Bears 2023 training camp preview: Offensive line

Our next Bears position preview is the offensive line, a group that will look very different than it did in 2022.

Chicago Bears training camp is less than a month away, which means it’s time to start looking ahead at the roster the team is bringing to Lake Forest.

We’re unveiling our Bears 2023 training camp position previews, where we’re breaking down every player by position and examining the biggest question facing the group.

Rounding out the offensive side of the ball is the offensive line, a group that only has one projected starter playing the same position they played in 2022. Braxton Jones is back at left tackle but the rest of the line has done more shuffling than the 1985 Bears.

Teven Jenkins and Cody Whitehair were both prominent starters in 2022 who are now playing new positions, while newcomers Nate Davis and Darnell Wright were added to anchor the right side of the line. Meanwhile, players like Lucas Patrick and Larry Borom are now backups after entering last year’s camp as starters.

Here’s a closer look at the Bears’ offensive line heading into training camp.

Bobby Haskins NFL player profile: Chicago Bears

Bobby Haskins will try to secure a practice-squad slot and see if he’ll get a chance to protect Justin Fields in Chicago.

Bobby Haskins will get a chance to make an NFL roster with the Chicago Bears. The 6-7, 295-pound offensive tackle from Fairfield, Connecticut, appeared in 45 games over the last four seasons at Virginia and started at left tackle for USC this past season. Haskins was a seven-game starter at left tackle for the Cavaliers in 2021 and a full-time starter in 2019. He was a reserve during an injury-plagued 2020 season.

Haskins appeared in eight games as a senior at the tackle positions (he was slowed early in the season while recovering from an offseason injury).

Bobby Haskins

Pos: OT/OG

Arm: 3238
Wing: 7934
40: 5.25
DOB: 11/15/1998

I believe if he stays healthy Haskins can be a practice squad lineman for the Bears, who struggled at the offensive lineman position the past couple years. Chicago needs options as it tries to give Justin Fields better protection. Haskins will try to become part of that effort.

Bobby Haskins joins Chicago Bears with UDFA deal

Bobby Haskins will get his NFL opportunity in Chicago. #NFLDraft

The USC Trojans saw just four players get selected during the 2023 NFL draft: Jordan Addison, Tuli Tuipulotu, Mekhi Blackmon, and Andrew Vorhees. However, others received UDFA deals, including Travis Dye, who signed with the New York Jets. Brandon Pili signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins as well.

In other news, Bobby Haskins also inked a UDFA deal, this time with the Chicago Bears.

Haskins spent his first three seasons at Virginia. He then transferred to USC and played in 13 games in his lone season with the Trojans, and now he will have a chance to fight for a 53-man roster spot with the Bears.

Andrew Vorhees, another USC offensive lineman, was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round, and there’s a good chance Brett Neilon earns a UDFA deal with some team in the league.

The Bears are undergoing a youth movement, so even though Haskins is undrafted, he should have a decent chance to earn a practice squad spot at the very least.

With the NFL draft concluding on Saturday, more and more UDFA deals should strat to trickle in over the next 48 hours.

USC Football Report Card: Handing out grades to the Trojans after UCLA conquest

The biggest grade of all: #USC got an “A” for this very big “W” over UCLA. That was the assignment. The Trojans completed their homework.

That was quite a night.

If you had been following USC and UCLA all season long, you knew this was going to be a shootout.

You might have predicted a 48-45 final score. I personally had 52-42 USC if Eric Gentry had been able to play effectively and with force. He briefly played, but clearly was not fit enough to play a lot of snaps. If Gentry wasn’t able to play, I labeled this game as a coin flip, with one team winning 50-49 on a 2-point conversion.

Yet, even though we all knew this would be a video game, it was still thrilling and very entertaining to see it all play out if you were a neutral party.

If you were a USC fan, it was a roller-coaster of stress, anxiety, and ultimately, elation.

Let’s grade the Trojans on their performance:

Beating UCLA unleashed intense USC emotions for Korey Foreman and Bobby Haskins

Korey Foreman and Bobby Haskins felt the weight of the moment in a very powerful way. Other #USC players joined them after beating UCLA.

One of the best feelings in life is to wake up the morning after an ultimate victory by one of your sports teams. It’s the exact opposite of waking up to a crushing defeat in a huge game, like the Utah game on Oct. 15.

Man, this had to feel good for USC players, who celebrated deep into Saturday night after their 48-45 win over the UCLA Bruins. They will wake up Sunday morning and will instantly realize that, yes, it’s real. It’s not a dream.

It’s the actual condition of their world and their 2022 season. They really did it.

USC players get to bask in the glow of beating UCLA. Notre Dame can wait until Monday.

Sunday is a 24-hour “appreciate and savor what you have done before the next big test comes along” zone.

No two USC players felt the weight of the moment more than Korey Foreman and Bobby Haskins.

Foreman, injured and unable to live up to his recruiting ranking and the hype which greeted his arrival at USC for nearly two whole seasons, produced a career-changing play which not only made his season, but validated his own perseverance. It was a classic “Fight On!” moment for “Agent Zero.”

Haskins has spent the past week grieving after the unfathomable tragedy which shook his former school, the University of Virginia. He knew the men who died in that shooting. A piece of Haskins’ heart was shredded and left behind in Charlottesville, though Haskins was in Los Angeles to prepare for this game, in which he played brilliantly.

Let’s take you through the powerful emotions and images of the UCLA postgame scene for various USC players, plus head coach Lincoln Riley:

USC got some players back vs Colorado, but questions linger heading into UCLA

Let’s give you an update of the important non-Travis Dye injury situations heading into UCLA. It’s Bruin Week now.

The Travis Dye injury was and is the huge story for USC in the Colorado game, and we have a bunch of stories this Saturday morning on that crushing turn of events. We do have other important items to cover, however, and the best place to start is the collection of other injury and player availability situations facing the Trojans with UCLA Game Week now upon us.

USC needs all hands on deck against the Bruins. It’s the defining game of the season even when the Trojans and Bruins aren’t very good. This year, of course, they are both very good. The winner likely gets a spot opposite Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The winner might also have a good shot at a New Year’s Six bowl bid.

Let’s give you a look at the other important non-Travis Dye injury situations at USC:
