Bills WR John Brown out Saturday vs. Broncos

Buffalo Bills WR John Brown will not play in Week 15 vs. the Denver Broncos.

Bills wide receiver John Brown will not play in Week 15 against the Broncos. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott appeared on his weekly segment on WGR-550 radio and announced the decision.

Brown, 30, landed on injured reserve following the Bills’ bye week in Week 11 due to an ankle injury. On Tuesday, Brown did begin practicing with the Bills (10-3) as he was designated to return from injured reserve on Tuesday.

However that did not mean Brown was immediately play in Denver (5-8) on Saturday.

When were Josh Allen, Drew Lock teammates?

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock prior to Week 15.

The NFL is very much a fraternity type of place. We always see the same coaches and players switching places all over the league. But these relationships start early and for Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Broncos quarterback Drew Lock it started when they were teammates.

But wait, where were they teammates?

Allen, the Firebaugh farmer from California took the scenic route to the NFL via Wyoming. The swag-filled Lock learned the ropes as a Missouri guy through and through, attending Mizzou.

So, again, teammates?

Spike ball teammates, that is.

Prior to the two facing off on Saturday’s Week 15 showdown at Mile High between the Broncos (5-8) and Bills (10-3), Lock discussed Allen in an interview with CBS Denver and disclosed their relationship as partners during the two-against-two based game.

It’s known in western New York that Allen works out with QB “guru” Jordan Palmer during the offseason, but he’s not alone. A couple guys in the NFL do, Lock among them. Denver’s quarterback disclosed the fun they’ve shared as teammates earlier this week:

Naturally the two will be battling this weekend, but expect to see a nice pre-and-postgame hug shared between these guys.

If it’s any consolation prize, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is another guy who’s known to workout with Palmer & Co. during the offseason. Sounds like Darnold just can’t catch a break…

But Allen did also discussed Lock on Wednesday via video conference, and echoed Lock. The two are buds, and confirmed that Lock has him in the swag category.

“We get along really well and we have a good time when we’re together,” Allen said. “He’s a talented player, he’s starting to put it together now, he’s extremely fun to watch. He’s a really good buddy of mine.

I will say this, he’s a 10 times better dancer than I am.”

For what it’s worth, the former (spike ball) teammates will be facing off for the first time as well. Last season, the Bills topped the Broncos, 20-3, however, the then-rookie in Lock was on injured reserve at the time with a thumb injury.

8 storylines to watch for during Bills at Broncos

Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos storylines to watch in Week 15.

It’s Wednesday so the Buffalo Bills are now turning their attention to their next opponent. After a primetime win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Bills will head back out west one more time to face the Denver Broncos (5-8) at Mile High, again on primetime, of sorts. The game was flexed to a Saturday kickoff.

With that, here are eight storylines to follow this week as the Bills (10-3) are set to face the Broncos in Week 15:

Who the Bills protected on their practice squad for Week 15

Buffalo Bills practice squad protection ahead of Week 15 vs. Broncos.

The Bills announced their Week 15 players the team has placed on the protected portion of their practice squad via the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday ahead of their game with the Denver Broncos (5-8) on Saturday.

Since signing wide receiver Jake Kumerow to the team’s 53-man roster, the Bills have consistently protected the same guys on their practice squad the past two weeks. But now we have one change. Defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. out and defensive back Josh Thomas in.

Here’s the full list of player protected on the Bills’ practice squad this upcoming week:

  • OL Jordan Devey
  • OL Jonotthan Harrison
  • DB Josh Thomas
  • LB Darron Lee

There’s currently no real reason for the switch, just some speculation can be made. Cox was a player the Bills had protected on the practice squad in the early portions of the season, however, once unprotected, he was never poached by another team. The Bills (10-3) might just be assuming they can make the switch to Thomas without worrying about Cox.

The reasoning for the switch might also be some depth concerns. Safety Jaquan Johnson has been sidelined with an ankle injury recently and he’s a key special teams contributor. As is Taron Johnson, who is Buffalo’s starting slot cornerback.

On defense, Thomas would likely not see reps there without Johnson in the lineup, however, he could be used on special teams and was in Week 10 against the Cardinals. That week the Bills had four players called up from their practice squad on an emergency basis and Thomas was one of them.

For more info on the PS protections, check out our previous explanation on the “protected” practice squad situation, a new addition to the NFL this season, from our Week 1 coverage here:

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the NFL’s owners and players came to an offseason agreement that we’ve seen the first installment of on Tuesday evening. Each team in the league can “protect” four players on their practice squad each week.

The idea is to provide some extra depth for teams in case of a COVID-19 outbreak in a locker room late in the week prior to a Sunday or Monday game. Those four can be called up to the active roster up until Sunday morning prior to kickoff every week.

Bills designate WR John Brown to return from IR

Buffalo Bills move John Brown on injured reserve designation.

The Bills have designated wide receiver John Brow to return from the team’s injured reserve list on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transactions list.

