Notre Dame unveils 2023 edition of The Shirt

Right on schedule as usual.

Just in time for the Blue-Gold Game, this year’s version of The Shirt is here. Notre Dame fans tend to wear green whenever they attend a sporting event, and this year’s Shirt reflects that. So here it is in all its glory:

As always, half of the proceeds go to The Shirt Charity, which raises money for students with unexpected medical expenses. The rest of them go to student organizations and clubs as well as the Rector Fund, which affords all Notre Dame students the opportunity to have the full university experience no matter where they are financially.

The Shirt goes back to 1990, when the charity was established to fund activities for Notre Dame students. It has remained a staple ever since, and it consistently sells extremely well. You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to show your Irish pride and help the students of the university. Get it before it’s gone!

Watch: Marcus Freeman invites elementary school to Blue-Gold Game

This is the surprise of a lifetime for some of these kids.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] is doing everything to get people to Notre Dame’s annual Blue-Gold Game. That includes some of South Bend’s youngest residents.

When Freeman was at St. Adalbert Catholic School for a service project on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, he learned many of the student had never been to an Irish game. He decided that wasn’t acceptable and set out to make things right by giving what for many of them had to be the surprise of a lifetime:

It’s easy to forget that just because you live near an iconic college football stadium doesn’t necessarily mean you’re able to go. We don’t know the situation each of these students’ families is in, but that shouldn’t matter right now. What matters is that rain or shine, this will be an unforgettable day for everyone who boards those buses. Let this also be another reminder of how classy the individual at the head of the football program is.

Watch: Marcus Freeman to give away Hype Shirt at The Shirt reveal

You can have two shirts if you show enough school spirit.

The Shirt has become as iconic for Notre Dame football as the “Play Like a Champion Today” sign. The 2023 edition of The Shirt will be unveiled the day before the annual Blue-Gold Game. But that won’t be the only shirt that will be made available. [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has a Hype Shirt with Friday’s date on it, and he wants to give it away to the student who shows the most school spirit:

So if you’re a Notre Dame student who happens to be reading this, get to the Library Lawn at the moment of truth and do everything you can to win this shirt being offered by the head coach himself. Irish fans are among the most loyal in college football, and you’re going to have the chance to prove it at this event. If nothing else, it will be a story you can tell your children and grandchildren, and this Hype Shirt hopefully will end up in a place of honor.

Notre Dame players who will not play in Blue-Gold Game

You’re out of luck if you want to see these players in spring action.

The annual Blue-Gold Game is a fantastic experience for Notre Dame fans. It especially is a great opportunity for those who don’t have either the time or the money to get out to Notre Dame Stadium during the season. You get to watch your favorite Irish players in action at a fraction of the cost and without having to navigate through hoards of people whether they’re going to the game or not.

But just like with regular games, there will be players missing. For one reason or another, some of them might be seen on the sidelines but will not see any action. While that might be a disappointment to some people, it’s better to have them sit out now and not when the actual games start.

To save you any confusion and ease any disappointment that might come of these players not participating in the Blue-Gold Game, here they are:

Notre Dame football: Louis Nix’s two-point conversion run in 2013 Blue-Gold Game

The spring game will always make me think of Big Lou and for that makes me happy.

This weekend will be the annual Notre Dame spring football game, better known as the Blue and Gold game to Fighting Irish backers.  We’ll make a big deal about the events leading up to the game, over value a few performances from it, and be left without in-game action after it until late August.

The Blue and Gold game brings back memories of me to much more innocent times.  Headed to South Bend for my first one over 20-years ago, thrilled to get to meet the likes of Grant Irons, Rocky Boiman, and a little-known walk-on named Jessie DeSplinter after the game.

It’s not a game that traditionally features a bunch of epic moments or everlasting memories aside from the personal ones.  Well, except for one play that was somehow 10 years ago this year.

After a star showing in 2012 that had many thinking he’d be a top pick in the NFL draft, nose tackle [autotag]Louis Nix[/autotag] III stayed at Notre Dame for his senior season in 2013.  Unfortunately a knee injury that season would mean Nix never turned into the first round draft pick and he was quickly out of the NFL without ever really catching on.

Brutal news came a couple of winters ago when Nix died at just 29-years of age.  For a young man I never met, that one stung an incredible amount to hear for me as it did a lot of Notre Dame fans.

For as long as the spring goes on I’ll get excited about it as significant or insignificant as it may ultimately be, and I’ll always think of Nix’s two-put run that left everyone watching with a smile.

