Bob Ryan’s tribute to Boston Celtics sixth man, Malcolm Brogdon

Ryan shares the story of Malcolm Brogdon, the latest recipient of the NBA’s prestigious Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Boston Celtics legend Frank Ramsey basically invented the concept of the sixth man during the Celtics’ untouchable dynasty of the late 1950s and 1960s, which was then perfected by Boston Hall of Famer John Havlicek.

Now, the award bearing Havlicek’s name for that reason has been earned by a Celtics reserve guard, and iconic Boston sports journalist Bob Ryan has something to say about it.

Ryan shares the story of Malcolm Brogdon, the latest recipient of the NBA’s prestigious Sixth Man of the Year Award. Brogdon’s unique combination of skills and selflessness has allowed him to adapt to various roles, providing his team with valuable support off the bench.

Bob Ryan highlights the former Virginia player’s commitment to the team’s success and his willingness to embrace the sixth man role, which has been instrumental in elevating his squad’s overall performance.

He also delves into Brogdon’s exceptional basketball IQ and his impressive offensive and defensive capabilities, explains how Brogdon’s ability to read the game and make the right decisions on the court has proven invaluable, and more.

Bob Ryan: This is the deepest Boston Celtics team I’ve ever seen

Ryan knows a thing or two about Celtics history after witnessing much of it.

New England sports journalist Bob Ryan has been covering the Boston Celtics since Tommy Heinsohn’s duties at Celtics games were to coach, not call, the contest. As a result, he may have one of the deepest reserves of memories about the team of anyone not on its payroll.

So when the esteemed Celtics journalist emeritus made a point of saying he believes this version of the club he made his bones covering is the deepest he can recall over the course of his long career, we ought to take heed and believe him.

And that is exactly what Ryan did on his semi-eponymous CLNS Media “Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman” podcast, breaking down his thoughts on this version of the team, JJ Redick’s recent comments about Larry Bird, and more.

Take a look at the link embedded above to hear it all.

Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell’s passing at 88: A Bob Ryan tribute

Ryan and Tanguay celebrate the life and career of the great Bill Russell.

There are few people in the sphere of Boston Celtics media who know the team or its history better than Celtics Boston Globe beat writer emeritus Bob Ryan. And even though his time with the franchise began just after legendary Boston big man Bill Russell‘s ended, Ryan knows the story of the greatest of all Celtics well.

The longtime Boston sports journalist took some time with fellow New England sports media personality Gary Tanguay to memorialize Russell after news broke of his death on Sunday at the accomplished age of 88, Ryan and Tanguay paid tribute to the 11-time champion in a special episode of the latter’s semi-eponymous show, the CLNS Media “Ryan, Tanguay and Goodman” podcast.

Watch the clip embedded below to hear Ryan and Tanguay celebrate the life and career of the great Bill Russell.

Q. How does a team go from a 39-33 …

Game 1 of the Finals was a 125-123 …

Championships: 3 (1981, 1984, 1986). …

Championships: 3 (1981, 1984, 1986). Coaches: Bill Fitch (1981). K.C. Jones (1984, 1986). Bob Ryan: Larry Bird. Remember him? He was great, all right, but he wasn’t enough. He was the 1979-80 Rookie of the Year, but the 76ers had little trouble dispatching the Celtics in five games, largely because the Celtics were too small. But Auerbach rectified that on draft day in 1980 by pulling off an almost shameful heist, swapping his Nos. 1 and 13 draft spots for No. 3 and Robert Parish, a misused 7-foot center out there in the Bay Area. With that third pick, Auerbach took a gangly 6-11 kid from Minnesota named Kevin McHale. The result? Championship No. 14 was produced that very first year. Suddenly, the Celtics had a monstrous frontcourt, and don’t forget Cedric Maxwell, whose 28-point, 15-rebound, 10-for-13 performance in the pivotal Game 5 against Houston nailed down his Finals MVP.

There were many memorable takeaways …

There were many memorable takeaways from the 1984 victory over the Lakers, but for me the everlasting memory is the entire evening of June 8, when because of a heat wave outside and lack of Boston Garden air conditioning inside, the temperature was 97 degrees for Game 5. The Lakers, most notably Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, thought they had been trapped in a science fiction movie, but Bird treated it like just another steamy summer evening in French Lick with 34 points, 17 rebounds, and 15-for-20 shooting. So sorry you young’uns missed out on Larry. 1986? I still believe it was the greatest pre-3-point-mania team ever. They won 67, and had they thought it was a good idea, they would have won 70. They were such a spectacular nightly show in the regular season that they rendered meaningless the concept of the meaningless game.

Ready for this? They closed out the …

Iconic Celtics beat writer emeritus Bob Ryan talks Boston inaccuracies in ‘Winning Time’

Not everything in the popular HBO series happened as it is portrayed, per Ryan.

The HBO NBA basketball series “Winning Time” documenting the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers in the late 1970s to join the Boston Celtics in dominating the league throughout the 1980s has won popular acclaim even if it has been pointed out as less than entirely accurate in the way it has portrayed several key Los Angeles characters integral to the telling of that particular tale.

The Celtics play a major role as the foil to the Lakers-as-protagonists in the show, and at least one person who was there to tell the story from the green and white perspective recently had some things to say about the show.

Speaking on an episode of “The Colin Cowherd” podcast, legendary Boston beat writer Bob Ryan shed some light on what factual inaccuracies regarding the Celtics can be seen in the popular NBA history series.

Check out the clip embedded above to get Ryan’s snapshot of that historic era.
