Former University of Tennessee basketball player Grant Williams made his second postseason start Thursday in Boston.

The former two-time Southeastern Conference player of the Year and 2019 first-round draft pick was held scoreless. The Celtics squandered a late lead, losing to defending NBA champion Milwaukee, 110-107, at TD Garden in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The third-seeded Bucks, who trailed, 105-102, closed the game with an 8-2 run. Milwaukee has a 3-2 lead in the series over No. 2 Boston.

Williams recorded two rebounds and one assist for the Celtics.

The series resumes Friday at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT and ESPN will televise the contest.

Notre Dame offers four-star Massachusetts forward T.J. Power

The Irish could use this kid.

If the next season began today, Notre Dame would have a whole lot of guards but not many forwards. Heck, it was like that this past season. However, could a power forward from Massachusetts help rectify that problem in a couple of years? Say hello to T.J. Power, a 2023 recruit who has received an offer from the Irish:

Power attends Worcester Academy and lights it up for that school, but he also plays for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, of which Bonzie Colson is an alumnus. He’s done pretty well for that team lately, too:

And he’s catching the attention of at least one recruiting analyst:

So far, the Irish will have to battle with the following ACC rivals for Power’s services: Miami, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Others in contention include Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma, Marquette and Georgetown. A decision likely won’t come for a while, but let’s hope for the best.

Notre Dame’s Jake Pivonka is finalist for Derek Hines Award

Congrats to the Irish captain.

An Achilles injury put Notre Dame forward Jake Pivonka’s senior season in jeopardy. He was able to return to game action in mid-December after sticking around as a team leader as he went through rehabilitation. Now, the captain and 2018 New York Islanders fourth-round pick is being recognized in a big way. He has been selected as the Big Ten finalist for the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.

The award, which is presented by the Hockey Commissioners Association, is given to the player who best “displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic.” It is named after Derek Hines, a former Army player who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in 2005.

In 126 career games with the Irish, Pivonka has 38 points, nine of which have come on goals. Of those nine, four have been game-winners. One of those came in the deciding game of the Irish’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal win over Wisconsin.

The winner of the award will be announced April 8 during Frozen Four weekend festivities in Boston.

Romeo Langford’s heroics lift Celtics over Magic in preseason opener

The Celtics open preseason with a dramatic win at TD Garden

It may have been only a preseason game at TD Garden, but it was not a preseason crowd. Celtics fans were in midseason form during the 98-97 win, as Boston ventured back from down 11 in the fourth quarter to steal their preseason opener from Orlando in front of the raucous garden fans.

The Celtics started many of the usual suspects, with Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Jayson Tatum all getting the nod. Despite starting, all three played around 25 minutes on the night. Brown opened the night with early 8-0 run of his own making to give Boston a 21-20 advantage after the opening quarter. He would lead the Celtics with 25 points on the night despite not closing out the game.

The second quarter belonged to Magic center Mo Bamba, who responded with the first nine Orlando points of the period. The 2018 lottery pick got it done in a variety of ways, knocking down threes, finishing lobs, and turning offensive rebounds into points. Bamba finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds on 6-10 from the field. The two teams traded leads as the Magic took a 52-50 advantage into the half.

Throughout the third quarter and into the first half of the fourth, Orlando built their lead behind hot shooting from distance. A Bamba dunk gave the Magic a 97-86 advantage with 6:23 in the contest. From there, it was the Celtics youngsters who brought Boston back behind an incredible TD Garden crowd.

Aaron Nesmith connected on his only two threes of the ballgame, Payton Pritchard drilled a pair of 28-footers, and all of a sudden the Celtics were down only a pair with 36 seconds left. Following a Pritchard miss and an Orlando rebound, Langford came up with a key steal and save. From there, it was no hesitation as Pritchard found him for the game-winning three.

That’s not a normal preseason crowd reaction:

The Celtics take on Toronto on Saturday in their second preseason game of the season.

Naked Boston woman drove golf cart through armed standoff outside Tampa, Florida

When a joyride goes really, really wrong.

It’s fun to drive around in a golf cart. You know it. I know it. Jessica Elisabeth Smith knows it.

The 28-year-old from Boston was having herself a night, driving one outside Tampa in Dunedin, Florida, on Sunday when she encountered an active standoff with police, all while completely naked and emitting the “distinct odor” of alcohol.

Local authorities were in pursuit of an armed man who then climbed onto the roof of a home and pointed a gun at them. Smith drove past multiple sheriff’s vehicles and ignored commands to stop. Officers eventually got her out of the cart and the standoff between the SWAT unit and the man lasted six hours before deputies ultimately arrested 18-year-old Myles Abbott, who shot himself in the leg during the incident. Abbott now faces two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated assault as well as one for a felon in possession of a firearm. Two other teenagers were also taken into custody.

Despite the affidavit detailing how Smith’s “actions and inability to follow directions put multiple deputies at risk for potentially getting shot at,” Smith only faces a charge for resisting an officer without violence.
