RECAP: Wisconsin drops its third consecutive game with 86-60 loss to Illinois

RECAP: Wisconsin drops its third consecutive game, falling to Illinois 86-60

Wisconsin’s basketball recent losing streak continued on Tuesday night.

The Badgers fell 86-80 to Big Ten rival Illinois. The loss is the team’s third straight in the last week, dropping it to 8-3 overall and 0-2 to start Big Ten play.

Star freshman Kasparas Jakucionis led the way for the Illini with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists on 8-of-15 shooting. His performance defined the night — a continued breakout as one of the best players in the sport.

Illinois junior guard Tre White also had his best game of the young season with 21 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, capped off by a massive put-back dunk on an offensive rebound.

That play tells the story of the game. It highlights the rebounding totals, which again skewed away from Wisconsin.

Illinois finished with 40 rebounds (15 offensive), while the Badgers tallied just 29. Illinois’ second-chance points decided the game down the stretch. Wisconsin held strong through most of the contest, though they were largely kept at arm’s length due to an inability to control the defensive glass.

Greg Gard’s team had a big chance when Illinois committed a flurry of fouls early in the second half. It spent the final 14:42 in the bonus and a significant time in the double bonus. The team shot just 14-of-21 from the line, however, leaving a critical batch of points on the table.

The Badgers were again led by John Tonje (14 points, four rebounds, three assists), plus got big contributions from Nolan Winter (15 points, seven rebounds, two steals) and Max Klesmit (13 points, four assists). Center Steven Crowl (nine points on 3-of-9 shooting) continued his slow start to the season.

The loss is Wisconsin’s ninth straight to the Illini. The Badgers haven’t defeated the Big Ten rival, let alone on the road, since 2019.

Wisconsin is now in desperate need of a victory after the losing skid move to three. They are back in action on Saturday for a neutral site contest against Butler.

RECAP: Wisconsin basketball falls short against Michigan, drops first game of 2024-25 season

RECAP: Wisconsin basketball falls short against Michigan, drops first game of 2024-25 season

Wisconsin basketball fell to the Michigan Wolverines 67-64 on Tuesday night, dropping its first game of the 2024-25 season.

The story of the game can be told by a pair of stat lines:

Michigan center Vladislav Goldin finished the contest with 24 points, four rebounds and three blocks on 9-of-16 shooting, while forward Danny Wolf closed with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and five blocks on 7-of-11 shooting.

Michigan’s two big men dominated the contest from start to finish. In a game where neither team found its shooting stroke from deep (Michigan 24% from three, Wisconsin 22%), the interior play of those two players ignited the Wolverines’ victory.

The game was tightly contested in every category. Michigan shot 39% to Wisconsin’s 34.4%, grabbed 43 rebounds to Wisconsin’s 41 and scored 34 points in the paint to Wisconsin’s 28.

The back-and-forth battle was decided by a key exchange late in the second half: Wisconsin led 64-61 with 2:23 remaining. A Goldin dunk cut the deficit to one point, before another layup gave Michigan a one-point lead with 1:34 remaining. Max Klesmit got several clean looks from three-point range to put the Badgers back in front. He missed the first, which allowed the Wolverines to extend the lead to 67-64. He then missed the second as time expired.

Wisconsin falls to 8-1 and 0-1 in Big Ten play with the loss. Michigan, meanwhile, is 7-1 to start Dusty May’s first season in charge. The triumph also pushed the Wolverines to 1-0 in Big Ten play.

The Badgers are back in action on Saturday on the road at rival No. 5 Marquette.

Wisconsin punter out-rushed Penn State star running back in first half of Badgers vs. Nittany Lions

Wisconsin punter out-rushes Penn State star running back in first half

Wisconsin punter Atticus Bertrams had one of the highlights of the first half of the Badgers’ premier matchup with No. 3 Penn State. He took a fake punt on 4th-9 of Wisconsin’s opening drive for a 15-yard gain, continuing a drive that ended in a Nathanial Vakos record-setting field goal.

That opening score was a big moment in a first half that ended with Wisconsin leading 10-7. The Badgers’ defense hung tough with the Nittany Lions’ top-ranked offense — not allowing much consistent offense aside from a 90-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter.

One stat accurately portrays Wisconsin’s performance through one half and the game’s tight margin. Bertrams (one carry, 15 rushing yards) out-rushed Penn State star running back Nicholas Singleton (five carries, nine rushing yards).

Singleton also tallied three receptions, 37 receiving yards and Penn State’s lone touchdown — so it’s not as if Bertrams bested his overall production.

But the Badgers have performed well against Singleton and Penn State’s lethal rushing attack through one half. I’m sure defensive coordinator Mike Tressel is pleased with the stat sheet listing Wisconsin’s punter ahead of Penn State’s star running back on the rushing yard leaderboard.

RECAP: Wisconsin escapes Northwestern with a 23-3 victory

Quick reaction to Wisconsin’s win over Northwestern:

Wisconsin escaped Evanston, Illinois with a 23-3 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday.

