Brady Tygart named Freshman All-American…again

Arkansas’ freshman closer is one of the best in the nation, regardless of age.

Last week, Arkansas freshman pitcher Brady Tygart was honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as a Freshman All-American.

Now he has a second such honor.

Tygart was one of three relievers named to the Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-American team on Monday. He’s held opponents to a .212 batting average over his 37 1/3 innings while striking out 51.

Tygart joined freshman lefty Hagen Smith on the CBN Freshman All-American team last week, marking the sixth straight year the Razorbacks have had a first-year player named to such a team.

The Razorbacks continue their season on the weekend with a first-round game in the College World Series against No. 2 Stanford with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Smith, Tygart named Freshman All-Americans

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper names Hagen Smith and Brady Tygart as Freshman All-Americans, the first since Connor Noland in 2019 to win the honor

Two keys to Arkansas Baseball’s success in 2022 have been recognized by the national media.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper recently released their picks for the best Freshman baseball players across the country, naming Arkansas’ [autotag]Hagen Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] Freshman All-Americans.

Smith, a freshman from Bullard, Texas, has appeared in 17 games this season with 14 starts. In 70.0 innings pitched this season, Smith has struck out 79 batters while walking just 42, and posting a 4.89 ERA.

Smith began the season as the Saturday starter during weekend series’, but has been used mostly out of the bullpen since May 14. Smith, who had not thrown over four innings in one outing since April 30 against Ole Miss, grabbed his first save of the season last Monday night at Oklahoma State in the Stillwater Regional championship game. Smith tossed two innings, striking out four batters and preserving the Arkansas lead, which led them to a victory.

Tygart has been a force out of the bullpen all season. Known for his pitches using elusive movement, Tygart has recorded eight saves for the Razorbacks, with 51 strikeouts and a 3.93 ERA.

Tygart’s best outing of the season came against Ole Miss on May 1, where he struck out five batters on his way to a three-inning save.

According to Arkansas communications, Smith and Tygart are the 25th and 26th players in program history to earn Freshman All-America honors. They are the first Razorbacks pitchers to do so since [autotag]Connor Noland[/autotag] earned the recognition in 2019.

Razorbacks hang 20 in outstanding comeback win over Oklahoma State

The Hogs never gave up on Saturday night, and now they are one win away from moving onto the Super Regionals

In a game that lasted four hours and 53 minutes, every second of Saturday’s winner’s bracket game between Arkansas and Oklahoma State was just as exciting as it was important.

Through six innings of the game, Oklahoma State seemed to have complete control with a 10-5 lead. However, Arkansas would score 15 runs over the final three frames to grab a 20-12 win over the host Cowboys, and to move one step closer to the Super Regional round.

The Cowboys added to their comfortable lead in the bottom of the 6th inning by scoring three runs. Two on RBI singles, and one run scoring from third base on a ground out, to give them the 10-5 advantage.

Arkansas began chipping away in the top of the 7th inning. The Razorbacks began the inning with two quick outs, but a solo home run by [autotag]Michael Turner[/autotag] would keep Arkansas in the inning, trimming down the Oklahoma State lead to 10-6. That home run was enough to give the Razorbacks a spark, as [autotag]Chris Lanzilli[/autotag] would double in the next at-bat, then came home on a two-run home run by[autotag] Robert Moore[/autotag], cutting the Cowboy lead to 10-8.

Momentum stayed with Arkansas into the 8th inning, as the Razorbacks took the lead by scoring eight runs on three hits. The first three batters of the game reached, which set up four runs on three bases-loaded walks, and a hit by pitch.

Once Arkansas grabbed the lead, they would pour on four more runs with one swing of the bat. [autotag]Jalen Battles[/autotag] stepped to the plate, and with full confidence, smashed the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to blow the game open for Arkansas.

Oklahoma State grabbed two runs in the bottom of the 8th, but Arkansas never waivered. To add insurance, Arkansas added four more runs in the top of the 9th inning. With one down and two on, Lanzilli clubbed a three-run shot down the left field line.

The home run would be Lanzilli’s 50th of his career, and it would extend Arkansas’ lead to 19-12. The final run of the game came on an infield single by [autotag]Peyton Stovall[/autotag] that involved a throwing error, scoring Moore and to seal the game.

Five Razorbacks grabbed multiple hits in the game, with Chris Lanzilli, Robert Moore, Michael Turner, and Jalen Battles all sending four runs across the plate.

In a game that saw seven pitchers used, freshman [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] would get the win for Arkansas. Tygart allowed one hit and two earned runs in 1.2 innings of work. Starter [autotag]Hagen Smith[/autotag] went just 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs and issuing four walks in his first start since May 14 vs. Vanderbilt at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas is just one win away from winning the Stillwater Regional. The only thing standing in their way is the winner of Oklahoma State/Missouri State game that will begin at noon CDT. The Razorbacks will meet the winner of that game on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. CDT.

