2021 PFL 6 results: Kayla Harrison cruises into playoffs with first round submission of Cindy Dandois

The main event of 2021 PFL 6 featured a bout in the women’s lightweight division between Kayla Harrison and Cindy Dandois.

[autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag]’s dominance in the PFL lightweight division continues.

With six points in the bag after her first-round stoppage of Mariana Moraes at 2021 PFL 3, Harrison (10-0) was in a great position to cruise into the playoffs. In fact, she clinched a playoff spot early in the evening as the prelims unfolded when Taylor Guardado defeated Laura Sanchez.

Entering the cage as a heavy favorite over Cindy Dandois, the two-time PFL champion found herself in a favorable matchup to earn more points in the standings.

Dandois (16-7) dropped her season opener to Kaitlin Young by unanimous decision and needed to pull off a major upset stoppage in order to make it through to the playoffs. Unfortunately, the odds were not in her favor.

2021 PFL 6 took place at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The main card aired on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

The fight did not stay standing for long. A few moments into the opening round, the fight ended up on the canvas where many believed the fight would eventually end up, given Harrison’s dominant grappling. While looking to land heavy punches on Dandois from guard, Harrison stayed patient and also focused on keeping dominant positions.

After returning to her feet briefly, Harrison closed back in and transitioned to full mount. With time running out in the opening round, Harrison searched for an armbar submission and was able to lock in the technique to force Dandois to tap out.

Harrison finishes the regular season with two finishes, earning 12 points, which secured the number two seed behind Larissa Pacheco.

“I’m so far ahead of all these girls,” Harrison said during her post-fight interview.

“This is the game of thrones and I’m gonna be the queen.”

Kayla Harrison to headline 2021 PFL 6; Fabricio Werdum to make second appearance

Reigning PFL champion Kayla Harrison will take on Bellator and UFC veteran Cindy Dandois in her next outing.

Reigning PFL champion [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag] will take on a Bellator and UFC veteran in her next outing.

On Tuesday, officials announced the lineup for the second round of 2021 regular-season bouts for women’s lightweights and heavyweights set for June 25 at 2021 PFL 6. In the main event, Harrison (9-0) faces [autotag]Cindy Dandois[/autotag] (16-6) at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J.

Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, made quick work of Mariana Morais at PFL 3, stopping her in the first round by TKO. Meanwhile on the same night, Dandois dropped her promotional debut when she dropped a unanimous decision to Kaitlin Young.

Former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Fabricio Werdum[/autotag] (24-9-1) will be in search of his first PFL win when he takes on Brandon Sayles on the main card. Originally a knockout loss, Werdum’s promotional debut at PFL 3 was overturned to a no contest after the commission reviewed the tape and concluded the referee missed Renan Ferreira tapping out to a Werdum triangle choke early in Round 1.

Earlier in the night, Sayles (6-1) had a standout performance when he upset Muhammad Usman with a second-round submission, notching his fourth consecutive win. He will look to score another upset against the far more experienced Werdum.

Cindy Dandois left with broken nose and ‘a scar for life’ after alleged attack by ex-boyfriend

Belgian women’s MMA pioneer Cindy Dandois was left with a broken nose and seven stitches after an alleged attack by her former partner.

[autotag]Cindy Dandois[/autotag], a former UFC, Bellator and Invicta fighter, was hospitalized Friday after an alleged attack by an ex-boyfriend.

Reports from Belgium said that Dandois, 35, was attacked by her former partner outside her home in Deurne, Antwerp, with the Belgian fighter explaining after the incident that the attack was a result of a previous break-up between the pair.

“An ex of mine couldn’t believe we were apart and I just wanted to go through life as friends,” she told Het Laatste Niews (via translation). “Jealousy, then. He had been threatening me for a while, but I didn’t take those threats seriously – until he stood at my door.”

Reports said the alleged assailant waited in hiding for Dandois and attacked her by surprise, using a key as a weapon and leaving Dandois with facial injuries including a broken nose and laceration across her nose and face that required seven stitches.

“I was not prepared for the attack at all,” Dandois told the news outlet. “Before I knew it, I got slapped in the face. My nose is broken and crooked. There is also a deep cut that was stitched with seven stitches. It will be a scar for life. Hopefully, they will be able to straighten my nose again. I should have taken the threats seriously from the beginning, but always hoped that he would cool down. Not so. ”

Dandois said her MMA training helped her to avoid receiving even worse injuries, but the Belgian, who works as a teacher, maintained that the skills she learned in the gym should not be used on the street, other than for self defense.

“I don’t like fighting outside the ring. I am not a street fighter,” she said. “And if you don’t see an attack coming, it’s hard to avert it completely. I defended myself, of course, to prevent worse.”

The incident and subsequent injuries mean that Dandois had to pull out of her scheduled fight at Fightclub Den Haag this week. But despite her injuries, the veteran martial artist said he was optimistic she would be ready to return to the promotion’s next event on Dec. 15.

“I hope to be restored in time for the next fight,” she said. “I will be ready in three weeks.”

Rather than pressing charges against her attacker, Dandois reportedly lodged a police complaint, saying she simply wants him to cover the costs of her medical bills.

“I’d be very happy if he had to pay for the financial costs,” she said. “I don’t need to send him to prison. We are all people. We all make mistakes. I hope he sees them, pays for what he has done and picks up his life again. And leave me alone, of course … I am not a pathetic victim who cries in a corner. It’s tough, but I’m still here, fortunately. This could have ended differently.”
