Brian Scalabrine on the Celtics’ title prospects on the ‘Dan Patrick Show’

Scal recently made an appearance on the “Dan Patrick” show to talk all things Boston in the postseason.

When it comes to the Boston Celtics franchise, very few can claim to know the organization like Brian Scalabrine. White Mamba — as he was affectionately known as a player — won a title with the storied club in 2008. He transitioned to calling games and providing analysis for the team he once played for.

Scal recently made an appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show” to talk all things Boston in the postseason, what it needs to do to hang the long-elusive Banner 18, the bad habits that might stop that from happening and much more.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what the USC alumnus had to say about the title prospects of the team he once won it all with.

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce claim Brian Scalabrine used to be a nasty one-on-one player

Astute fans of Scal can recall when he played some fans who did not expect to get their posteriors handed to them.

It might surprise some younger fans of the Boston Celtics to learn present-day Celtics broadcaster Brian “White Mamba” Scalabrine used to be a pretty nasty 1-on-1 player on the court. At least, that is what his former teammates on the Banner 17 squad from 2008 say.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Showtime Basketball “KG Certified” podcast, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett shared their recollections of the onetime USC star’s mano a mano game back in the day in a short put together to laud White Mamba’s skills.

If you to want to see evidence with your own eyes, take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what the Ticket and the Truth have to say about playing White Mamba one-on-one.

Brian Scalabrine reveals his craziest teammates on the Boston Celtics

With names like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Scott Pollard, and Glen Davis in the mix, you don’t want to miss his response.

The 2007-08 Boston Celtics were not just a championship club but also a collection of unique and intense personalities. Current Boston broadcaster and former Celtics player Brian Scalabrine was there to witness it all, frequently drawing on his time playing with Boston in that era for fodder in his media appearances.

On a recent guest spot on the “Dan LeBatard” show, White Mamba (as Scal is sometimes called) opened up about his craziest teammates from the Banner 17 crew, and the USC alum did not disappoint. Not only did he have a list in mind, but he also had two — one for “good” crazy, the other for “bad” crazy.

With names like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Scott Pollard and Glen Davis in the mix, you don’t want to miss his response.

Brian Scalabrine on the Boston Celtics legendary Banner 17 arm wrestling competition

Check out this snapshot of Boston Celtics history.

Back in the day when current Boston Celtics broadcaster Brian Scalabrine was a member of the team he now covers’ roster, White Mamba (as Scal was known in those days) soaked up plenty of crazy stories with the team he would win a title as a member of in 2008.

The USC alum bore witness to the colorful personalities of his Banner 17 teammates as they worked towards the common goal of all Boston teams, hanging more banners to burnish the already storied legacy of the Celtics in the NBA. Fast forward to today and Scal has become quite the storyteller of that era of Boston basketball lore.

In a recent interview with the “Dan LeBatard” show, Scalabrine sat down and told some of his best stories from that moment in time, most notably the arm wrestling tale that took place on the team plane.

Take a look at the clip embedded above for a snapshot of Boston Celtics history.

On this day: Brian Scalabrine born, Boston snaps Rockets’ 22-game streak

On this day in Celtics history, Brian Scalabrine and two other Celtics were born, and Boston snapped Houston’s 22-game winning streak.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, a trio of former Celtics were born. The first of the trio, March 18th is the birthday of fan-favorite big man Brian Scalabrine, who played for the Celtics for five seasons between 2005 and 2010 and came into this world in 1978 in Long Beach, California.

A product of the University of Southern California, White Mamba — as he is sometimes called — was drafted in the second round of the 2001 NBA draft 35th overall by the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets. Scalabrine would sign a five-year deal with the Celtics in 2005, where he would win a championship with the Banner 17 crew in 2008.

He would average 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds per game with Boston.

White Mamba story time with Boston Celtics alum Brian Scalabrine

Scal tells his tales of Kevin Garnett and the fabled arm wrestling contest, his infamously illogical confidence as an NBA player, and who had the edge when the team played pickup games.

While his role with the Boston Celtics during his time as a player was never a large one, former Boston big man and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine bore witness to all things Banner 17 during his time with the Celtics, and has a treasure trove of stories to tell from that era as a result.

