Freshman Marcel Reed achieves feat that hasn’t been done at Texas A&M since Johnny Manziel

Redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed has certainly made the case to start for the No. 24 Texas A&M football team and he continued building upon it this past weekend.

During a narrow 26-20 victory on Saturday night at Kyle Field against Bowling Green, Reed accomplished a feat that hasn’t been done by an Aggie since Johnny Manziel.

According to Texas A&M Athletics Communications, the freshman is the first Aggies quarterback to throw for 2 touchdowns and rush for 80+ yards in back-to-back games since Johnny Football in 2012. Jerrod Johnson (2009), Stephen McGee (2006) and Reggie McNeal (2005) are the only other Texas A&M signal callers to do so in the past 30 years.

Reed completed 16-of-29 attempts for 173 yards and 2 scores with 12 carries for 91 yards against the Falcons. In a 33-20 win on Sept. 14 at Florida, Reed connected on 11-of-17 throws for 178 yards and 2 TD with 13 rushes for 83 yards and 1 tuddy.

The Aggies continue SEC play with the Southwest Classic on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Texas A&M Pro Football Focus grades after defeating Bowling Green

Here are some of the Pro Football Focus grades from Texas A&M’s 26-20 win over Bowling Green

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated Bowling Green 26-20 in a game that was way too close for comfort from start to finish, as quarterback Marcel Reed made his second consecutive start amid Conner Weigman’s ongoing shoulder injury.

In a game where the Aggies never trailed, it certainly felt like the home team was playing from behind, as Reed and the offense failed to find consistency through the air, while the run game stalled out on multiple possessions but still produced 235 yards on the ground.

Defensively, the D-line was great against the run, limiting the Falcons to 85 rushing yards, while Shemar Turner and Shemar Stewart recorded their first sacks of the year. While defensive end Nic Scourton finished second on the team in tackles, the junior knows the pass rush must improve.

“I thought the D-line played OK. We are supposed to be a dominant force on that defense… It’s a lot of holes and stuff that we can fix and put less stress on the backend.”

While the score was close compared to the pregame expectations, Pro Football Focus’s newest player ratings show progress from several players on offense and defense.

Along the offensive line, starting left tackle Trey Zuhn III (88.8 pass-blocking grade) and right guard Ar’maj Reed-Adams (86.1 pass-blocking grade) did now allow a pressure in 30-plus pass-pro snaps. At the same time, backup center Koli Faaiu, who came in for the injured TJ Shanahan, finished the game with a team-high 80.8 offensive grade.

Returning to Scourton (6 tackles, one tackle for loss) and Stewart (2 tackles, one sack), both defensive linemen recorded the highest defensive grades on the night. In the secondary, safety Marcus Ratcliffe recorded his third interception in three consecutive games, recording three tackles on the night. Here are the rest of the notable PFF defensive grades.

  • LB Scooby Williams (81.5)
  • LB Taurean York (82.0)
  • LB Daymion Sanford (80.9)
  • CB Will Lee III (81.1)
  • CB Jaydon Hill (80.0)
  • S Marcus Ratcliffe (70.4)

Note: In an earlier article, we examined quarterback Marcel Reed’s PFF grades.

Texas A&M will face Arkansas inside AT&T Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPN.

Grading Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed’s performance vs. Bowling Green

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed had his ups and downs in Saturday’s win vs. Bowling Green

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) left Kyle Field with a 26-20 win over Bowling Green (1-2) on Saturday night, but this wasn’t the type of victory that had the coaching staff and the fan base pleased with the Aggies’ performance.

Coming off an impressive 33-20 victory over Florida the week prior, backup quarterback Marcel Reed’s impressive performance led to his second career start. He looked the part again early in the game.

Throwing a perfect endzone strike to sophomore tight end Theo Melin Öhrström in the Aggies’ first offensive drive, the offense failed to find consistency, but this wasn’t due to poor play on Reed’s end. Following Pro Football Focus’s grading system, here is how Marcel Reed performed in Saturday’s win against Bowling Green.

Passing:

On the night, Reed completed 16/29 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6 yards per completion and ending the game with a 75.5 QBR. Per PFF, Reed’s 15 completions on 24 dropbacks came with a clean pocket, earning a 70.2 offensive grade and a 67.8 passing grade. Reed also went 0-4 in the air when completing outside the numbers past 10 yards, which could help opposing defenses moving forward if improvement does not take shape.

However, when pressured, Reed was 1/8 for eight yards on 11 dropbacks, earning a low 51.8 offensive grade and a 37.9 passing grade. While he needs to get the baller out quicker under pressure, Reed still hasn’t thrown an interception all season.

Rushing:

There’s no doubt that Marcel Reed is the most versatile quarterback on the roster, running for 83 yards and a touchdown last week vs. Florida, eclipsing these numbers against the Falcons after scrambling for 91 yards on 12 carries, averaging 7.6 yards per attempt. While injured quarterback Conner Weigman looks like a more polished passer, no one can deny that Reed’s twitchy athleticism and notable speed only make the Aggie offense harder to stop moving forward.

Grade:

In his second career start, Marcel Reed gets a B- with plenty of room for improvement in the pocket.

This week, after not dressing out against Bowling Green, Marcel Reed is expected to start his third game of the season as the Aggies head to AT&T Stadium to face Arkansas on Saturday afternoon.

Texas A&M rises in the newest AP Top 25 Poll after defeating Bowling Green

Texas A&M has surprisingly risen in the newest AP Top 25 rankings

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated Bowling Green 26-20 on Saturday night, disappointing the Aggie fan base compared to the team’s performance against the Florida Gators in week 3.

However, Bowling Green is by far one of the country’s top Group of Five Teams after nearly defeating a top-ten-ranked Penn State team on the road to open the season. Still, the Aggies only have themselves to blame for mistakes on both sides of the ball that nearly led to an upset loss.

In quarterback Marcel Reed’s second career start, the redshirt freshman showed some improvement in the passing game while adding 91 yards on the ground. Still, he only completed 1-8 or eight yards under pressure due to leaky play from the offensive line throughout the night.

However, a win is a win, as head coach Mike Elko and his team will focus on Arkansas this weekend.

Around the rest of the SEC, Tennessee looks like the top team in the conference, shutting down Oklahoma on the road. In contrast, the Missouri Tigers looked beatable after defeating Vanderbilt at home in overtime.

After staying pat in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll, Texas A&M has risen to No. 24 in the newest AP Top 25 Poll.

Did Texas A&M rise in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll?

Texas A&M didn’t move in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll after defeating Bowling Green

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated Bowling Green 26-20 on Saturday night, disappointing the Aggie fan base compared to the team’s performance against the Florida Gators in week 3.

Behind redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed’s second career start, the Aggie offense stalled out after driving down the field for an opening possession touchdown, as Bowling Green’s defense held the Aggies at bay outside of two field goals to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.

Still looking somewhat disjointed in the second half, Reed utilized his legs for 91 yards on the ground while throwing a solid red zone strike to wide receiver Jahdae Walker. Defensively, A&M’s limited the Falcons to 85 yards on the ground but allowed tight end Harold Fannin Jr. to reel 8 receptions for 145 yards and a 65-yard touchdown.

For the Aggies, a win is a win, but head coach Mike Elko was not pleased and has plenty of work ahead this week.

Around the rest of the SEC, Tennessee looks like the top team in the conference, shutting down Oklahoma on the road. In contrast, the Missouri Tigers looked beatable after defeating Vanderbilt at home in overtime.

‘We just got to be better’ players react to Texas A&M’s 26-20 win over Bowling Green

Even in a win, Texas A&M enters next week with a lot of unanswered questions

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated the visiting Bowling Green Falcons (1-2) on Saturday night, only to leave a packed Kyle Field with an underwhelming 26-20 victory that certainly could have gone the other way if it wasn’t for kicker Randy Bond’s four field goals.

It was a win that felt like a loss to the fans, media members, and even Aggies head coach Mike Elko, who knows that resting on your laurels usually results in similar outcomes to what we saw on Saturday night.

“This is what I said to the guys… ‘If you ever relax in this game, it will find a way to humble you instantly.'”

“You have a big road win and you tend to relax because that human nature… You can’t do that.”

Offensively, backup quarterback Marcel Reed made his second consecutive start, finishing the game with 173 yards through the air and two touchdowns while running for 91 yards. However, he was inaccurate for most of the game due to a lack of wide receiver separation and poor blocking up front.

After the game, starting right guard Ar’maj Reed-Adams and defensive end Nic Scourton joined Elko at the podium to speak to the media. Adams noted the offense’s loose play, which resulted in several lapses, including a late fumble by running back Le’Veon Moss.

“It just got a little loose at the end. We kept the intensity the same throughout the week.”

“Things don’t change because we won a road game. We just got to be better.”

Scourton, who finished the game with six tackles, a tackle for loss, and a QB hurry, felt like the defensive line played well throughout the game but, like all of us have observed, noted that this unit has not lived up to its preseason hype, recording just two sacks on the night.

“I thought the D-line played OK. We are supposed to be a dominant force on that defense… It’s a lot of holes and stuff that we can fix and put less stress on the backend.”

However, one bright spot on defense was holding Bowling Green to 89 yards on the ground. This was the second consecutive game this season that A&M’s defense has kept teams under the 100-yard mark.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M football’s 26-20 win over Bowling Green

Texas A&M came away with a victory in a game that was hard fought until the final play

Texas A&M (3-1, 1-0 SEC) narrowly escaped Kyle Field with a 26-20 win Saturday night against a highly competitive Bowling Green Falcon (1-2) team.

The Aggies came out blazing on the first drive of the game, marching down the field and converting third and fourth downs, which ended in a 27-yard touchdown to Theo Melin Ohrstrom. From there, it was tough sledding for the rest of the first half, with both defenses limiting any big plays.

