Jaguars sign former Rams, Vikings OT Bobby Evans

The Jaguars signed veteran offensive lineman Bobby Evans and placed tight end Sammis Reyes on the reserve/retired list.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran offensive tackle Bobby Evan and placed tight end Sammis Reyes on the reserve/retired list, the team announced Sunday.

Evans, 26, was a third round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in the 2019 NFL draft and played in 35 games with the team before getting released late in the 2022 season.

As a rookie, Evans took over as the Rams’ starting right tackle in the latter half of the year. However, he played just one offensive snap in his second season and bounced around as a reserve lineman in his last two seasons, earning time at both guard and tackle.

After getting cut by the Rams, Evans briefly joined the Minnesota Vikings practice squad and spent the first week of training camp with the team before getting released earlier this month.

Reyes, 27, signed with the Jaguars in May and was out of action for a preseason game Saturday night while in the concussion protocol. No further information about his decision to retire is known at this point.

Vikings sign OT Jarrid Williams, terminate contract of OT Bobby Evans

The Minnesota Vikings are bringing in OT Jarrid Williams and terminating the contract of OT Bobby Evans.

The Minnesota Vikings have been working on fortifying the offensive line this week. After Aaron Wilson reported the signing of OT Christian DiLauro on Wednesday night, the Vikings officially announced his signing along with OT Jarrid Williams while terminating the contract of OT Bobby Evans.

Williams was an undrafted free agent out of Miami FL in the 2022 NFL draft and was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent time on both the Eagles and Detroit Lions’ practice squads.

Williams started his college career at Houston and followed quarterback D’Eriq King to the sunshine state. He played in 50 games during his college career with 39 total starts.

Evans ended his second tenure with the Vikings after just 10 days. he spent time on the Vikings practice squad at the end of 2022 as well.

The Vikings now have a full 90-man roster.

Former Rams OL Bobby Evans to sign with Vikings

Bobby Evans struggled mightily with the Rams, but he’s getting a shot with Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings

Bobby Evans was selected by the Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, but he really struggled during his time in Los Angeles. He made just 12 starts in four seasons, being active for 35 total games since 2019.

His former offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell, is giving him another shot, though. According to Aaron Wilson, the Vikings are signing Evans. Evans actually signed to Minnesota’s practice squad back in January but was released less than three weeks later, so this will be his second crack with the Vikings.

Evans earned a pass blocking grade of 16.4 in 314 snaps played last season, having very little success in pass protection with the Rams. He allowed 24 pressures and a whopping seven sacks. He played left guard, left tackle and right tackle, so the Rams did move him around a bunch, but he was eventually cut after failing to play with any level of consistency.

Vikings plan to sign OT Bobby Evans

The Minnesota Vikings bring back Bobby Evans, who spent time on the practice squad in 2022.

The carousel of Minnesota Vikings roster moves on Monday continues. Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston, the Vikings are signing offensive tackle Bobby Evans.

The Vikings added Evans to the practice squad last season after he was released by the Los Angeles Rams, where he played in 35 games with 12 starts.

He played for head coach Kevin O’Connell, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips and quarterbacks coach Chris O’Hara while they were with the Rams.

The Vikings placed guard/center Chris Reed on the non-football injury list earlier on Monday and also signed guard Jack Snyder, who played with the Rams in 2022 and the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2023.

These moves are to strengthen the depth on the offensive line for training camp. Evans is capable of playing multiple position, but is at his best at tackle.

The Vikings now have a full roster heading into training camp.

Broncos host OL Bobby Evans on free-agent visit

Bobby Evans is a versatile offensive lineman who could provide more depth and competition for the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos hosted offensive lineman Bobby Evans on a free-agent visit on Monday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Evans, 25, ended the 2022 season on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. Because he was not on an active roster at the end of the year, he is eligible to sign a reserve/future contract, but at the time of this writing, the Broncos have not signed him.

After playing college football at Oklahoma, Evans (6-4, 312 pounds) was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. He is a tackle by trade but Evans also spent time at guard in L.A., starting in 12 games over the last four seasons.

Evans dressed for 12 games and earned four starts in 2022 and was credited with 6.5 sacks allowed and committed two penalties. The Rams cut him in December, and he was picked by the Vikings a few days later.

The offensive line remains a big area of need for the Broncos, and a versatile veteran like Evans might be worth adding for more depth and competition at guard and tackle.

Vikings place O’Neill and Schlottmann on IR, make 2 other roster moves

The offensive line has a couple of new members

The Minnesota Vikings had some injuries to the offensive line on Sunday afternoon against the Green Bay Packers and they made some roster moves on Tuesday to address those issues.

The Vikings placed right tackle Brian O’Neill and center Austin Schlottman on injured reserve effectively ending both of their seasons. In turn, the Vikings signed center Greg Mancz to the active roster and tackle Bobby Evans to the practice squad.

Mancz is an eight-year veteran that spent most of his time with the Houston Texans. He played in one game with the Buffalo Bills this season and has played in 64 games overall.

Evans won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams last season after being a third-round pick by the team in 2019. He played in 35 games for the Rams over his three seasons, including 12 this season with four starts.

