Navy’s Brian Newberry subtly roasted Army’s Jeff Monken after his overconfident Midshipmen trolling

Brian Newberry didn’t forget!

Navy coach Brian Newberry didn’t forget Army coach Jeff Monken’s October slight after his team upset Monken’s team on Saturday at West Point.

The Midshipmen’s 31-13 road win over the archrival Black Knights was a shock after the latter’s excellent season. It was even sweeter after what happened earlier in the fall on ESPN.

Back in October, Monken was so confident in his surging Army team that he trolled Navy on The Pat McAfee Show.

“Do they still have a football program at that school?” Monken joked during the McAfee segment about why he wasn’t worried about Navy this year.

Well, those words came back to haunt Monken as Newberry threw them right back after Navy’s stunning Army upset.

“I’ll tell you what, we still got a football team in Annapolis,” Newberry quipped during his postgame interview with CBS Sports’ Jenny Dell.

Talk about a callback for the ages. We love rivalries!

Navy head coach Brian Newberry has high praise for Notre Dame ahead of this weekends game

Newberry knows its going to be difficult to defeat the Irish

There is some considerable buildup to Notre Dame football’s contest this weekend against Navy.

Both teams are ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll, as it is one of many games across the country that features two top-25 teams. With said hype, Navy head coach [autotag]Brian Newberry[/autotag] joined ESPN to talk about Saturday afternoon’s matchup and gave the Irish some big-time praise.

He compared Notre Dame to an NFL team, saying that they look the part and are “super talented.” Newberry seems to know that from a skill standpoint, the Irish have a distinct advantage against his team.

Navy has yet to be challenged this year, as every single one of its wins this fall have been double-digit victories. The Irish suffered a loss during Week 2 against Northern Illinois, but has solid wins over currently ranked Texas A&M and previously ranked Louisville.

Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. EST, so we won’t have to wait long on Saturday to see the two teams getting after it.

Notre Dame football: Navy head coach evaluates Irish after 42-3 thrashing

What the only head coach to play against Notre Dame so far this season saw…

If it was a fight they would have stopped it.

Notre Dame did anything and everything they wanted to Navy on Saturday, thrashing the Midshipmen 42-3 and starting the 2023 season 1-0.

The game was the first as Navy’s head coach for Brian Newberry, who replaced Ken Niumatalolo this past off-season.  The game was obviously a thrashing but what did Newberry see in the Fighting Irish?

Here is what the new Navy head coach had to say about Notre Dame following the blowout victory and how he sees the Irish faring in 2023.

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Navy

Do you expected the one-sidedness of this rivalry to continue?

Notre Dame is facing longtime rival Navy in Ireland in Week 0 of the 2023 college football season. It only makes sense that we begin our series of football Saturdays with a matchup that goes back nearly a century with only one interruption. The people of the Emerald Isle will see this game on their turf for the third time, so they should know what to expect by now.

Let’s look at what some college football experts are predicting for this game:

Navy statistical leaders using 2022 statistics

Check out the Midshipmen’s best returning players.

Navy has a new coach at the helm in Brian Newberry. Normally, a new coach at a service academy would have a lot to learn about leading such a program. But Newberry previously was the Midshipmen’s defensive coordinator for four seasons. If he doesn’t know what the team is capable of by now, he’s in serious trouble.

When you take a look at some of the returning leaders for the Midshipmen, you’ll notice that some of the figures are not what you would expect from a typical college football program in 2023. It often looks more like something you’d see from the middle of the last century. Alas, these are players who have their eye on serving their country instead of playing in the NFL. They just happen to be the best football players the Naval Academy has to offer.

Statistically, here are the top returning players on this year’s team from 2022:
