2021 NFL draft: TE options for the Jets in the early, middle & late rounds

A look at three tight ends who could be options for the Jets throughout the NFL draft.

With the 2021 NFL draft now less than a month away, it’s time to dive deeper into Joe Douglas’ plans to upgrade the Jets roster with an influx of young talent.

New York is by no means in bad shape with Chris Herndon, Ryan Griffin, Trevon Wesco and free agent signing Tyler Kroft manning the tight end position. None of those players have staked their claim to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, though, meaning a rookie would have the chance to come in and make an instant impact.

Jets Wire will be taking a look at three realistic prospects at positions of need that the Jets could land, ranging from the early rounds to the later rounds. Let’s take a look at three tight ends who fit that mold.

Who did the Colts take in CBS Sports’ 7-round mock draft?

What do you think of this seven-round mock?

As the 2021 NFL draft approaches, now officially three weeks away, the Indianapolis Colts will be a team to watch. Given their history of finding gems throughout the draft, Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports ran a seven-round mock draft for Indy.

Without any trades going down, which is unlikely for Chris Ballard, the Colts found their new left tackle, an intriguing edge rusher a new pass-catching weapon that feel mightily.

Here’s how the mock draft went for the Colts:

Offseason options for the Cardinals at TE

There are many ways the Cardinals can “not panic” to fill their need at tight end.

The Arizona Cardinals still have a few glaring holes on the roster, though general Steve Keim has said they will not panic in terms of filling out the roster. One of those notable holes is at tight end. All they have on their roster is Maxx Williams, who dealt with an ankle injury all year, Darrell Daniels and Ian Bunting. Bunting has never played an NFL game.

There are many ways they can “not panic” to fill their need at tight end, even after re-signing Darrell Daniels to a one-year contract.

Here are a few routes they could take:

Cardinals GM Steve Keim visits Miami pro day in person

He gets an in-person look at pass-rushing prospects Gregory Rousseau and Jaelan Phillips and tight end Brevin Jordan.

The Arizona Cardinals continue to prepare for the NFL draft at the end of April and that means watching pro days. Cardinals general manager Steve Keim was at present himself for a recent pro day, presumably to get an in-person look at a couple of potential first-round pass rushers.

According to NFL Network’s Andrew Groover, Keim was one of a few general managers and head coaches who were expected to be at the pro day for the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami has two notable pass rushers in Jaelan Phillips and Gregory Rousseau who could both be selected in the first round of the draft.

Both players have been mocked to the Cardinals with the 16th overall picks at some point.

Rousseau did not play in 2020 but had 15.5 sacks in 2019. Phillips played one season for Miami after transferring from UCLA. He had eight sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss in eight games last season.

Another notable player for Miami who could draw interest from the Cardinals is tight end Brevin Jordan. Jordan’s production as a pass catcher increased every season. He had 38 receptions for 576 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games.

Keim does not attend all pro days, but Miami’s was big enough for him to o see in person. With that in mind, Phillips and Rousseau are names to know when it comes to the Cardinals’ first-round pick.

Cardinals land CB, TE in new two-round mock draft

The Arizona Cardinals land CB Jaycee Horn and TE Brevin Jordan in the latest NFL mock draft from Luke Easterling.

The latest trades made by the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles all change the dynamic of the first round of the NFL draft at the end of next month.

However, in a new mock draft from Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling, the changes at the top 10 don’t really change things for the Arizona Cardinals.

Even with the trades, the Arizona Cardinals still land a cornerback in the first round.

In Easterling’s mock draft, the Cardinals land cornerback Jaycee Horn out of South Carolina. Horn, the son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, is freakishly athletic. The numbers he put up at his pro day last week might make him go even higher than the Cardinals with the 16th overall pick.

He is a physical corner who fits what the Cardinals do defensively at the position.

In the second round, the Cardinals are projected to select Miami tight end Brevin Jordan. This fills a big need the Cardinals have. His pass-catching production increased each season at Miami. He had 38 catches for 576 yards and seven touchdowns in 2020. He is a willing blocker, although he can and should improve at it.

The Cardinals only have Maxx Williams and Darrell Daniels on the roster with any NFL experience. Jordan would add an interesting dynamic.

Mel Kiper gives thoughts on Jags’ need for a TE

The Jags have several needs, but Mel Kiper feels tight end is one of the top ones they need to address this year.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of needs after coming off a one-win season in 2020, and as a result, Urban Meyer and company will have a task on their hands when it comes to bolstering up the group to a respectable level. However, depending on what analyst fans get their information from, the team’s top needs vary, which has made trying to figure out the Jags’ direction interesting these last few months.