Both teams traded punts and field goals as time winded down for a 10-3 score as Texas A&M took a slim lead into the locker room. Following halftime, Bowling Green scored on a 65-yard touchdown pass to star tight end Harold Fannin Jr. after the kick-off went out of bounds to start the half. That led to an exciting third quarter where they exchanged scores to go into the final quarter with the Aggies up 20-17.

The Falcons, having all the momentum and only down three, took advantage of a missed field goal to kick their own and extend the lead to 23-17. The Aggie defense stiffened up, only allowing a late field goal in a game that was too close for comfort.

The Aggies’ next game is against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, on ABC on Sept. 28.

Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed will reportedly start vs. Bowling Green

Marcel Reed will make his second consecutive start against Bowling Green

(This story was updated to add new information)

Texas A&M’s Week 4 home matchup vs. Bowling Green is just an hour away, as the Aggies look to start a winning streak heading into next weekend’s annual SEC showdown vs. Arkansas inside AT&T Stadium.

After earning the program’s first SEC road win in over three seasons against the Florida Gators last Saturday, backup quarterback Marcel Reed started his first career game due to starter Conner Weigman’s shoulder injury, which was more serious than many expected.

This week, head coach Mike Elko stated that for the rest of the regular season, the team’s starting quarterback will not be announced until just an hour before kickoff. Going into Saturday, it was expected that Marcel Reed would make his second consecutive start as Weigman continued to rehab his shoulder, and according to TexAgs’ Billy Liucci, the Aggie insider confirmed that the redshirt freshman will start against the Falcons.

In two appearances this season, including last weekend’s win, Reed leads the Aggies with 249 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 126 yards rushing and a score.

Note: Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman did not dress out ahead of Texas A&M vs. Bowling Green.

Texas A&M will host Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.

2025 4-star WR and Florida State commit is currently visiting Texas A&M

One of the top 2025 wide receiver prospects is reportedly visiting College Station today

Texas A&M’s (2-1. 1-0 SEC) Week 4 home matchup against Bowling Green (1-1) will feature just some of the Aggies’ 21 commits in the 2025 recruiting class as head coach Mike Elko looks to keep the momentum going against the Falcons on Saturday night.

However, while the 2025 cycle is filled with future defensive talent, securing elite prospects at the wide receiver position has been an issue under first-year wide receiver coach Holmon Wiggins, whose impressive recruiting track record during his time at Alabama has failed to carry over to College Station.

However, according to recruiting insider Jaxson Callaway, Elko and Wiggins are reportedly hosting 2025 4-star wide receiver and current Florida State commit Daylan McCutcheon on Saturday, looking to take advantage of the Seminole’s immense struggles on the field this season.

Amid his senior season at Lovejoy HS in Lucas, Texas, McCutcheon is a quick-footed, twitchy athlete with plenty of speed who consistently takes the top off of most secondaries while putting up big numbers over his last two seasons.

During his sophomore and junior seasons at Lovejoy, McCutcheon reeled in 117 receptions, 1,704 yards, and 22 touchdowns through the air.

According to 247Sports Composite, McCutcheon is currently positioned as the 106th-ranked ranked prospect, the 14th-ranked wide receiver prospect, and the 20th-ranked prospect in Texas.

2025 4-star wide receiver Kelshaun Johnson and 3-star wideout Tristan Norman are Texas A&M’s only receiver commits in the cycle thus far.

Texas A&M will host Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.

Texas A&M DE Shemar Stewart is using football to help those in need

Shemar Stewart is continuing to make an impract on an off the field

Texas A&M junior defensive end Shemar Stewart entered the 2024 season with lofty goals, including double-digit sacks after recording just one a year ago. Under the guidance of new head coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, Stewart has begun to ascend in the Aggies’ first three games.

In last weekend’s SEC road win over Florida, Stewart finished second on the team in tackles with five, including two solo tackles, half a sack, and half a tackle for loss. Looking past the stats, Stewart was all over the field, beating his one-on-one matchup more often than not while disrupting nearly every passing set.

While the former 5-star athlete’s future on the field is extremely bright if he continues to improve, Stewart sat down in a recent interview, representing the Aggies as an NCAA athlete in today’s NIL-dominated landscape. While the Miami, Florida native is involved in several NIL initiatives, he focuses on helping those in need with the good fortune he’s received.

“College football has provided me with the recourses to help better myself and to help provide for my family back home” Stewart stated. “My teammates and my coaches, you know, we all like to strive to be the best person we could be in the game of football and what ever we’re doing.”

“And my coaches, they never ease up on me. They always push me to the limit. So I always, always thank them for that. Coming from not the best living situations, you know, my goal is like one day just supply everybody. Like if someone is in need I can help them make sure life is better because I wish I had someone in my life that could do that for me.”

Lastly, Stewart knows that a simple smile can brighten someone’s bad day, especially in the locker room when adversity hits.

“I want people to remember me as the person that’s always laughing becuase I feel that’s how you brighten someone’s day up. I want to be remembered as someone that always brightens peoples days.”

Texas A&M will host Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.
