Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Toronto Blue Jays (22-26) take on the Detroit Tigers (23-26) Thursday in the opener of a 4-game set at Comerica Park at 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Blue Jays vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Blue Jays won 4-2 last year

The Jays took 2 of 3 from the Chicago White Sox to open the week. They culminated the series with a 9-2 beatdown Wednesday. SS Bo Bichette is starting to come around after a miserable start with the bat. He went 4 for 4 Monday and went 2 for 4 Wednesday with his 3rd homer of the season.

The Tigers were swept by the Kansas City Royals and have dropped 4 straight. Their last win was an 8-3 showing with today’s starter Jack Flaherty on the bump. They scored 3 runs in each game of the KC series and allowed 8+ in each.

Blue Jays at Tigers projected starters

RHP Kevin Gausman vs. RHP Jack Flaherty

Gausman (2-3, 4.89 ERA) makes his 10th start. He has a 1.51 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 9.1 K/9 in 42 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 1 BB, 6 K Saturday against Tampa Bay Rays
  • Last 5 starts vs. Detroit: 1-2, 2.56 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 30 K in 31 2/3 IP

Flaherty (1-3, 3.79 ERA) makes his 10th start. He has a 1.06 WHIP, 1.3 BB/9 and an MLB-leading 11.9 K/9 in 52 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K Saturday against Arizona Diamondbacks
  • 2 career starts vs. Toronto: 2-0, 0.82 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 12 K in 11 IP

Blue Jays at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3

Moneyline

The Jays are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings with the Tigers. Gausman’s numbers are nowhere near his mean thanks to 2 implosions. He has been solid on the road with a 3.06 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 4 starts. Flaherty’s numbers are a little inflated due to a revenge dominance against the St. Louis Cardinals with 14 K’s over 6 2/3 shutout IP. He has allowed 2+ ER in 3 straight starts and is starting to walk guys again.

I’ll take the BLUE JAYS -105.

Run line/Against the spread

I’m going JACK FLAHERTY OVER 5.5 K’S (-145) here. He has 6+ K’s in 9 of 10 starts. Enough said.

Over/Under

It’s slated to be 79 degrees with a 7-mph wind blowing out to left-center. The Tigers are 8-2 O/U over their last 10, and Toronto is just 3-7. Toronto’s bats are coming around, and their pitching has slumped to a 21st-ranked 4.30 ERA. They have enough to get it done, but I’m going OVER 7.5 (-115).

Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (33-23) head to Comerica Park Friday to start a 3-game set with the Detroit Tigers (23-33). First pitch for the series opener set for a 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Blue Jays vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Toronto is 7-3 straight up (SU) over the last 10 games, which includes a 3-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox, a 2-1 series loss to the Minnesota Twins and a 2-1 series win over the Kansas City Royals.

Detroit is 6-4 SU in the last 10, winning an interleague set at the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday-Wednesday after being swept by the New York Yankees, which followed the Tigers taking 4 of 5 games from the Twins.

Friday’s Blue Jays-Tigers meeting will be their 1st of the year.

Blue Jays at Tigers projected starters

RHP Jose Berrios vs. RHP Elvin Rodriguez

Berrios is 4-2 with a 5.24 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9 and 7.8 K/9 in 56 2/3 IP over 11 starts.

  • Last start: Win, 12-3, Saturday at home vs. the Minnesota Twins with 7 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 HR, 2 BB and 13 K.
  • 2021 vs. the Tigers: 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (20 IP, 6 ER, 7 R), 1.20 WHIP and 2.22 K/BB rate in 3 starts for the Blue Jays and, his previous team, the Twins.

Rodriguez is 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA (16 IP, 18 ER), 1.69 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 across 3 starts vs. the Twins (road), Cleveland Guardians (home) and the Yankees (road) and 1 bullpen appearance.

  • This is Rodriguez’s rookie season and he’s never faced the Blue Jays.

Blue Jays at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Tigers 6, Blue Jays 5

Money line

SPRINKLE on the TIGERS (+180) with the plan of hitting their RL harder since the Blue Jays (-230) are overpriced because Berrios is on the hill.

Berrios inked a fat, new extension this offseason but has underperformed thus far. He ranks 346th out of 356 tracked pitchers in barrel rate (per Statcast) and grades in the 5th percentile or worse in expected ERA, expected batting average, wOBA and slugging percentage slash line.

Detroit’s RL is the sharper wager but there’s some value in the TIGERS (+180).

Run line/Against the spread

BET 1 unit on the TIGERS +1.5 (+110).

The Blue Jays are just 6-10 RL as road favorites while being 10-6 SU.

Not only is Berrios getting too much love but Toronto’s bullpen is mediocre. The Blue Jays relievers have a 4.00 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and the 5th most blown saves (10).

Detroit’s bullpen has the 2nd-best ERA (2.78) and WHIP (1.09) and should be rested since Thursday was an off-day. The Tigers are 4-2 RL when playing after 1 day off.

