Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler previews playing at Tennessee

Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler previews playing at Tennessee and Josh Heupel getting the Vols back to a great standard.

Tennessee will kick off its 2021 season under first-year head coach Josh Heupel on Sept. 2 against Bowling Green at Neyland Stadium.

Kick off is slated for 8 p.m. EDT. SEC Network will televise the matchup.

Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” and discussed opening the season against the Vols.

“I played in that stadium whenever I was coaching with Urban (Meyer) at Florida,” Loeffler said. “It is a great environment. It is going to be very challenging for our young players, in particular they have never been in that type of environment. I know a SEC eight o’clock game, following a pandemic of all things, it is going to be rocking and rolling. We are going to have to work on crowd noise right off the get go in training camp, really have to do a good job and prepare our young team to go down there and play a really good Tennessee team.

“I think Josh is a great hire there — along with Tim Banks and Willie Martinez, a bunch of guys on that staff I know. They are really good football coaches and they will get Tennessee back to you guys’ great standard and expectations that you have down there.”

The entire show with Loeffler can be listened to here or below. Loeffler discusses Bowling Green football, the Falcons’ offensive scheme, calling plays, Heupel’s offense and his relationship with Tom Brady.

Notre Dame Basketball Great Walt Sahm Dies at 78

Few Notre Dame basketball players represented both the school and the state of Indiana as well as Walt Sahm.

Few Notre Dame basketball players represented both the school and the state of Indiana as well as Walt Sahm. At 6-foot-9, he was key at a time when big men were highly valued in basketball. That height allowed him to soar to rebounding greatness with the Irish after a nice high school career with Cathedral in Indianapolis. On Jan. 5, Sahm passed away of complications from COVID-19 at the age of 78.

From 1962 to 1965, Sahm averaged 16.9 rebounds a game, giving him a program record that stands to this day. He’s also third in Notre Dame history with 1,146 rebounds. With a 15.8 scoring average, he’s only of only two players to average over 15 points and 15 rebounds over their Irish career. All of that, along with being a three-year starter and co-captain, made him an easy choice for Notre Dame’s All-Century Team, which was unveiled during the 2004-05 season.

During Sahm’s career, the Irish went 42-35 and made the NCAA Tournament twice. Both appearances ended in close first-round defeats. In 1963, Sahm had 14 points and 15 rebounds but couldn’t match the 16 points and 20 boards from Bowling Green’s Nate Thurmond. He finished his career in fitting fashion two years later with a 17-point, 10-rebound performance against Houston.

Mick Asaf Leaving Irish, Football to Pursue Gaming Business Full-Time

Notre Dame senior running back Mick Assaf announced Friday that he is leaving football.

Notre Dame senior running back Mick Assaf announced Friday that he is leaving football. He will not play for the Irish this season so that he can focus completely on YOKE, his video gaming business. He released the following statement:

Asaf played in all 13 games for the Irish in 2019 and won the season’s Walk-On Players Union Player of the Year Award at the Echoes. He carried the ball from scrimmage nine times for 34 yards, giving him an average of 3.8 yards a carry. His best game came against Bowling Green, when he gained 15 yards on four carries.

A product of the Mendoza College of Business, Asaf has majored in marketing and minored in innovation and entrepreneurship. Now, the Atlanta native will use all of that to try and make his mark on the gaming industry. As one era in his life draws to a close, he can be enthusiastic about his new one. Best of luck to him going forward.

Big Ten conference led the Power Five in total revenue in 2019 according to USA Today

There has become a constant debate around the college football world over the past few years about which conference truly holds the title…

There has become a constant debate around the college football world over the past few years about which conference truly holds the title of the best conference in college football.

You go to SEC Network and hear Paul Finebaum rave about the SEC and argue that they’ve always held the title.

You go to FOX Sports and hear Joel Klatt and others explain that with Ohio State’s recent success, the gap between the conferences isn’t as large as many think.

Well, in at least one category the Big Ten can say they reign supreme and that is the total revenue from the 2019 season.

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz did a deep dive on each conference’s revenue from last season and, according to his numbers, the Big Ten took first place by more than $60 million.

Here are some of the interesting revenue stats noted by Berkowitz (don’t mind his cover photo of one of Chase Young’s countless trips to the Badgers’ backfield).

  • “The Big Ten brought in $781.5 million, which resulted in payouts of about $55.6 million to each of the 14-team conference’s 12 longest-standing members. Maryland and Rutgers received smaller revenue-share amounts, but both schools also received loans from the conference against future revenue shares.”
  • “The Pac-12 reported $530.4 million (payouts of about $32.2 million per school). That figure that does not take into account the equity value of the Pac-12 Networks, the conference’s fully self-owned television and video content provider whose expenses help result in the conference passing less money to its member schools than the other conferences.”
  • “The Atlantic Coast reported $455.4 million (payouts from $27.6 million to $34 million across 14 schools, plus $6.8 million to Notre Dame).”

First, cue the “Notre Dame should be in the ACC” chatter as you can see they received a sizable payout from the conference.

Second, through these numbers it’s clear that the Power Five conferences are doing more-than-well financially and maybe could withstand this upcoming season of no fans and no out-of-conference contests.

Who will be in trouble are programs from Group of Five conferences that rely on their Power Five contests to stay afloat financially.

Take this nugget from Bowling Green losing their chance to play Ohio State and Illinois.

Teams like Bowling Green (literally) bank on playing games against Power Five schools and without those contests their athletic departments will struggle financially in future years.

