coaching experience in the NBA. He spent eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Lakers prior to becoming the head coach of the Denver Nuggets in 2013 for two seasons.

He last served as an associate head coach with Lakers from 2016-2019.

Shaw will be in charge of helping develop players in the professional pathway program, headlined by five-star prospects Jalen Green, Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix. The program was unveiled in April as an alternate pathway for prospects wanting to play professionally.

Under the structure of the new program, prospects will be placed on a team filled with veteran players and experienced coaches to provide mentorship. They will participate in training and exhibition games and will play around 10-12 games against existing G League teams.

According to a previous report, former NBA head coach Sam Mitchell was set to take control of the G League Select Team but that deal could not be completed, based on the latest news to surface on Monday. Mitchell was a former NBA Coach of the Year winner with the Toronto Raptors.

In addition to the trio of five-star prospects set to join the G League Select Team, four-star prospect Kai Sotti will also participate in the program, the first international player to join. Sotto, a 7-foot-2 center from the Philippines, has spent the past year at The Skills Factory in Georgia.

Two teams headed in opposite directions will meet late Saturday afternoon in California as 4-7 Stanford plays host to No. 16 Notre Dame.

A win would give Notre Dame their third straight 10-win season, something they haven’t accomplished three seasons in a row since between 1991 and 1993.
