Notre Dame release its depth chart for Navy, without a player that should play

The Irish should see a starter back that wasn’t listed this week

Notre Dame head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] met with the media on Monday afternoon to discuss the win over Georgia Tech and preview this weekend’s contest against Navy.

Although the Irish released their depth chart ahead of Freeman speaking, he revealed offensive lineman [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag] would play in some capacity against the Midshipmen. Wide receiver [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag] is listed as a starter, but he didn’t record a catch against the Yellow Jackets. He is working his way back to full strength following an injury suffered earlier in the year.

Kicker [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag] is still listed as the No. 1 place kicker and kickoff specialist, but at the moment he is questionable. Don’t be surprised to see Zac Yoakam out there if the starter can’t go, just like this past weekend.

Defensively, there weren’t any changes, as the Irish finally avoided having a week where they lost a significant contributor on that side of the ball.

It seems Notre Dame is trending to be as healthy as it can be against Navy this weekend, which clearly is a good development.

Notre Dame will get one starter back for Navy, but one is still questionable

The Irish are getting healthy, but with some question marks

This season the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have battled a rash of injuries.

Already done for the season are multiple starters, including offensive tackle Charles Jagusah, defensive linemen Jordan Botelho and Boubacar Traore and star cornerback Benjamin Morrison.

Luckily, offensive lineman [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag]’s injury wasn’t the season-ending variety. [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] let everyone know Schrauth will be back this weekend. The question is what kind of role will he have. That is yet to be determined and will be based off practice this week.

Kicker [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag], who sat out this past weekend’s game, is still questionable for the contest against Navy. He warmed up, but was unable to see the field due to his groin injury.

Both players are important for the Irish. The hope is they will have enough time this week to get fully healthy and help Notre Dame get its seventh win for the year on Saturday.

Marcus Freeman updates injuries to Jordan Botelho, Ashton Craig, Billy Schrauth and more

Not great news for a few Irish starters

On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman had bad news about all of the players that suffered injuries against Purdue.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]Ashton Craig[/autotag] are lost for the year due to knee injuries. It was reported earlier that Botelho most likely would be out for the remainder of the season, which unfortunately turned out to be correct.

There was some good injury news as well, as wide receiver [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag] will be full go this weekend. Defensive lineman [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] is questionable, and offensive lineman [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag], the third player hurt against the Boilermakers, is expected to miss a few weeks.

Notre Dame offensive lineman Ashton Craig participates in a drill during a Notre Dame football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, in South Bend.

It wasn’t the news we wanted to hear, but it was somewhat expected. The Irish have had to battle on the field this year, along with in the training room.

Notre Dame football lost three starters in first half vs. Purdue to injury

The big lead masked more Irish injuries

While Notre Dame dominated on the field against Purdue in the first half, it wasn’t without some losses.

First it was starting offensive lineman [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag] going down, then returning without his pads on crutches with a boot on his right ankle. Then in a matter of a few plays midway through the second quarterback, defensive lineman [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]Ashton Craig[/autotag] also got bit by the injury bug.

It looked like the defenders was much worse, as he was carted off the field as we await any update. As for Craig, he did walk off on his own power, but any sort of injury should keep him on the sidelines for the rest of this contest with a 42-0 halftime lead.

It’s another big blow on the injury front for Notre Dame, as they already lost projected starting tackle Charles Jagusah for the year and wide receiver Jordan Faison warmed up, but didn’t seem to return from his ankle injury.

Notre Dame football loses starting offensive lineman for the season

The Irish’s offensive line depth will be challenged

Coming out of [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag]’s bye week, head coach Marcus Freeman brought some bad news with him in his session with the media.

Freeman announced the starting right guard [autotag]Rocco Spindler[/autotag] will be out the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. The Irish social media account was quick to action, as they made a change to the depth chart for this weekends game against Wake Forest.

Sophomore [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag] will get the start in Spindler’s place, and the hope is that the transition will be fairly seamless. He has played this season, although not in a starting role.

Schrauth was the No. 5 interior offensive lineman and 169th overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings as a recruit.

247Sports: Notre Dame in the mix for nations top 2023 offensive tackle

If Freeman and Hiestand pull this one off…. WOW

For many years the Irish held the mantle of [autotag]O-Line U[/autotag] and although recently there has been a slight lull in production, they could very well be taking back the title. On the current roster, three offensive linemen, tackles [autotag]Blake Fisher[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Alt[/autotag] along with center [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag] will be drafted high when they declare to the NFL.