Update on status of Freshman pitcher Brady Tygart

Tygart did not suffer an injury as many feared in Friday’s game against Florida, according to a reliable source.

Arkansas fans were discouraged while watching the Razorbacks fall to Florida, 7-5 on Friday, a loss that would end their stay at the SEC Tournament.

During the 6th inning of Friday’s game, fans’ disappointment turned to worry as one of the most reliable arms in the Arkansas bullpen left the game after facing just four batters.

[autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag], a freshman from Hernando, Miss. who has been used primarily as the Arkansas closer, left the game in the 6th inning in what seemed to be earlier than anticipated.

During the SEC Network broadcast of the Arkansas-Florida game, cameras showed Tygart exhibiting signs of discomfort during a mound visit with pitching coach [autotag]Matt Hobbs[/autotag]. After chatting with Hobbs briefly, Tygart exited the game and [autotag]Zebulon Vermillion[/autotag] entered from the bullpen.

While most feared that Tygart had suffered an injury, fans can now breathe a sigh of relief now that a reliable source, Tygart’s mother Belinda, has shared that Tygart was just feeling lightheaded.

Head coach [autotag]Dave Van Horn[/autotag] confirmed after the game that Tygart felt nauseated during the game, and that there was no injury.

In his first year at Arkansas, Tygart has recorded eight saves while striking out 47 batters in 34.0 innings of work.

Next up for Arkansas is the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. The announcement of Arkansas’ post season destination will be revealed Monday morning.

Arkansas Baseball: Four Razorbacks grab SEC Awards

Arkansas Baseball was well represented on the all-freshman team, as well as the all-defensive team from the Southeastern Conference

Now that the regular season has concluded, four Razorbacks find themselves listed among the Southeastern Conference’s best.

Arkansas pitchers Hagen Smith and Brady Tygart were named to the Freshman All-SEC team, while Connor Noland and Robert Moore grabbed SEC all-defensive team honors, the league announced Monday.

[autotag]Hagen Smith[/autotag], a freshman from Bullard, Texas, was thrown into the Razorbacks weekend pitching rotation early, starting in 13 of 14 series primarily as the Saturday starter. In 13 starts, Smith struck out 68 batters while holding an ERA of 4.34 in 64.1 innings pitched. In what was his best outing of the season, Smith struck out nine batters while tossing 7.0 innings in a 4-2 win over Southeastern Louisiana on March 5. He matched his longest outing of 7.0 IP against LSU on April 15.

Fellow freshman [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] was a reliable arm for the Arkansas bullpen, being used primarily in a late-inning, closer role. The freshman from Hernando, Miss. recorded eight saves for Arkansas in 2022, striking out 47 batters in 34.0 innings pitched.

[autotag]Connor Noland[/autotag] has stepped up in a huge way for the Razorbacks. With the loss of [autotag]Peyton Pallette[/autotag] due to Tommy John Surgery at the beginning of the calendar year, Noland has become the Friday night starter for Arkansas. Noland, who only made 12 appearances over the last two seasons, has started in 14 games this season with a 5-4 record. Noland has struck out 90 batters while walking just 26.

The primary second baseman for Arkansas, [autotag]Robert Moore[/autotag], has just one error in the field in 204 fielding opportunities, while making 74 putouts. He and shortstop Jalen Battles have combined to become one of the best one-two punches in the SEC when it comes to making plays in the field.

Arkansas Baseball opens their stay at the SEC Tournament on Wednesday morning. While in Hoover, the Razorbacks will look to win a couple of games in an effort to boost their chances of hosting a regional next weekend at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Webb, Tygart earn all-SEC weekly honors

Webb’s plate presence and Tygart’s clutch pitching earn honors from the SEC

The week of April 25 through May 1 was kind to Arkansas.

After winning a tough midweek game over Central Arkansas in North Little Rock and grabbing yet another SEC series win by taking two-of-three from Ole Miss, the No. 4 Razorbacks gained some traction in the latest polls.

Two of the main reasons for the successful week were honored by the Southeastern Conference on Monday. [autotag]Braydon Webb[/autotag] was crowned SEC Player of the Week while freshman right-hander [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] was named SEC Freshman of the week, the league office announced on Monday.

Webb was an asset at the plate by grabbing two hits in all four of Arkansas’s games, making him instrumental in the successful week for Arkansas.

After a two-hit effort in the win against UCA at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, Ark., Webb continued his tear during the weekend series with Ole Miss. He socked home runs and tallied multiple RBI in each of the first two games against the Rebels before racking up another multi-hit game in the series-clinching win on Sunday.

Tygart struck out five batters in two appearances out of the bullpen in the series with Ole Miss.

