The other finalists are Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.

The winner of the AP Rookie of the Year award will be announced at the NFL honors ceremony on February 8.

Career stats for every RB drafted in the 1st round since 2000

NFL Draft History: From Jamal Lewis to Bijan Robinson, we look at every RB drafted in the first round since 2000

The Atlanta Falcons went against conventional thinking in the 2023 NFL draft by selecting running back Bijan Robinson in the top 10. While we don’t see teams take running backs in the first round nearly as much these days, all bets are off when the right prospect comes along.

The Detroit Lions selected Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs four spots later at pick No. 12. Both Robinson and Gibbs excelled as rookies, going over 1,000 all-purpose yards for their respective teams.

Now that the 2023 NFL season is over, here’s a look at the career stats for every running back drafted in the first round since the year 2000.

Falcons fire head coach Arthur Smith after three straight 7-win seasons

The Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Arthur Smith on Sunday night, and it’s not as if Smith gave owner Arthur Blank any other choice.

America’s purest successor to Jeff Fisher has been asked to find employment elsewhere. The Atlanta Falcons have fired head coach Arthur Smith after three straight seven-win seasons, and little progress along the way.

“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” team owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. “We have profound respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all the hard work and dedication he has put into the Falcons over the last three years. He has been part of building a good culture in our football team, but the results on the field have not met our expectations. After significant thought and reflection, we have determined the best way forward for our team is new leadership in the head coaching position.”

Per the team:

The search for a new head coach of the Falcons will begin immediately. It will be led by Blank and McKay, with input from Falcons General Manager Terry Fontenot, and several other appropriate members of Blank’s Atlanta Falcons and AMB Sports and Entertainment organizations. There is no timetable for filling the role.

The Falcons have brought multiple first-round talents on offense during Smith’s tenure, and he could never quite figure out what to do with any of them. Tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson have been three of the NFL’s most camouflaged skill position players, and the only person who was able to stop them consistently was Smith, who seemed bound and determined to show how creative he could be with lesser players, to ill effect most of the time.

In the end, Smith’s fate was likely sealed by four losses in the last five games in the 2023 season, capped off by a 48-17 beatdown at the hands of the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

America reacts to Arthur Smith’s unhappiness with the Saints’ late touchdown

Before that game, the Falcons ranked 21st in Offensive DVOA, and that was supposed to be Smith’s baby. Atlanta ranked 31st in Offensive DVOA in 2022 and 31st in 2021, so if you want to peer through rose-colored glasses, you could say that this year’s Falcons were a little bit better. But if you watch the tape, you know that this was a hopeless endeavor, especially given how Smith mishandled the quarterback situation.

“Sure, as I’ve said many times, we know the industry that we’re in,” Smith said after the Saints loss, when asked whether he wanted to keep his job. “I love doing what I’m doing. Also, like I’ve told you many times, this is the industry that we are in. I love coaching. I would have loved to win today. Obviously, we didn’t.”

Sadly, Smith left Blank no rational choice for the future of his team.

2024 NFL draft order: Falcons secure top-10 draft pick for fourth straight year

The Atlanta Falcons are headed for another top-10 draft pick following Sunday’s 48-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s season finale. After drafting Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson in consecutive years, perhaps the Falcons will finally splurge and take a quarterback.

Bryce Young nominated for Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week

Panthers QB Bryce Young has been nominated for Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week honors.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young impressed more than just the shipping industry in Week 16.

To the delight of one of the world’s beverage giants, Young’s career performance this past Sunday has landed him a nomination for Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. His 312-yard passing day also has him up for FedEx Air Player of the Week honors.

Young, in Sunday’s 33-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers, broke the 300-yard mark for the first time as a pro. Overall, he completed 23 of his 36 throws with two touchdowns, no interceptions and two other career-highs in passing yards per attempts (8.7) and passer rating (110.0).

The 22-year-old, however, made the outing about “we,” not “me.”

“Really, I think it’s as good as we’ve looked as a unit,” he told reporters after the game. “Whatever stats or whatever may say, you point at one person and say it’s a good game—it’s all of us. It was a good building block for us as a unit. And that’s all 11—and plus with all the substitutions, of course. We all stepped up.”

The No. 1 overall pick faces a stiff field of competition that includes running backs Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, wide receiver Puka Nacua, linebacker YaYa Diaby and defensive back Brian Branch.

Falcons Twitter reacts to Arthur Smith getting fined by NFL

Falcons Twitter reacts to Arthur Smith getting fined by NFL for injury report violation

On Friday, the NFL handed out fines to both the Atlanta Falcons and head coach Arthur Smith for violating the injury report policy during the team’s Week 7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Falcons were fined $75,000 while Smith was fined another $25,000 for failing to accurately disclose running back Bijan Robinson‘s injury status. Robinson received just one carry in Week 7 due to what he described as a severe headache.

Smith hasn’t been the most forthcoming when it comes to injuries this season, and Friday’s fine is just the latest example. Fans on Twitter had a lot to say about Smith’s lack of transparency, with some calling it a fireable offense.

Fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em: Week 16

Check out these starts and sits for fantasy football in Week 16.

The fantasy football playoffs are officially underway as just two more weeks remain in the season for the majority of leagues. Now, it’s time to look at some start/sit decisions for Week 16.

Doing start/sit articles can be a little challenging. The players featured on the list below should not be taken as “must starts” or “must sits.” Instead, these are more suggestions on what we believe managers should do with fringe players heading into the weekend. The choice is ultimately up to the manager.

Just because a player is listed as a “start” doesn’t mean he should be put in the lineup over the secure, bona fide studs. Vice versa for the “sits.” If there’s no better option on the waiver wire or the bench, a manager shouldn’t automatically sit the player. That’s why these can be tricky waters to navigate.
