Notre Dame has easy victory over Maryland Eastern Shore

That was domination.

Notre Dame won’t be playing many games this season that are nearly this easy. But opponents like Maryland Eastern Shore should provide the young Irish opportunities to really show off what they can do when they’re at their best. Those chances came early and often in a 75-55 victory.

Although the Irish (3-2) trailed the Hawks (2-3) during the first couple of minutes, that was as treacherous as it got. Once they went ahead by double digits in the first half, they didn’t look back.

The Irish led by as much as 28 late in the second half, allowing [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] to empty his bench. That led to late 3-pointers from [autotag]Tony Sanders Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Thomas Hattan[/autotag], much to the delight of the rotational players on the sidelines.

[autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] scored all of his team-high 13 points in the first half with 12 of them coming on a game-high four 3-pointers. [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] scored 12 of his own points, making it five games of scoring in double figures to start his career. He also led the Irish with six rebounds and five assists.

Kebba Njie has seven points and four boards in his first game for the Irish after missing the first four with a hand injury.

Notre Dame shoots poorly in loss to Auburn

Man, was that ugly.

Despite the poor prognosis for its season, Notre Dame was one of four teams invited to the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. The Irish drew Auburn as their first opponent, and their next one depended on how they did in that first game. The answer to that question is not great as the Tigers dominated the Irish, 83-59. That means the Irish will face Oklahoma State, another first-time opponent, in the consolation game.

The Irish (1-2) never led in the contest but cut a 15-point deficit down to six before halftime. But the Tigers (2-1) went for the kill out of the break and succeeded with a 15-1 run to begin the second half. The deficit never got smaller than 16 from there, and it didn’t help that the Irish shot only 33.9% from the field, including a paltry 2 of 26 from 3-point range.

Aden Holloway and Johni Broome led the Tigers with 15 points apiece. Jaylin Williams had 11 points, and 10 points apiece came from Chris Moore and Tre Donaldson.

[autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag] reached double figures in both scoring and rebounds for the first time in his career with 18 points and 11 boards, leading the Irish in both categories. [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag] scored a career-high 13 points, [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] scored 12 despite 4-of-20 shooting, and [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] added 10 points to go with three steals.

Photos from Notre Dame’s exhibition win over Hanover

The new-look Irish finally take the court.

Notre Dame’s season officially won’t begin for another week, but Irish fans got a taste of it Wednesday at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish dominated Hanover, a Division III school in the southeastern part of Indiana, in a 96-62 exhibition win. Hanover most likely didn’t expect to come out on top but surely was grateful for the opportunity to come to South Bend.

This was the first time fans saw the new-look Irish in action. Highly touted freshman and Mishawaka native [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] was the game’s high scorer with 18 points. Zionsville native [autotag]Logan Imes[/autotag] and [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag], son of new Irish coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], both had 14 points. [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag] and [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag], two of the few incumbents on the roster, scored 12 apiece.

Don’t let this game fool you. The Irish very much are a work in progress, and the growing pains will be evident throughout the season. For now though, enjoy the photos from the winning exhibition:

Brad Stevens’ son Brady commits to Notre Dame for 2024

Another future get for the Irish.

The [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] era at Notre Dame seems to be defined early by luring the offspring of established basketball minds. Shrewsberry’s son, Braeden and Calvin Booth’s son, Carey, will make their Irish debuts this coming season. Recently, Nazr Mohammed’s son, Sir, committed for 2024. Now, the Irish can add Brad Stevens’ son, Brady, to the mix in 2024 after the following Instagram post was made:

Not much seems to be known about the younger Stevens other than he plays for the high school in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He doesn’t even have a 247Sports profile, suggesting he was only lightly recruited if at all. However, Shrewsberry was an assistant for the elder Stevens with Butler and then, the Boston Celtics. That alone might have made Notre Dame the best college option for someone who clearly will be walking on.

While the 2023-24 Irish will struggle, there is hope that the 2024-25 Irish  will allow Shrewsberry to do more than try to patch something together with a makeshift roster. Do you have the patience for that? Well, you won’t have a choice regardless. After all, good things come to those who wait.

Notre Dame lands 2023 forward recruit Carey Booth

Finally, some size.

Notre Dame desperately has been searching for size with very little of it returning in 2023-24. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag], son of coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], committed to the Irish, but he merely was the latest entry on a long list of guards they’ve had lately. Finally, the program has a new forward in [autotag]Carey Booth[/autotag], who announced his own commitment to the Irish less than 24 hours after Shrewsberry.

Booth is a four-star recruit and fourth on the list of 2023 recruits in New Hampshire. At 6-foot-10, he fills the height left by [autotag]Nate Laszewski[/autotag] and likely the young forward role left by the transferred Ven-Allen Lubin. Depending on how the rest of the roster shapes up, he could be thrust into the spotlight immediately.

Like Braeden Shrewsberry, Booth appeared headed to Penn State. Instead, he also is taking his talents to South Bend so that he’ll play for Micah Shrewsberry after all. He also previously visited Marquette and California and received offers from 13 other Division I schools.

Look at Notre Dame’s current 2023-24 roster

Do you have confidence in this group as it stands?

There still is time for Notre Dame to add to its 2023-24 roster, but don’t count on a game-changer suddenly emerging onto campus. Barring an unforeseen circumstance, the players the Irish have now figure to make up the core. That’s not a strong vote of confidence for Irish fans, but remember that first-year coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] practically has to start from scratch after the program lost all of its rotation players to graduation and the transfer portal.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this is going to be a very bad season for the Irish. The few holdovers from [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag]’s tenure have played very little. While Shrewsberry was able to bring his 2023 Penn State recruiting class and one of his Nittany Lions starters from the 2022-23 season, that’s not a lot of college basketball experience coming in. He must be in one of, if not the least envious position in the country.