The White Mamba — as he is affectionately known by as a nickname — recently stopped by the eponymously hosted “Dan LeBatard” show to tell his tales of Kevin Garnett and the fabled arm wrestling contest, his infamously illogical confidence as an NBA player, and who had the edge when the team played pickup games.

Take a look at the clip we have embedded below to hear all this and plenty more of Scal’s time with the team during their last era of title contention.

Celtics ball boy Octavio Cruz earns first civilian Tommy Point with hustle off court

The speed with which Cruz got out of the way of a fastbreak impressed fans, players, and broadcasters alike.

It is an extraordinary occasion to win a Tommy Point from the NBC Sports Boston broadcast crew, but a non-player getting one happened for the first time in Wednesday night’s blowout of the Brooklyn Nets.

Ball boy Octavio Cruz went to dry the floor after play shifted to the other end of the court only to have the action swing back to his side of the hardwood in a blink, forcing Cruz to scramble off of the court with a gusto that caught the eye of everyone watching the game, particularly the Celtics bench and broadcast crew.

“Honestly, he should sign up for the NFL combine,” said Boston’s Grant Williams via NBC Sports Boston, impressed with Ocho’s (Cruz’ nickname) speed.

“The way he moves, the way his body moves. Really just the explosiveness that he plays with, his pursuit speed,” he added. “I’ve never seen (a) change of direction like that.”

“I’ve played basketball with him,” said NBC Sports broadcaster and former Celtics forward Brian Scalabrine as he bestowed a Tommy Point on Cruz — the first civilian so honored.

“Big-time hooper. I’m not kidding. I prefer to play with him. I would pick him over a lot of NBA players. He can really pass it. The NBA guys, not so much.”

Celtics alum Brian Scalabrine is all in on trading for Jakob Poeltl

Does it make sense for the Celtics to meet the likely significant ask the Austrian center will likely demand? To Scal, yes.

Has the recent losing streak of the Boston Celtics made you feel any different about the importance of adding some more capable depth to the team? After all of our attention was piqued by reports that the Celtics had been sniffing around the San Antonio Spurs regarding the availability for a trade of big man Jakob Poeltl, it was then shot down with word such a move was unlikely to go down.

But with Boston continuing to struggle against lesser but longer ball clubs and plenty of minutes put on the legs of the team’s aging or oft-injured frontcourt players, that calculus might be beginning to change, and you can count former Celtics champ Brian Scalabrine as among those who want to see Boston go for Poeltl.

Does it make sense for the Celtics to meet the likely significant ask the Austrian center will likely demand?

On this day: Brian Scalabrine makes NBA debut; 2nd lowest point total

On this day in 2001, future Celtic champion Brian Scalabrine made his NBA debut, and Boston played a game it would like to forget.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Boston big man (and now NBC Boston Sports broadcaster) Brian Scalabrine made his NBA debut back in 2001 — though not with the Celtics.

Scalabrine would play his collegiate basketball with the University of Southern California Trojans before being picked up with the 34th overall pick by the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets in the 2001 NBA draft, chalking up a pair of trips to the NBA Finals in his first two seasons in the league as a player. White Mamba — as he is sometimes called — would play four seasons with the Nets before leaving the team that drafted him.

He would leave to sign with the Celtics as an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2005-06 NBA season.

Brian Scalabrine on whether Jayson Tatum coud score 80 points in a game with the Boston Celtics

Scal also touched on last season’s chatter about splitting Tatum and teammate Jaylen Brown up in light of their play this season, and a bunch of other snapshots of NBA history.

Former Boston Celtics big man and current Celtics broadcaster Brian Scalabrine recently sat down with Landon Buford of “Inside The Suns” for an interview that touched on whether star Boston wing Jayson Tatum could score 80 points in a game amid the league’s offensive revolution.

The pair also touched on last season’s chatter about splitting Tatum and teammate Jaylen Brown in light of their play and a bunch of other snapshots of NBA history from the White Mamba’s time as a player and playing against the likes of Steve Nash.

To hear Scal’s tales of the league of yesteryear and what he thinks of the Celtics’ stars as Boston looks poised for another run at an NBA title this season, check out the clip embedded below courtesy of the Landon Buford YouTube channel.