In a recent conference call, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. revealed one of the positions he felt was a top-3 need for the Jags, which is at tight end. Thankfully, Kiper feels there will be plenty of prospects to choose from, though, as the Jags have 11 picks in April’s draft.

“Yes, that is a need – and that is one of their top three needs overall,” Kiper said about the tight end position. […] “There will be a lot of tight ends. It depends on which ones they like. They’re all a little different, but they all certainly would be possibilities for Jacksonville in this draft.”

In addition to the draft picks they have, the Jags are projected to have a figure of over $80 million in available cap space. They could use that to sign a veteran like Jonnu Smith or Hunter Henry in a few weeks if they become available.

As for the draft, the top prospect is Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, who should be a top-10 selection. Of course, his ranking as an elite prospect would rule the Jags out unless they gave up significant compensation to move up.

What’s more likely is for the Jags to snag a tight end in Rounds 2-5. Pat Freiermuth is a popular name at the position who has a second-round grade. He also has ties to the Jags as his former position coach, Tyler Bowen, is on the staff. Other options include Brevin Jordan, Tre’ McKitty, and Hunter Long, who the Jags could snag in Days 2-3.

Regardless of what route the Jags go, it’s hard to see them not addressing their weakness at tight end as the position has proven to be important for quarterbacks. By addressing it this year, the team would be bringing in the tight end at the same time as probable No. 1 selection Trevor Lawrence, giving him a weapon at the position to build a bond with immediately in his young career.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft: Edge rusher in free agency

How would the draft go if the Colts address EDGE in free agency?

The Indianapolis Colts are less than two months away from the 2021 NFL draft and while free agency will have an impact on how they go about their picks, it’s still wise to take a look at some of the options.

In this latest mock draft, we are undergoing a scenario in which the Colts add to the edge position in a big way during free agency. We will be running some exercises like this with other positions before free agency hits.

This mock has a little more of what I would do, differing from the typical mock drafts in which we try to predict what Chris Ballard will do.

Using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, here’s a look at our latest mock draft in which the Colts have addressed a big need at edge rusher in free agency:

Miami TE Brevin Jordan says Patriots are showing pre-draft interest

The Patriots are among the teams interested in Brevin Jordan.

Miami tight end Brevin Jordan listed the New England Patriots as one of the teams showing consistent interest ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, per The Draft Wire’s Justin Melo.

Jordan caught 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns. All three of those categories were numerical highs for him last season. Jordan would certainly add a dynamic playmaker to the tight end position. New England drafted two tight ends last year in Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene, but neither offered dynamic playmaking in 2020.

At six-foot-three, 245 pounds, Jordan is on the smaller side for a tight end. However, he would give New England a playmaking weapon.

He could be a value pick for New England in the second round or later. This is a scenario where they do not have to use a first-round selection to get a playmaker.

The Patriots have had issues getting production from the tight end position over the last two years. The 2021 depth chart will include Matt LaCosse, Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene and Ryan Izzo.

Packers showing pre-draft interest in Miami TE Brevin Jordan

The Green Bay Packers are showing notable pre-draft interest in one of the best receiving tight ends in the 2021 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers are showing notable pre-draft interest in one of the best receiving tight ends in the 2021 NFL draft.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Packers are one of several teams that have been in consistent communication with Miami tight end Brevin Jordan, a three-time All-ACC selection and a two-time semi-finalist for the Mackey Award.

The Packers, who drafted tight ends Jace Sternberger and Josiah Deguara in the third round of the last two drafts, could see Jordan as another athletic, versatile tight end who could be a mismatch-type weapon in the passing game.

Over three seasons at Miami, Jordan caught 105 passes for 1,358 yards and 13 touchdowns. He set career-highs with 38 catches for 576 yards and seven touchdowns in 2020.

The Draft Network considers Jordan to be a “dynamic weapon” and “dangerous” receiver that played “all over the formation” at Miami and is a “competitive blocker,” giving him the ideal profile of the “F tight end” that Matt LaFleur likes to use so often in his offense.

Jordan was an all-conference pick during all three of his seasons at Miami. He was a semifinalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, during each of his final two seasons, including 2020.

The Packers are deep at tight end, but Robert Tonyan is a restricted free agent and could be in danger of leaving if a team is willing to part with a draft pick to sign him, based on the tender he eventually receives from the Packers.