Hopefully, the day will come when Shrewsberry has built the Irish back into a winner. Until then, try and get behind these players who are just there to do their jobs and play basketball:

Notre Dame lands Zionsville combo guard recruit Logan Imes

Shrewsberry’s Penn State guys keep following him to South Bend.

Make that three 2023 recruiting class commits for Notre Dame in as many days. Also make three commits in as many days who were headed to Penn State but switched to the Irish, likely because of [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] leaving State College for South Bend. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] and [autotag]Carey Booth[/autotag] committed to the program earlier this week. Now, they are joined by Zionsville’s [autotag]Logan Imes[/autotag], who decommitted from the Nittany Lions shortly after the Irish hired Micah Shrewsberry:

Imes, a preseason pick for the Indiana Mr. Basketball honor that ultimately went to incoming Irish freshman [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag], is the latest in a series of guards to call South Bend their home. What he brings that others can’t comes from the fact that he’s a combo guard. That could be critical whenever Micah Shrewsberry needs flexibility in the backcourt, crowded as it’s appearing to be.

Imes played varsity all four years at Zionsville, averaging 12.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game. During that time, he also had offers from Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Creighton. The Irish surely have to be happy that the offers from the two ACC rivals never were seriously considered. Now, he’s all theirs.

Braeden Shrewsberry, Micah’s son, commits to Notre Dame

Gotta love family connections.

[autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] barely has his feet wet as Notre Dame coach, but he might just have obtained the easiest commit he will ever get in the job. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag], his son, committed to playing for his dad in South Bend. He made it official Monday:

With Shrewsberry‘s prep career having just finished, he will join the Irish immediately. That will be a welcome sign to a program simply looking for bodies to fill the roster for the upcoming season. Yes, he’s another guard, and the Irish are looking for size in the worst way, but the priority right now is filling out the roster.

247Sports ranks Shrewsberry sixth among Pennsylvania recruits in the 2023 recruiting class. In two years as a varsity player, he averaged 18.4 points, 5 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game. Before his dad left Penn State, it appeared he was heading there, but no more. He also received offers from Xavier, St. Joseph’s and George Washington.

As expected, Braeden Shrewsberry will follow father Micah to Notre Dame

Micah Shrewsberry announced who the first player to leave Penn State for Notre Dame will be.

Amid a flurry of Penn State basketball roster changes, this may be the most likely development that was expected. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] has reportedly asked to be released from his national letter of intent at Penn State and will instead play for Notre Dame. Shrewsberry’s father, [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], has been named the head coach of the Fighting Irish after two seasons in charge of the Penn State basketball program.

Micah Shrewsberry revealed the news during his introductory press conference at Notre Dame on Thursday. The news was hardly a surprise but is another blow to the Penn State basketball roster that has been shredded since the end of the NCAA Tournament run by the program.

The loss of Shrewsberry, at least for the moment, leaves Penn State with just three players on scholarship heading into next season. That leaves a lot of room for new head coach Mike Rhoades to start filling with the transfer portal.

It’s also worth noting that a number of VCU players coached by Rhoades entered the transfer portal on Thursday as well, and Penn State could see Rhoades welcome some to Happy Valley. The top player on that list may be Ace Baldwin, the A-10 player of the year last season. At the moment, there are seven players from VCU in the roster, and Penn State has 10 scholarship spots to fill. Don’t be surprised if there is a little VCU flavor on next year’s Penn State roster.

Crystal ball pick says former Penn State commit could follow Shrewsberry to Notre Dame

A crystal ball prediction yields ominous outcome for Penn State basketball

We probably should have seen something like this coming. Although nothing is officially a done deal by any stretch of the imagination, one recruiting analyst is calling for former Penn State commit [autotag]Carey Booth[/autotag] to end up at Notre Dame. And just as Booth was a big-time recruiting victory for [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] at Penn State, Shrewsberry could once again score a nice recruiting win involving Booth.

Booth is being predicted to end up at Notre Dame by 247Sports contributor Trevor Andershock. What makes this prediction so notable is Andershock’s perfect record in crystal ball predictions, as he is currently 44-for-44. So, on the surface, this does seem rather ominous for Penn State.

Booth committed to Penn State in August 2022 when Shrewsberry was still the head coach of the Nittany Lions. Booth, the son of former Penn State standout Calvin Booth, was the second highest-ranked recruit in the history of the Penn State basketball program.

Shortly after Shrewsberry left Penn State to become the new head coach at Notre Dame, Booth asked to be released from his national letter of intent so he could explore his opportunities once again. The four-star deciding to stick with Penn State seemed unlikely, and a move to Notre Dame would seem to be a likely scenario at this point in time.

Booth was the first of two players to ask for a release from his NLI since Shrewsberry’s departure for south Bend.  [autotag]Logan Imes[/autotag] is the most recent player to ask to be released from his NLI. The three-star Indiana native could also be on Notre Dame’s radar for Shrewsberry, although it is reported Imes could still end up at Penn State.

Penn State’s current roster for the 2023-24 season has five scholarship players at the moment. The class of 2023 has just one remaining player, for now, and it just so happens to be Shrewsberry’s son, [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag].

Penn State’s search for a new head coach to succeed Shrewsberry. Whoever is named the head coach will have a lot of work to do in filling out the roster for next season.
