‘Canelo’ Alvarez: Jorge Masvidal matchup good business, but not challenging

Boxing superstar “Canelo” Alvarez says a matchup with UFC standout Jorge Masvidal doesn’t really interest him.

“Canelo” Alvarez doesn’t seem all that interested in a potential crossover fight with the UFC star [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag].

The multiple-weight boxing champion recently responded to Masvidal’s comments showing interest in a boxing bout between the two. “Canelo” believes Masvidal (35–13 MMA, 12-6 UFC), a top contender in the UFC’s welterweight division, has no business competing in the sport of boxing.

“I say this with all respect: If I go into his sport, I have nothing to do there. And I think the same about boxin: If (MMA fighters) come into boxing, they have nothing to do here,” Alvarez told Little Giant Boxing. “But looking at it from a business standpoint, it is attractive, but it’s not a challenge for me, so it’s not my priority.”

The biggest crossover bout between boxing and MMA fighters, and one of the biggest fights in combat sports history, was in 2017 when the undefeated Floyd Mayweather beat former UFC featherweight and lightweight champ Conor McGregor in a boxing match.

Since then, the number of callouts involving MMA and boxing fighters has grown. Alvarez believes there is a simple answer to that: money.

“Because of money – because of the business and nothing else,” Alvarez said. “That’s the reality, because what else? They would’ve started boxing from the beginning if they really liked boxing. And I say this will all due respect, each to their own: I respect what they do and their sport, and they’re great fighters in what they do. But in boxing, well, it’s just something else.”

‘Rampage’ Jackson wants a boxing match before he retires – against anybody but Deontay Wilder

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson wants to compete in a boxing match before he retires against anyone but Deontay Wilder.

[autotag]Quinton Jackson[/autotag] wants to lace up the boxing gloves at least once before calling it quits.

“Rampage” recently told TMZ Sports he’d be willing to box anyone except one man.

“I’ll fight anybody but Deontay Wilder – he’s too tall,” Jackson said. “Unless they’re giving me $100 million, I’ll fight him. I ain’t going to lie – I keep it real. I don’t like fighting tall guys with long reach. I tell you what, I’ll fight him if they give me $100 million, and we do one boxing match and one MMA match, I’ll fight him – $100 million.

“I’m keeping it real, I don’t like fighting long, tall dudes. I’ve got to take them down.”

Jackson (38-13 MMA, 5-2 BMMA), who is scheduled to face Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator Japan next month, said he’s wanted to compete in a boxing match a long time before it became a popular thing for MMA fighters to do.

“I asked (UFC president) Dana White a long time ago, way before Conor McGregor even was around: ‘Let me do some boxing,'” Jackson said. “It wasn’t my time. There was nobody for me to fight. I still want to fight a boxing match before I retire. I’m fighting Dec. 29 in Japan. I still fight – I haven’t retired yet.”

Cindy Dandois left with broken nose and ‘a scar for life’ after alleged attack by ex-boyfriend

Belgian women’s MMA pioneer Cindy Dandois was left with a broken nose and seven stitches after an alleged attack by her former partner.

[autotag]Cindy Dandois[/autotag], a former UFC, Bellator and Invicta fighter, was hospitalized Friday after an alleged attack by an ex-boyfriend.

Reports from Belgium said that Dandois, 35, was attacked by her former partner outside her home in Deurne, Antwerp, with the Belgian fighter explaining after the incident that the attack was a result of a previous break-up between the pair.

“An ex of mine couldn’t believe we were apart and I just wanted to go through life as friends,” she told Het Laatste Niews (via translation). “Jealousy, then. He had been threatening me for a while, but I didn’t take those threats seriously – until he stood at my door.”

Reports said the alleged assailant waited in hiding for Dandois and attacked her by surprise, using a key as a weapon and leaving Dandois with facial injuries including a broken nose and laceration across her nose and face that required seven stitches.

“I was not prepared for the attack at all,” Dandois told the news outlet. “Before I knew it, I got slapped in the face. My nose is broken and crooked. There is also a deep cut that was stitched with seven stitches. It will be a scar for life. Hopefully, they will be able to straighten my nose again. I should have taken the threats seriously from the beginning, but always hoped that he would cool down. Not so. ”

Dandois said her MMA training helped her to avoid receiving even worse injuries, but the Belgian, who works as a teacher, maintained that the skills she learned in the gym should not be used on the street, other than for self defense.

