Augusta company’s golf carts use solar recharging power for first time at Ryder Cup

An Augusta golf cart company is using solar power at the historic Ryder Cup for the first time to charge its carts.

An Augusta golf cart company is using solar power at the historic Ryder Cup for the first time to charge its carts.

Since 1997, Club Car has been providing carts for the biennial tournament between U.S. and European golf teams. In this year’s tourney, being held just outside Rome through Oct. 1, much of the fleet is being charged by a bank of solar panels.

It’s the first time the Ryder Cup has used solar-powered charging points, which ties into the tournament’s sustainability policy and a commitment by the European Tour Group to be carbon-neutral by 2040, said Ryder Cup operations director Paul Dunstan.

“It’s a very complex site – much like a small town – with a large number of grandstands, hospitality facilities and event infrastructure. The best way to navigate the site quickly and efficiently is to use the vehicles Club Car provides,” he said.

Club Car is an official cart supplier for the PGA, the DP World Tour and the St. Andrews Links Trust. The company shipped 550 carts overseas to use in the Ryder Cup.

The fleet consists of six red and six blue team cars, driven by captains Luke Donald and Zach Johnson and their vice-captains, “plus hundreds more golf, turf and utility cars to assist with almost every area of the Ryder Cup from media and broadcasting to security and medical transportation,” Club Car said in a release.

Man dies after caged golf cart sinks in canal at California course

The man was an employee of the golf course and was in a maintenance cart belonging to the course.

A man is dead after the golf cart he was riding in became submerged in a canal at the Golf Course at Terra Lago in Indio, California, on Monday, just a few miles from the three courses set to host this week’s PGA Tour stop.

The man, who was an employee of the golf course and was in a maintenance cart belonging to the course, had been riding on the golf course path before ending up in the canal, Indio Police public information officer Ben Guitron said. Officers and firefighters responded to the course just after 2 p.m., he said.

“We’re going to wait and see what the results are from the coroner’s office, but it appears they may have drowned as a result of the accident. But that’s all preliminary information,” Guitron said.

The cart was described as being a caged cart that was submerged on its side in the canal, according to a tweet from CalFire/Riverside County Fire Department. Guitron said it is common for carts for employees to have a cage around them to protect riders from golf balls on the course.

Firefighters pulled the cart from the canal and the man was declared dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation by both the Riverside County Fire Department and the Indio Police.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.

Guitron said his department is currently investigating the incident as an accident but does not yet know about the state of the driver or what led to the crash. That information should become clearer once the coroner completes its investigation, he said.

Guitron said police investigators will likely be on the course investigating for a few more hours.

As of 5:40 p.m., officers could be seen on the south course near the 10th tee and 12th green roughly 100 yards from Terra Lago Parkway.

Get dialed in with Desert Fox’s Phone Caddy

Desert Fox’s Phone Caddy fastens to any golf cart with an adjustable strap for easy access on the course.

We’ve all sent a text in between a shot or posted a picture of a daring hole in one on the course. The phone then either resides on the seat of the cart, in the cupholder, or in the storage areas near the steering wheel sliding around and scratching the phone. Desert Fox Golf knows the program which is why the group invented the Phone Caddy.

Secure your device to a golf cart with Desert Fox’s patent-pending technology. The caddy fastens to the cart with its adjustable velcro strap to fit any cart and any modern phone. The product comes in many different colorways, designs and quotes.

The rubber pads of the caddy keep your phone safe and easy to use while freeing up those cup holders and storage areas. Magnets are a common alternative, but phones easily come off the magnet and go flying from the cart.

The placement of the phone caddy makes using all your golf apps a breeze. There are many different apps that give you distances to pins and tell you what you’re up against on each hole. The caddy conveniently displays all the information without any hassle.

The Match: Brooks Koepka trolls Bryson DeChambeau with his golf cart

Brooks just can’t stop trolling Bryson.

Brooks Koepka is obsessed with trolling Bryson DeChambeau.

Before the pair of U.S. Open champions put their beef on the line Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET in the fifth playing of The Match, Koepka took to Twitter to share his decked-out golf cart, plastered with his logo, Michelob Ultra’s logo and four not-so-subtle shots at his competitor.

Paying homage to himself, Koepka has four quotes referencing his past DeChambeau burns beneath his seat: 2 short of a 6 pack, Let’s go Brooksy, There’s an ant and Sorry bro. After the lengthy beef between two of the PGA Tour’s best, maybe Koepka is finally out of content.

Naked Boston woman drove golf cart through armed standoff outside Tampa, Florida

When a joyride goes really, really wrong.

It’s fun to drive around in a golf cart. You know it. I know it. Jessica Elisabeth Smith knows it.

The 28-year-old from Boston was having herself a night, driving one outside Tampa in Dunedin, Florida, on Sunday when she encountered an active standoff with police, all while completely naked and emitting the “distinct odor” of alcohol.

Local authorities were in pursuit of an armed man who then climbed onto the roof of a home and pointed a gun at them. Smith drove past multiple sheriff’s vehicles and ignored commands to stop. Officers eventually got her out of the cart and the standoff between the SWAT unit and the man lasted six hours before deputies ultimately arrested 18-year-old Myles Abbott, who shot himself in the leg during the incident. Abbott now faces two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated assault as well as one for a felon in possession of a firearm. Two other teenagers were also taken into custody.

Despite the affidavit detailing how Smith’s “actions and inability to follow directions put multiple deputies at risk for potentially getting shot at,” Smith only faces a charge for resisting an officer without violence.