Of the 2022 recruiting class, [autotag]Billy Schrauth[/autotag], [autotag]Joey Tanona[/autotag], [autotag]Ty Chan[/autotag] and [autotag]Aamil Wagner[/autotag] were some of the most highly thought of signees, each of them will start their careers on the o-line as well. The 2023 class already has commitments from [autotag]Sullivan Absher[/autotag] and [autotag]Sam Pendleton[/autotag], but [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] is still looking for the headliner of the offensive line.

Enter Massachusetts’ [autotag]Samson Okunlola[/autotag], a six-foot-six-inch and 295-pound future star. He’s viewed as a five-star prospect and 247Sports Brian Dohn believes that the Irish are one of the few teams that realistically have a shot at landing Okunlola’s eventual signature.

It won’t be easy for returning offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag], as Penn State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Texas A&M, Oregon, Florida, and Pittsburgh were also mentioned as potential destinations for Okunlola as well.

Dohn, however gives the Irish a fighting chance, due to “the academics, the idea of what the degree means on a national level after graduation and playing at a prestigious school are all things that could resonate” with the mammoth tackle. What isn’t in the Irish’s favor however was that Okunlola has very to visit South Bend and didn’t stop by during his spring visit to the Midwest.

As Dohn mentions that Okunlola will take visits later in the year and most likely very few will be during the season due to his high school playing all their games on Saturday’s. Either way, Freeman and Hiestand are in for quite a battle for the tackles eventual signature, but one where they currently are seen as having a legit shot at.

Where the Notre Dame 2022 recruiting class ranked according to the experts

It was a solid “first” cycle for Freeman

It was once called Christmas in February, when there was not an early signing period in college football. When it first started, no one really knew what to expect, but after the first one in 2017, the precedence was set.

The majority of athletes would go on to sign in December, making the first Wednesday in February not nearly as exciting. That was exactly the case for Notre Dame, who entered the day with 21 commits and will finish the day with the same number.

Even though there wasn’t much excitement, there Irish still finished among the top class in the county and here is where they ranked according to 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals.

A few Notre Dame signee’s impressing at All-American Bowl

The future is bring for these two incoming Irish players

The All-American Bowl was played this weekend and it isn’t always about how the player performs during the game, it is an all-star game where many don’t get the opportunity to make an impact like they normally would.

To me, it’s the practices that are important, it’s the reps against players who will be the next starts of college football. With that said, it does seem like a few future Notre Dame players turned some heads during the practice portion.

According to a report from 247Sports Gabe Brooks, offensive lineman Billy Schrauth and wide receiver Tobias Merriweather were standouts during practice. They didn’t make Brooks’ top list, but getting an honorable mention is still impressive.

Unfortunately, there was a former Irish commit, wide receiver CJ Williams was one of Brooks’ standouts, as he committed to USC during the game. This now makes it an even bigger loss as Williams commits to a rival program.

Scouts view: Notre Dame’s newest commitment OL Billy Schrauth

Where will Schrauth end up?

The Irish scored big in commitment, literally and figuratively when Wisconsin lineman Billy Schrauth pledged yesterday, making it the first of Marcus Freeman’s tenure. The six-foot-five-inch and 300-pound lineman chose the Irish over offers from Ohio State, Wisconsin, Auburn, Michigan, Oregon and others.

The commitment is the 23rd of the 2022 class, giving the Irish a firm grasp on a Top-5 class as we inch towards the early signing period. It’s a big time win for the Irish, as they gained an athlete that has a ton of potential. Here is my scout’s view of what to expect from Schrauth when he arrives on campus.

First off, he’s extremely long and athletic, Schrauth could very well end up as a tackle, on the right side, but more likely will slide in as a guard. If he does stick there, his mauling style will play very well in the run game. Schrauth is fast on his feet, moves better than you would think for a player his size.

What is interesting on Schrauth’s film is his ability to make plays as a defensive lineman as well. I will say that if he is unable to crack the starting lineup on the offensive side, he very well could slide over to the other side of the ball. The length plays again, as does the impressive movement for a big man.

Wherever Schrauth ends up, it’s a win for the Irish. Not only did Freeman beat out instate Wisconsin but the other Midwest powers in Ohio State and Michigan. A great recruiting start for the new Notre Dame head coach.

Notre Dame lands big-time Wisconsin commitment

Notre Dame lands a massive offensive lineman recruit!

The first Notre Dame commitment during the Marcus Freeman head coaching era is in and it’s a big one.  Interior offensive lineman Billy Schrauth of St. Mary’s Springs (Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin) announced his commitment to Notre Dame on Friday morning making him the 23rd commitment in the class.

Schrauth chose Notre Dame over a couple of midwest powers as Ohio State and Wisconsin were viewed as the other top contenders.  Schrauth is rated as a four-star prospect according to 247Sports and as the nation’s ninth best interior offensive lineman this cycle.

Schrauth is listed at 6-5, 300-pounds and was named to the All-American Bowl roster earlier this year.