“I don’t like fighting outside the ring. I am not a street fighter,” she said. “And if you don’t see an attack coming, it’s hard to avert it completely. I defended myself, of course, to prevent worse.”

The incident and subsequent injuries mean that Dandois had to pull out of her scheduled fight at Fightclub Den Haag this week. But despite her injuries, the veteran martial artist said he was optimistic she would be ready to return to the promotion’s next event on Dec. 15.

“I hope to be restored in time for the next fight,” she said. “I will be ready in three weeks.”

Rather than pressing charges against her attacker, Dandois reportedly lodged a police complaint, saying she simply wants him to cover the costs of her medical bills.

“I’d be very happy if he had to pay for the financial costs,” she said. “I don’t need to send him to prison. We are all people. We all make mistakes. I hope he sees them, pays for what he has done and picks up his life again. And leave me alone, of course … I am not a pathetic victim who cries in a corner. It’s tough, but I’m still here, fortunately. This could have ended differently.”

Ray Borg vs. Rogerio Bontorin set for UFC Rio Rancho in February

A bantamweight bout is the latest edition to the UFC’s February return to New Mexico.

A bantamweight bout is the latest edition to the UFC’s February return to New Mexico.

Former flyweight title challenger [autotag]Ray Borg[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) is set to take on [autotag]Rogerio Bontorin[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) when the UFC sets up shop in Rio Rancho, N.M., a person with knowledge of the booking told MMA Junkie. The person requested anonymity because the UFC hasn’t made a formal announcement. News of the fight first was reported on Twitter by Jorge Hernandez.

The UFC’s Rio Rancho event, likely to be a “Fight Night,” takes place Feb. 15 at Santa Ana Star Center. The card is likely to stream on ESPN+.

Borg got back in the win column in July with a unanimous decision victory over Gabriel Silva at UFC on ESPN 4. In February, he dropped a decision to Casey Kenney at UFC on ESPN 2 in a fight that saw him move up from flyweight to bantamweight – though he missed weight for the bout. That fight was his return after nearly 18 months away following his loss to then-flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson in a UFC 216 title fight.

Rogerio Bontorin

Bontorin earned his way into the UFC with a submission win over Gustavo Gabriel in a Dana White’s Contender Series fight in 2018. When he got his official promotional debut at UFC on ESPN+ 2 in February, he took a split call from Magomed Bibulatov. He followed that up in August with a first-round TKO of Raulian Paiva at UFC on ESPN+ 14.

Magomed Mustafaev vs. Brad Riddell added to UFC Auckland on Feb. 22

A lightweight bout between Magomed Mustafaev and Brad Riddell is the first addition to the UFC Auckland card.

A lightweight bout is the first addition to the UFC’s return to New Zealand.

[autotag]Magomed Mustafaev[/autotag] (15-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will take on [autotag]Brad Riddell[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC Auckland. The fight was first reported by journalist Igor Lazorin.

UFC Auckland takes place Feb. 22 (Sunday, Feb. 23 locally) at Spark Arena in Auckland. The card is likely to stream on ESPN+.

The New Zealand-born Riddell made good on his UFC debut in a “Fight of the Night” unanimous decision win against Jamie Mullarkey at UFC 243. The former kickboxer trains with the likes of UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and lightweight contender Dan Hooker at the City Kickboxing gym in Auckland.

Cody Garbrandt not buying ‘coward’ T.J. Dillashaw only on EPO for Henry Cejudo fight

Cody Garbrandt thinks fellow former UFC champ T.J. Dillashaw has been using banned substances for years, not just for his Henry Cejudo bout.

It’s safe to say [autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] is not buying anything that [autotag]T.J. Dillashaw[/autotag] is saying.

Dillashaw recently opened up about his failed drug test that stemmed from recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) found in an in-competition testing sample, claiming he only used a banned substance in his attempt to make 125 pounds when challenging UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

Garbrandt thinks fellow former 135-pound champ Dillashaw has been on EPO for years, including the two times they fought. Dillashaw knocked out Garbrandt in both outings.

Dillashaw claimed the strenuous cut down to 125 pounds rendered him weak and anemic, which is why he took the banned substance – a mistake he said he regrets. Despite that, Dillashaw suffered a TKO loss to Cejudo in just 32 seconds. After testing positive, he relinquished his bantamweight title. He is currently serving a two-year suspension, and will be eligible to return in January 2021.