Yes, the Big Ten led the major conferences in revenue. But the big story here isn’t that, it’s the financial stability of schools in Power Five conferences and the upcoming struggle for smaller Group of Five schools.

Notre Dame Walk-On TE Xavier Lezynski Looking to Make Impact

An NJ.com story about Notre Dame walk-on tight end Xavier Lezynski wastes no time with the “Rudy” reference.

An NJ.com story about Notre Dame walk-on tight end Xavier Lezynski wastes no time with the “Rudy” reference. To be fair, it also acknowledges that there’s little in common with Lezynski and Rudy Ruettiger. For one, Lezynski is 7 inches taller and nearly 70 pounds heavier than Ruettiger was when he made his famous appearance. However, he’s also played as many snaps as Ruettiger did:  two, both against Bowling Green in 2019.

The story goes on to talk about Lezynski’s family, which resides in Newtown, Pennsylvania. His parents met at Notre Dame, and all four of their kids graduated from there. One of them, Nick, is on Brian Kelly’s staff as a defensive senior analyst. If there ever was a family defined by one school, this is it.

There’s no telling how much of the field Lezynski will see this year given his small size in comparison to Notre Dame’s other tight ends. Hopefully, it will be more than two plays against a team that comes to South Bend to take its lumps and go home. But no matter what happens, just to wear the gold and blue during Saturdays in the fall is honorable enough for him.

From Green Bay to New York: James Morgan hopes to bring some Favre, Rodgers to Jets

James Morgan grew up watching Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and has used that to get him to the NFL.

As a young boy growing up in Green Bay, football was always part of James Morgan’s life.

Morgan idolized Packers quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. He wore Favre’s No. 4 in youth football and Rodgers’ No. 12 in high school and throughout his college career at Bowling Green and Florida International. The Jets’ fourth-round pick has tried to blend Favre’s and Rodger’s approaches with his own.

“I was just mesmerized with how amazing that was and the performances (Favre) consistently put out,” Morgan said at the NFL combine in February. “Just the gunslinger mentality I’ve tried to emulate with my own game.

“At the same time, you’ve got to have the Rodgers [mindset where] it might be safer here to take the check down or something instead of trying to force it. I take a little bit from both of their games but [they’re] definitely an inspiration for me.”

The 23-year-old Morgan had a unique path to the NFL. No quarterback from Green Bay had received an FBS scholarship in over 30 years until Morgan got one from Bowling Green. A quarterback from the state of Wisconsin had not been selected in the NFL draft since Bud Keyes in 1998.

“The biggest thing about my road is that it definitely was not without its bumps,” Morgan said. “It wasn’t from Point A to Point B like I thought it was, but I’m extremely appreciative that I had those adverse situations because it made me the player and the man I am today. It’s definitely not how I would’ve pictured it, but I’ve learned a lot along the way and am very thankful to be at this point.”

Morgan won’t get the chance to play for his hometown team, but he is playing for one of Favre’s former teams in the Jets. The hope is that he’ll develop into a dependable backup behind Sam Darnold.

“It’s going to be a dream come true,” Morgan said. “I grew up inspired by Brett Favre; he was a Jet and I just can’t believe it. I had some big-city experience at Miami and I can’t wait to go to New York/New Jersey. I’m so extremely excited and I can’t wait to get going and get to work.”

Bowling Green-Miami (Ohio) odds: RedHawks big favorites over Falcons

Previewing Wednesday’s Bowling Green Falcons at Miami (Ohio) RedHawks sports betting odds and lines, with college football picks and tips.

The MAC East-leading Miami RedHawks (5-4) will face the Bowling Green Falcons (3-6) Wednesday night. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET from Fred C. Yager Stadium. We analyze the Bowling Green-Miami odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Bowling Green at Miami (Ohio): Three things you need to know

1. Bowling Green has been held to 10 or fewer points four times this season and has been shut out twice. The Falcons average only 17.6 points per game, which is 122nd in the country. They scored 35 points in their last game against Akron, though.

2. Miami has won four of its last five games with its only loss in that stretch coming against Western Michigan. The RedHawks averaged 24.8 points per game in their last five but just 22.7 on the year (107th).

3. Miami is 110th in the country with an average of 124.7 rushing yards per game, but it could take advantage of Bowling Green’s porous run defense. The Falcons are giving up 214.4 rushing yards per game this season, among the worst in college football.

Prediction

Miami 27, Bowling Green 17

Moneyline (ML)

The moneyline isn’t worth touching. Miami (-1250) is too heavy of a favorite to bet to win straight up, and it’s simply not worth the risk. The same goes for Bowling Green as the underdog at +590.

Bowling Green is 6-12 SU in its last 18 games against Miami, but 5-5 in the last 10 meetings. Still, it’s not worth putting any money here. Save it for the spread.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The RedHawks are favored by 18.5 points in this one and it’s easy to understand why. Bowling Green has really struggled this season despite turning things around slightly of late.

Miami has covered the spread in four of its last five games and is 7-1 in its last eight games against MAC opponents. It’s difficult to see the RedHawks covering 18.5 points this time around with an offense that hasn’t been lighting up the scoreboard. Take BOWLING GREEN (-110) and the points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over/Under is 50.5 points and history says the total will go Over. In the last six games between these teams, the total has gone Over in five of them.

These offenses aren’t playing particularly well, though, so I’m inclined to take the UNDER (-110).