The Badgers improve to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play with the win. Northwestern, meanwhile, drops to 3-4 with the loss.

The game fit the script of many Wisconsin vs. Northwestern games over the years. The game had its ugly stretches, highlighted by a collection of blocked and missed field goals throughout the first half. There was a feeling that points were at a premium, at least until Wisconsin built its lead in the second half.

The game changed in the final moments before the halftime break. 50 seconds remained in the period when Northwestern had the football on its own 13-yard-line after a 10-yard first-down run by RB Joseph Himon II. Instead of running the ball into halftime trailing just 7-0, David Braun’s team decided to get aggressive. QB Jack Lausch dropped back to pass, was pressured by a collection of Wisconsin defenders, and coughed up the football. Badgers DT Elijah Hills recovered the fumble at the Wildcats 3-yard-line, setting up an easy score and a 14-0 halftime lead.

Northwestern did show signs of life early in the second half. It drove down to Wisconsin’s goal-line, though the Badgers held strong and kept the drive out of the end zone. That theme defined the afternoon — Wisconsin meeting every Northwestern punch with a clear response.

The Badgers went on to orchestrate a long touchdown drive to close the third quarter with a 21-3 lead. Northwestern’s offense didn’t have enough to battle back in the game.

Wisconsin’s performance was far from perfect. QB Braedyn Locke turned the ball over twice, K Nathanial Vakos had a field goal blocked and the Wisconsin defense missed several key opportunities to force Northwestern turnovers. But the Badgers finished with another decisive margin on the scoreboard. The team has completely turned around its season after a rocky 2-2 start.

Wisconsin now continues into a season-defining home matchup with No. 3 Penn State

The Alabama men’s basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching loss to No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide had spurts of success and droughts on both ends of the floor. At the end of the day, Alabama did not do enough to come away with a victory inside Coleman Coliseum.

Nate Oats’ squad had its share of ups and downs. This game had a lot on the line in terms of regular season championship implications. However, there is at least four games left this season for the Crimson Tide.

Several Alabama players stepped up in big ways while others struggled at times.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN: Stat leaders from Alabama’s Week 11 win against Kentucky

Breaking down the stats leaders from Alabama’s Week 11 win over Alabama.

With Alabama having several starters out this weekend against Kentucky this past weekend, the Crimson Tide were forced to look in a different direction. Some players who took on larger roles against the Wildcats were wide receiver Kobe Prentice, cornerback Trey Amos, and linebacker Jihaad Campbell.

It did not matter much in terms of Kentucky seeing more success. Alabama did a good job on both sides of the ball of executing the game plan set before them. Ultimately, the Crimson Tide cruised to a commanding 49-21 victory over the Wildcats.

Wisconsin basketball started its season strong last night with a 105-76 win over Arkansas State.

The Badgers broke a Kohl Center record with 105 points, and finished with the 12th-highest-scoring game in program history.

The biggest story coming out of the night is the team’s depth. 12 players found the stat sheet and 10 of them played 12 minutes or more.

Chucky Hepburn led the way with 20 points, six assists and three steals, transfer guard A.J. Storr added 15 points, Max Klesmit had 14 points and true freshman John Blackwell came off the bench to tally 12 points and four rebounds.

The top-end players are there with Hepburn, Storr, Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl. This team also appears to have another 8-10 players that can contribute when needed. It’s an impressive group.

Wisconsin basketball began its season with a bang last night, as it defeated Arkansas State 105-76.

Chucky Hepburn led the way with 20 points, six assists and three steals, transfer guard A.J. Storr added 15 points of his own, Max Klesmit had 14 points and true freshman John Blackwell came off the bench to tally 12 points and four rebounds.

It was an all-around effort for Greg Gard’s team. It also showed the team’s depth, as 12 players found the stat sheet and 10 of them played 12 minutes or more.

The massive win was also notable because it was the 12th-highest-scoring performance in Wisconsin basketball history.

Breaking down the stats leaders from Alabama’s Week 9 win over LSU.

The Crimson Tide were neck-and-neck with the Tigers heading into halftime. Things were nodded up at 21 a piece. After the half, Alabama outscored LSU 21-7 en route to a 42-28 victory.

A large reason for Alabama’s success came from its consistency in closing out the game. The Crimson Tide were solid on both sides of the ball. Tommy Rees and Kevin Steele had excellent game plans to slow down the Tigers.

Alabama was led statistically in several categories by some of its best players.

Alabama remains undefeated after taking down the Texas Longhorns in the final minute of the game. The leaders started shaky but found their groove late in the game.

Bryce Young looked inconsistent for most of the contest but proved he’s worthy of Heisman candidacy when the game came down to the wire.

Though it wasn’t pretty, a win is a win.

It was an odd game from start to finish that made for some amazing entertainment but ultimately led to a lackluster box score.