Even if Rodriguez gets raked by Toronto’s lineup or Detroit’s lineup doesn’t hit Berrios, the TIGERS +1.5 (+110) could still sneak through the backdoor vs. Toronto’s suspect bullpen.

Over/Under

PASS.

“Lean” to the Over 8.5 (-135) because neither starter has looked sharp this year and the Blue Jays are 8-3 O/U in Berrios’ 11 starts.

But, there are a bunch of Under-friendly trends including Detroit’s 15-26 O/U record as an underdog and the Blue Jays-Tigers going Under in their last 4 meetings in Detroit.

Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (66-61) and Detroit Tigers (62-67) play the middle game of a three-game set Saturday at Comerica Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Blue Jays vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Tigers lead 3-1

Detroit took Friday’s opener 2-1 thanks to OF Victor Reyes’ tiebreaking, pinch-hit, inside-the-park, eighth-inning homer. The Tigers won as +145 underdogs and our STRONGEST PLAY of Under 9.5 easily cashed.

Saturday, Blue Jays rookie RHP Alek Manoah is projected to start. He is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA (68 IP, 24 ER), 1.10 WHIP, 10.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 13 starts.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K in 2-1 home win vs. Chicago White Sox Monday
  • Career vs. Tigers: No appearances

RHP Jose Urena, who has been out since mid-July due to a groin strain, is expected to be activated off the injured list to start for the Tigers. He is 2-8 with a 6.19 ERA (80 IP, 55 ER), 1.65 WHIP, 5.9 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 17 starts.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K at home vs. Minnesota Twins July 17, exiting early with groin injury
  • Career vs. Blue Jays: No appearances

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3

Money line (ML)

There’s value with Detroit (+170). However, I’m afraid of betting against Toronto (-210), which really needs a W here in hopes of not falling further back in the AL Wild Card race.

I could see making a small wager on the Tigers, but I’ll PASS and focus on the two plays below.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

ATS records: Blue Jays 66-61 | Tigers 72-57

BET DETROIT +1.5 (+105). The Tigers have been solid against the spread, owning the fifth-best ATS record in baseball and the second-best home ATS mark at 37-27.

They’re on a 4-0 ATS run and have covered five of their last six games. They’re 3-1 ATS this season against the Blue Jays, who are on a 3-11 ATS slide.

Over/Under (O/U)

O/U records: Blue Jays 56-66-5 | Tigers 56-68-5

UNDER 9.5 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager.

The Under is 6-0 in the Tigers’ last six games, 7-1 in the Blue Jays’ last eight and 4-0 in their head-to-head meetings this season.

Manoah only allowed 1 ER in his last start and features a 2.64 ERA (44 1/3 IP, 13 ER) in his last six starts.

Meanwhile, don’t let Urena’s 6-plus ERA fool you. He didn’t allow a run in his last start – even though he only pitched 3 innings – and he tossed 3 hitless, scoreless innings in his two Triple-A Toledo rehab starts.

Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (66-60) and Detroit Tigers (61-67) open a three-game series Friday at Comerica Park. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Blue Jays vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Tigers lead 2-1

The Blue Jays lost 10-7 to the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, splitting a four-game home stand.

The Tigers had Thursday off after 5-game road trip. They split a two-game series at the St. Louis Cardinals, concluding with a 3-2 loss in 10 innings Wednesday.

LHP Steven Matz is the Blue Jays’ projected starter and will face the Tigers for the second time in six days. He is 10-7 with a 3.94 ERA (112 IP, 49 ER), 1.36 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 22 starts this season.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 1 K in 5-3, 11-inning home loss vs. Detroit Sunday
  • Career vs. Tigers: 0-0, 1.50 ERA (6 IP, 1 ER) in the one start Sunday

Rookie RHP Matt Manning is the Tigers’ projected starter. He is 3-5 with a 5.91 ERA (53 1/3 IP, 35 ER), 1.56 WHIP, 4.9 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 11 starts.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 4 K in 13-10 home loss vs. Los Angeles Angels Aug. 19
  • Career vs. Blue Jays: No appearances

Prediction

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3

Money line (ML)

With Matz being the better starter in this matchup and the Blue Jays having the better offense, TORONTO (-180) is the play.

Toronto’s .263 batting average ranks second in the majors, while Detroit is 15th at .241.

However, with the price more expensive than I like, just BET TORONTO (-180) to WIN a HALF UNIT.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

ATS records: Blue Jays 66-60 | Tigers 71-57

DETROIT +1.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Don’t fret that the Tigers are 6 games under .500 straight up. They own the fifth-best ATS mark in the majors.

They covered in two of their three games vs. the Blue Jays last weekend and are 4-1 ATS in their last five games. Plus, they have the third-best home ATS record at 36-27.

Meanwhile, the Jays are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games.

Over/Under (O/U)

O/U records: Blue Jays 56-65-5 | Tigers 56-67-5

UNDER 9.5 (-107) is the way to go.

When they met last weekend in Toronto, all three games cashed Under tickets.

Plus, the Under is 6-1 in the Blue Jays’ last seven games and 5-0 in the Tigers’ last five.