Arkansas’ Brady Tygart tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of relief across two games against Ole Miss over the weekend. He earned his second win of the season on Saturday, fanning a pair over two hitless frames of work. The Razorbacks’ closer came back in Sunday’s series finale against the Rebels, firing three shutout innings with five strikeouts to pick up his seventh save of the year.

What makes his weekend sweeter, is that the Hernando, Miss. native got some revenge on Ole Miss.

“They were one of the Mississippi schools that I wanted to offer me, and they didn’t offer,” said Tygart following Sunday’s 4-3 Arkansas win. “I had a little bit more of an edge seeing them in that powder blue.”

This is the first week that multiple players from Arkansas have earned SEC weekly honors, and the third and fourth players from Arkansas to earn weekly awards from the conference. Cayden Wallace was named co-SEC player of the week and Hagen Smith earned freshman of the week honors earlier in the season.

Arkansas Baseball rises in polls following series win over Ole Miss

The Razorbacks earned a well-deserved series win over Ole Miss, which really impressed the pollsters.

After losing their second series of the season at Texas A&M two weeks ago, Arkansas baseball bounced back to take two-of-three from Ole Miss at Baum-Walker Stadium to move to 14-7 in SEC play and a two-game lead in the SEC West standings with three conference series remaining.

The Razorbacks dropped the first game of the series to Ole Miss on Friday but were able to take the final two games in front of a national audience.

Tied at 3-3 heading to the bottom of the 9th inning, [autotag]Jace Bohrofen[/autotag] and [autotag]Braydon Webb[/autotag] reached base with one out, which gave [autotag]Kendall Diggs[/autotag] an opportunity to win the game. He cranked a home run to right field to give the Razorbacks the 6-3 win, evening the series.

Arkansas took the final game of the series on Sunday thanks to a two-run home run by [autotag]Michael Turner[/autotag] and an impressive three-inning relief effort by [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag], who allowed one hit while striking out five batters in the 4-3 win.

The series win sets up a crucial series on Friday at Auburn, who is two games behind Arkansas for the top spot in the SEC West standings. How did the polls view the series win over Ole Miss? Take a look below.

Homers lift Hogs to series win over Ole Miss

Chris Lanzilli and Michael Turner each hit two-run homers in Arkansas’ clinching win.

Arkansas’ weekend series against Ole Miss wasn’t must-win in the traditional sense. But if the Razorbacks were to fall at home in two out of three against an SEC rival, the homestretch of the league season would be tenuous.

And while it still may be, the Diamond Hogs can breathe a bit easier, anyway.

Arkansas took the rubber match of a three-game set against the Rebels at Baum-Walker Stadium by winning Sunday, 4-3, behind the strength of two home runs. The victory ensured the Diamond Hogs (34-10, 14-7) at least a one game lead for second-place in the SEC.

Chris Lanzilli’s two-run shot in the third inning put Arkansas ahead, 2-1, after Tim Elko’s RBI single the first. When Ole Miss plated two on Kemp Alderman’s single in the fourth, [autotag]Michael Turner[/autotag] hit a two-run job to right, scoring Lanzilli, to provide the game-winner.

Zack Morris and [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] worked six innings out of the Arkansas bullpen, allowing just two hits while walking six and striking out six. Ole Miss chased Hogs starter [autotag]Jaxon Wiggins[/autotag] after three when he allowed six baserunner and three runs.

Arkansas is back at home Tuesday in its final nonconference game of the year: against rival Missouri State. After that, the Diamond Hogs head to Auburn, are home against Vanderbilt and go to Alabama to close the regular season.

Walkin’ Off: Diggs’ homer in bottom of the ninth seals Arkansas victory

Bottom of the ninth. Full count. Tie game. Kendall Diggs had a dream come true for Arkansas.

They are the kind of moments dreamt of by baseball players the world over from a young age.

Bottom of the ninth. Tie game. Full count. [autotag]Kendall Diggs[/autotag] made that dream come true.

Arkansas’ designated hitter, the nine-hole hitter, went yard, hitting a three-run home run to give the Diamond Hogs a 6-3 walk-off win over Ole Miss. The teams play a rubber game Sunday afternoon after the Rebels took Game 1on Friday.

Ole Miss had only tied the game an inning before. Evan Taylor walked three straight Rebels hitters to start the inning. [autotag]Brady Tygart[/autotag] induced a double-play immediately after, but Ole Miss tied the game on it.

[autotag]Braydon Webb[/autotag] also homered for Arkansas for a second straight game and [autotag]Brady Slavens[/autotag] joined him in going deep. Slavens’ homer came in the first and gave the Hogs an early lead.

TJ McCants and Tim Elko hit solo shots in the second and third to put Ole Miss back ahead before Webb’s two-run dinger set the stage for the finale.

Arkansas starter [autotag]Hagen Smith[/autotag] was left out of the decision despite throwing six innings and striking out eight. Tygart picked up the victory, pitching the final two frames in which he walked two and struck out two.