Here is what [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said about Nix’s two-point conversion after the untimely passing:

“I lost a bet with Louis. We had a bet relative to some of the things I needed Louis to do a little bit better around his weight. He did it. He lost some weight. Maybe you couldn’t have seen it. Maybe some people kidded me at the time and said he lost a little weight in his wrist. He lost some weight and maintained it. I said if you did that, we were going to give you an opportunity to run the football. It worked out pretty good, but it was a lost bet to Louis. That will be a fond memory for a lifetime.”  – Brian Kelly

Date for 2023 Blue-Gold Game set

Mark your calendars.

Sure, college football may have just ended, but that doesn’t mean the next season is far away. If you need further evidence, look no further than the date for Notre Dame’s annual Blue-Gold Game, which was just announced. Mark your calendars for April 22 because that’s when the 2023 edition will take place. For those who can’t make it to Notre Dame Stadium that day, it will be streamed live on Peacock.

Make no mistake: This is a big deal for Irish fans who are hungry to see their team back on the field. Now that [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] has arrived, that hunger has to be growing even now. It’s likely Hartman won’t finish the game because the Irish have to get reps for everybody on their roster. Still, any opportunity to see him is better than none at all.

Don’t be discouraged by the winter, Irish fans. College football will be back soon enough.

Shoulder surgery done on Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs

Tough break for the kid.

If you’re going to have major surgery as a college football player, you might as well have it before the season officially starts. Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs didn’t plan that, but he had little choice after suffering a torn left labrum in the Blue Gold Game. Diggs has undergone shoulder surgery, which was done by team surgeon Dr. Brian Ratigan. A quick Google search will tell you that the recovery time for that is between three and six months, so there’s no telling if Diggs will be healthy in time for the Irish’s first game.

Diggs made an impact as a freshman for the Irish in 2021. In eight games, he ran for 230 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries. He also scored one touchdown as a receiver while catching six passes for 56 yards.

Diggs’ best freshman game as far as yardage came when he ran for 64 yards at Virginia. He followed that up with a pair of touchdowns a week later against Georgia Tech.

Watch: Steve Angeli scores game-winning touchdown as time expires

What a moment for the freshman!

As a freshman quarterback with two veterans in front of him, Steve Angeli’s playing time likely will be limited during the 2022 season. However, he’ll have the memory of this year’s Blue Gold Game if nothing else. With time running out, Angeli had one final play on first-and-goal to save the day for the gold team. He kept the ball for himself, rolled out to the left, had the pylon in sight and, well, see with your own eyes:

If this is a sign of things to come, Angeli is going to have quite the career for the Irish. We might not see many signs of it this year, but any glimpse into the future like that has to make every fan optimistic for what’s to come. Hopefully, that won’t be Angeli’s only good memory of playing at Notre Dame Stadium. If it is, at least it was a clutch moment.

Start times for 2022 Notre Dame home games revealed

Mark your calendar.

During halftime of the Blue Gold Game, the start times for Notre Dame’s home schedule were unveiled. That will give Irish fans who anxiously are looking to plan their Saturday schedules for the autumn months peace of mind. While they’ll have to wait for the start times for the road games, they can at least make plans for these particular games, especially if they plan on going to Notre Dame Stadium. Here it is:

The one big thing you’ll notice right away is that unlike last year, there will be no games exclusive to Peacock, so that will save you the trouble of explaining it to your Irish fan relatives who don’t understand streaming. Also, the majority of these games will be played during the day, which will make the more traditional Irish fans happy. But whatever you think of any of the above issues, we all should be glad that this latest sign of college football on the horizon has come to pass.

Watch: Jadarian Price takes screen pass to house for touchdown

This was exciting.

One of the most exciting moments for any college football fan is when your team has an electric freshman. Might Notre Dame have its for 2022 in running back Jadarian Price? Only time will tell, but he just made a strong case for it in the Blue Gold Game. After catching a screen pass from fellow freshman Steve Angeli at midfield, Price took advantage of some nice blocking and, well, just watch:

The only thing more amazing than the touchdown is Marcus Freeman running after the play shouting jubilant phrases. Clearly, he sees something in Price, and those shouts appear to be his way of telling him that he knew this is what he’s capable of. We obviously won’t know how well this will translate into game action either this season or next, but this is a nice first step for him. Hopefully, this was the first of many fantastic memories he’ll have at Notre Dame Stadium.
