Black Strip Alert! Transfer from Michigan sheds black stripe

Welcome to the Brotherhood #GoBucks

You may remember not too long ago that Columbus native Joey Velazquez transferred home from Michigan to Ohio State. Velazquez is now an official member of the Brotherhood after losing his black stripe earlier this week.

Velazquez attended St. Francis DeSales High School and was a two-sport star playing both baseball and football. He originally committed to play baseball for the Buckeyes, but opted to head to Michigan when he was offered the opportunity to play both sports he loved.

Velazquez will only play football in Scarlet and Gray in his final year of eligibility. He’ll line up on the defensive side of the ball with the linebackers.

Ohio State offensive lineman loses black stripe

Offensive lineman loses his black stripe. #GoBucks

Saturday was a big day for Ohio State football with the commitment announcement from two high-priority recruits in the class of 2025 and some jaw-dropping highlights from some young guns during student appreciation day. Hopefully, it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle that incoming transfer interior offensive lineman, Seth McLaughlin, lost his black stripe.

McLaughlin became a Buckeye via the transfer portal from Alabama and most expected to hear more positive news sooner or later about the expected starting center. Now that his black stripe has been removed, maybe we start to hear some more hype about the former Tide pivot. It is also of note that incoming transfer quarterback, Will Howard, was also able to shed his black stripe today.

Will Howard loses black stripe

Another black stripe was removed this spring and this time it was transfer quarterback, Will Howard. The former Kansas State, now Buckeye gunslinger, earned the right to remove the black stripe during Saturday’s student appreciation day.

It makes sense that Howard was able to remove his stripe as my X, formerly Twitter feed is filled with electrifying plays being made including a 60-yard bomb to another incoming transfer, Quinshon Judkins. There were some rumblings that Howard was struggling at the start of spring practices but he has settled in with each passing day.

Most expect Howard to be the starting quarterback on opening day and this is a good sign for that camp.

Running back Quinshon Judkins has black stripe removed

Another highly talented transfer had his black stripe removed on Tuesday. #GoBucks

We’ve got another black strip alert that occurred during a spring practice session on Tuesday. We already told you about All-American transfer Caleb Downs receiving the honor, but on the same day, star Ole Miss running back transfer Quinshon Judkins also shed his black stripe and ceremonially became an official part of the Buckeye “brotherhood.”

It’s a new world for Judkins coming in as arguably the best running back in the SEC, and now he’s got a new home in Scarlet and Gray. During the brief ceremony, Judkins seemed excited and ready to get to work.

Ay, ya’ll, I appreciate everybody getting me better bro,” Judkins told teammates “I couldn’t do it without y’all. I’m happy to be in the best place in America bro. Go Bucks!”

We’ll continue to keep an eye on any further players that shed their black stripes as we continue to traverse 2024 spring practice at the Woody.

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith sheds black stripe

Ultra talented Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith set a record on Thursday for the fastest a Buckeye has ever shed his black stripe.

Ohio State freshman wide receiver, Jeremiah Smith, had his black stripe removed on Thursday. He breaks a record for the earliest a Buckeye has ever shed his black stripe after just four spring practices.

There are high hopes amongst Buckeye nation that Smith will have a great career at Ohio State as the young wide receiver has already lots of praise from teammates.

Check out what star cornerback Denzel Burke had to say about after a spring practice earlier this month.

“This might be a big statement, but just the way he handles himself and the way he moves and the potential he has, I feel like he might be the next best receiver to come through here.  And I’m really excited to see what he can do.  The sky’s the limit for him.”

Smith is one of highest rated recruits that the Buckeyes have ever landed at any position. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound wide receiver out of Chaminade-Madonna Prep High School in Florida, was the top ranked player in the 2024 class on trusted recruiting resources like On3, 247Sports, and Rivals.

The Buckeyes have recruited and developed wide receivers extremely well in recent memory under Brian Hartline. In the last two draft classes, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have been first round picks and Marvin Harrison Jr. is likely to be a top five in this class. Smith has all the makings to add his name to that list.

Ohio State cornerback loses black stripe

Ohio State cornerback loses black stripe #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team is still progressing and improving and another freshman is the most recent to earn the right to remove their black stripe. Freshman cornerback, Ryan Turner, is a former four-star prospect who was an early enrollee and was finally able to remove the black stripe as the team was preparing for the Wisconsin Badgers this week.