The move comes as little surprise because Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott said on Monday via video conference that Brown would practice in some fashion this week. Brown wouldn’t be allowed to do so without this latest news.

“He will practice this week and we’ll see how it goes,” McDermott said.

Buffalo (10-3) travels to Denver to play the Broncos (5-8) on Saturday.

The Bills  have 21 days from Tuesday until they need to activate Brown fully from injured reserve, by NFL rules. If they do not, Brown automatically reverts back to the IR for the remainder of the season. So in that window, Brown can still miss game time, therefore his status for playing against the Broncos is still up in the air.

Here’s our previous coverage on Brown practicing this week from Monday:

John Brown to return to practice this week for Bills

John Brown to return to practice this week for Bills

Buffalo Bills WR John Brown to practice ahead of facing Denver Broncos in Week 15.

The Bills have gone 3-0 following their bye week and have scored an average of 29 points on offense in that stretch. Now that unit could be getting a boost this week ahead of facing the Broncos on Saturday.

According to Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott, wide receiver John Brown will return to practice this week.

“He will practice this week and we’ll see how it goes,” McDermott said via video conference on Monday.

So far in 2020, Brown has struggled mightily due to a series of injuries, most recently the ankle injury which landed him on IR following Buffalo’s bye week. This season Brown only has 29 catches for 386 yards after putting up 72 for 1,060 last season.

While the Bills (10-3) have not yet officially declared Brown as a player designated to return from injured reserve this week, that move could be en route soon. Once that happens, that does not mean that Brown will play vs. the Broncos (5-8).

The Bills will have 21 days until they need to activate him from the point of him bring designated to return or else he automatically returns to the team’s IR.

In terms of Brown coming off of IR prior to the Broncos meeting, that’d most likely happen the day before the game on Friday. It does sound like Brown could be out there sooner rather than later, though.

Bills-Broncos Week 15 meeting slated for Saturday

Buffalo Bills & Denver Broncos Week 15 game will occur on Saturday.

The Buffalo Bills’ Week 15 game is no longer considered a to be determined kickoff.

According to various reports on Tuesday, the Bills (7-3) and Denver Broncos (4-6) will have a 4:30 p.m. start time on Saturday of that weekend on December 19. The game was originally released this past offseason as a “TBD” time slot.

Last season, the Bills had a similar flex, as their meeting in Pittsburgh against the Steelers was moved to a Saturday. That game saw the Bills win 17-10 via a late touchdown pass from Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen to tight end Tyler Kroft.

But, a curveball: So far in 2020, the Broncos have played the Jets, Patriots and most recently, the Dolphins. Denver is 3-0 against AFC East opponents so far this year.

Report: Broncos targeting Bills CB Kevin Johnson

The Broncos have interest in adding cornerback Kevin Johnson, it was reported by 9News in Denver on Tuesday.

The Broncos have interest in adding cornerback Kevin Johnson, it was reported by 9News in Denver on Tuesday. The former first-round pick of the Texans played on a one-year deal with the Bills last year.

Johnson had a long list of injuries with the Texans, but managed to stay healthy with the Bills in 2019, appearing in all 16 games. Johnson provided a depth role, but also pushed fellow cornerback Levi Wallace for his starting job. The two, at times, split playing time with Wallace getting slightly more.

With that rotation in mind, he did only play in 32 percent of the Bills’ defensive snaps last season.

It’s unlikely Johnson would re-sign with the Bills considering their depth at the position with Tre’Davious White, Taron Johnson, Wallace and the recently added Josh Norman.

But if Johnson sticks around the market for awhile and doesn’t land a suitor, there could be a depth spot for him in Buffalo. The Broncos may provide a better chance at more significant playing time, though.

Report: Bills showing interest in CB Chris Harris Jr.

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Bills were name one of four teams that are “showing interest” in cornerback Chris Harris.

In a surprise twist, are the Bills still interested in adding to their secondary even further despite adding Josh Norman last week?

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Bills were name one of four teams that are “showing interest” in cornerback Chris Harris. While the Bills could use more depth in their secondary even with Norman’s addition to a positional group which also involves Tre’Davious White and Levi Wallace, Harris is no backup.

The 30-year-old is among one of the best cornerback slated to hit the open market. Spotrac estimates his value at $11 million per season. NFL.com ranked him as the 23rd best pending free agent earlier this offseason.

Perhaps the Bills’ “interest” in Harris predates Buffalo signing Norman last week? It would be quite the shocker if the Bills added Harris, considering White is in-line for a payday of his own, too.

On Harris, he’s only missed five games in nine seasons, all spent with the Broncos. He’s started 121 of 139 career games and has 518 tackles, 20 interceptions and six forced fumbles. A good player, but seems unlikely, especially since, if an accurate report, four teams are interested in him, so there will be a bidding war of sorts.

Those other three potential landing spots are the Cowboys, Jets and Raiders.