Former Rams OL Bobby Evans signs to Vikings practice squad

Bobby Evans has found a new team after being cut by the Rams last week, landing with the Vikings

Bobby Evans started four games for the Los Angeles Rams this season, but only after they sustained several injuries to other players up front. The team ultimately decided to cut him last week and he didn’t have to wait very long to get another opportunity elsewhere.

The Vikings announced Tuesday that they’ve signed Evans to their practice squad. To make room for Evans, they released another former Ram: Chris Garrett.

Evans joined the Rams as a third-round pick in 2019 and was set to be a free agent this offseason. He started 12 games across those four seasons, appearing in 35 total during his career.

The Vikings lost right tackle Brian O’Neill to a calf injury on Sunday against the Packers, so Evans could help fill in and provide some depth along the offensive line. He also gets to reunite with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was with the Rams during Evans’ time in Los Angeles.

Rams waive Bobby Evans, activate Chandler Brewer

The Rams are moving on from Bobby Evans, waiving him from the 53-man roster with Chandler Brewer on his way back

The Los Angeles Rams made three roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, including the release of Bobby Evans. He’s been waived from the 53-man roster and replaced by Chandler Brewer, who’s officially activated off injured reserve. The Rams also elevated Jared Pinkney from the practice squad for Week 17.

Evans was a third-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2019, so he’s the second player from that class to be cut this season; Darrell Henderson Jr. was waived last month. Evans was active for 12 games and started four games, struggling mightily throughout the year. He was only in line to be a backup this year but injuries forced him into a starting role.

Brewer started two games in Weeks 9 and 10, playing every snap in each of those games before injuring his knee and landing on IR. With Brian Allen out, Brewer provides depth along the offensive line behind the starters and could compete with Oday Aboushi or Matt Skura for a starting spot at guard.

What changes should the Rams’ offense make moving forward?

The Rams’ offense has mightily struggled thus far, but a few changes could get them on track moving forward.

We’ve seen small stretches where the Los Angeles Rams offense has sputtered since Sean McVay arrived in 2017. A Super Bowl victory a season ago had everyone feeling like a Matthew Stafford-led offense was going to wreak havoc for years in Los Angeles.

But at the midway point of the season, the Rams boast one of the worst offenses in the NFL and they have a 3-5 record, which has them in third place in the NFC West. Los Angeles is currently recording the second-fewest yards per game (286) and the fourth-fewest points per game (16.4) in the NFL.

With the Rams having an uncharacteristic year on offense thus far, McVay iterated that changes need to be made following the devastating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9. While alterations are expected to be made in hopes to get the team back on track, what should those changes be on the offensive side of the ball?

If the Rams are making changes, it’s obvious what the first one should be

It’s time for the Rams to make a change at left guard.

“Changes have to be made. Adjustments have to be made. We can’t continue to go on like this.”

That was a quote from Sean McVay after the Rams’ loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday, blowing a 13-9 lead with a minute left in the game. It was a gut-wrenching defeat for the Rams, who are now 3-5 after dropping two straight games after the bye.

Changes do need to be made. The offensive line is atrocious, the pass rush has struggled, the running game is ineffective and every receiver outside of Cooper Kupp has had a minimal impact.

But if the Rams are shaking things up, it’s abundantly clear which change should be made first. Bobby Evans needs to be benched as the starting left guard. Very simply, he’s done nothing to show he should be playing over the likes of Oday Aboushi or Chandler Brewer.

Obviously, he wouldn’t be playing if not for injuries to David Edwards, Coleman Shelton and Tremayne Anchrum Jr., but there has to be a better option at left guard moving forward.

Last week against the 49ers, he allowed a team-high four pressures, two QB hits and one sack. His pass-blocking grade was 15.5, according to PFF. Against the Buccaneers, he gave up three sacks and allowed consistent pressure from Vita Vea, getting completely overmatched by the Bucs’ pass rushers.

Sure, Vea is a Pro Bowl talent and one of the better nose tackles in the league, but Evans made him look like a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

He just doesn’t have the strength or technique to consistently block interior pass rushers and protect Matthew Stafford. Every quarterback will tell you pressure up the middle is the worst type of pressure, too.

This rep against Charles Omenihu was particularly concerning in Week 8, getting completely bowled over and allowing the pressure on Stafford, forcing the ball to come out early.

Shannon Sharpe was watching Rams-Buccaneers on Sunday and he didn’t hold back. He called the left guard “awful” and said he needs a couch because “all he’s doing is watching.”

That’s a bit harsh, but Evans really did struggle painfully in the loss.

The problem now is finding a replacement for Evans. If the Rams move Brewer to left guard, that would allow Aboushi to reclaim his role as a starter at right guard. Aboushi was plenty good enough last week against San Francisco, too, allowing zero pressures and recording the second-best pass-blocking grade of any Rams offensive lineman.

The Rams could also try Jeremiah Kolone at guard after previously starting him at center, but that may not be the best option, either.

Regardless of what Sean McVay and Kevin Carberry decide, the Rams need to find a new left guard.