Turner was a consensus top 50 cornerback in this class and joins his corner classmate Jyaire Brown as freshmen who have shed the black stripe. Brown earned the honor during fall camp. Freshman wide receiver Kojo Antwi earned the honor last week and this makes Turner the second player to lose their back stripe on Thursday, with Hero Kanu also receiving the honor.

Running back Evan Pryor loses his black stripe

Another Buckeye running back lost his black stripe on Saturday! How will Pryor factor into the plans in the future?

We’ve got yet another black stripe alert for Ohio State, as freshman running back Evan Pryor received the honor on Saturday.

At 5-foot, 10-inches, and 190-pounds, Pryor was a 4-star commit in the 2021 class rated as the No. 6 running back and 83rd overall prospect in the class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He wasn’t as ballyhooed as the TreVeyon Henderson, but he’s got a skill set that should still translate to big-time college football.

By having his black stripe removed, Pryor is now considered to be an “official” Buckeye after arriving in the spring as an early enrollee.

“I want to thank all of you all for pushing me, be the best me every day — you know — holding me accountable, not only on the field but off the field,” Pryor said. “Shoutout tote nation, shoutout quarterbacks, keeping me in line. Go Bucks!”

Here’s to wishing Pryor success in a Buckeye uniform. Not only does he add depth to the running back room, but he’s got the talent to become one of the featured guys in the offense down the road.

Ohio State football spring 2021 black-stripe removal tracker

Ohio State football had quite a few freshmen lose their black stripes this spring. Here’s a look at all of them in one place.

It’s a rather new tradition, but one that has been embraced and is now fully a part of the culture of the Ohio State football program. It started under Urban Meyer and continues through to this day under Ryan Day, the removal of a newcomer’s black stripe affixed to the iconic silver helmets.

It’s become a right of passage in many ways. Though a prospect signs on the dotted line and enrolls at OSU, even taking part in practices, until the kid does enough on the field and beyond with what the program embodies, he is not given the ceremony of removing the black stripe. Once it happens though, it’s a glorious moment and the player “officially” becomes a part of the Ohio State program.

Despite the tradition only being part of the program for about nine years now, it’s become a revered one with the program playing each one up on social media.

We’ve actually seen quite a few freshmen shed their black stripe already in the spring, so we’re beginning our efforts at keeping track of all of them a little earlier than normal. We’ll have another look in the fall, but for now, here’s where things stand.

Black Stripe Alert: Ohio State linebacker Reid Carrico sheds black stripe

Ohio State linebacker Reid Carrico is living a lifelong dream playing for the Buckeyes. He shed his black stripe on Tuesday.

Not only was Reid Carrico a highly touted recruit at linebacker, but growing up in Ironton, Ohio, he’s been a lifelong Ohio State fan. Now this young man can officially call himself a Buckeye after losing his black stripe earlier Tuesday.

Carrico comes to OSU as a top 100 player in the nation according to the 247 Sports composite ratings, and the No. 5 inside linebacker in the country. From the sounds of things, he’s had one heck of a spring and looking to make some noise in the fall.

“Hey man, it’s an honor to be here. I grew up a Buckeye fan. I want to thank all you guys. Thank H2. All the strength coaches. Go Bucks!” Carrico shared.

Talk about a dream coming true. To grow up an Ohio State fan and then be able to wear the scarlet and gray… Carrico has to be feeling on top of the world.

Black Stripe Alert: Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka becomes official Buckeye

Another Ohio State football freshman became an official member of the team. 5-star eceiver Emeka Egbuka shed his black stripe on Tuesday.

The Ohio State football team welcomed its newest member to Zone 6 earlier today when Emeka Egbuka had his black stripe removed. You may remember that Egbuka was a five-star recruit out of the state of Washington and the No. 1 ranked wide receiver in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Egbuka becomes the second receiver to shed the black strip after teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. did the same last week. Egbuka was excited to receive the honor and looking forward to big things as a Buckeye.

“Just appreciate ya’ll for taking me in as a brother. Shoutout to all the coaches. Shoutout to Zone 6. Let’s keep working. Go Bucks!” Egbuka shared with his teammates.

It was said of Egbuka that he comes in early and stays late to get in extra work. Those are the kind of guys you want on your team. We’re looking forward to seeing what this highly-rated young man can do on the football field.
