Rutgers makes a strong impression in Big Ten Tournament loss

Rutgers basketball battles, falls short in the Big Ten Tournament to Purdue.

Rutgers proved that it not only deserves to be in the NCAA Tournament, but that it shouldn’t have to make a pitstop in Dayton to do so.
Friday’s 70-65 loss to Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament was as close to a moral victory as they come. For a Rutgers team that closed out the regular season with three losses in their last four games, they got some momentum back to their season during the conference tournament.
It was another strong effort from freshman Derek Simpson, who looked like a veteran in both Big Ten Tournament games that he played for Rutgers. Simpson led Rutgers with 18 points, adding in a team-high three steals to go along with two rebounds and an assist.
Down one at halftime, Rutgers held a 42-41 lead with 11:46 left in the game. Purdue would go on a 9-4 run, boosted by two successful three points shots by David Jenkins Jr.
While a win would have been the obvious ideal outcome for Rutgers, Friday’s performance on short rest against the Big Ten’s top team in the regular season should be enough to solidify their standing for the NCAA Tournament.
This isn’t a bubble team, not after these two performances in the Big Ten Tournament.

Rutgers casually notched a backdoor cover in final second of loss to Purdue

This seemingly meaningless bucket actually meant a lot to some.

The Rutgers men gave top-seeded Purdue all it could handle in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday.

At one point, the Scarlet Knights even held a 12-point lead over the No. 5 team in the country. In the end though, the game ended exactly how most suspected it would, with Purdue advancing.

Rutgers did give its bettors a reason to stick around to the very end, with the gave teetering over and under the 6.5-point spread for several minutes. And after a free throw put Purdue ahead by seven with nine second left, Rutgers hustled back down the other end to get a shot up and notch the cover on a put-back with exactly one second left.

Fans at the United Center went wild for the seemingly meaningless bucket. It didn’t give Rutgers a win, but it did make sure the team’s bettors came away with something.

Breaking: Ohio State star freshman out against Michigan State

Not great news #GoBucks

As Ohio State prepares to take on Michigan State on day 3 of the Big Ten Tournament, it received some bad news.

Star freshman [autotag]Brice Sensabaugh[/autotag] has been ruled out of the game due to knee soreness. It is a big blow for head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] and his Buckeyes, as they are going to have to replace their leading scorer (16.3 points) who also contributed 5.4 rebounds with 1.2 assists per game.

We do not know who will get the nod to take Sensabaugh’s spot in the starting lineup but one could guess it will be [autotag]Sean McNeil[/autotag] as he started multiple games throughout the season.

The Buckeyes and Spartans tip off at 2:30 p.m. ET from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Ohio State basketball vs. Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament: How to watch, stream the game

Ohio State moves and will face Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. #GoBucks

Survive and advance. Ohio State did exactly what it needed to do once again to keep moving on in the Big Ten Tournament. In a back-and-forth battle, the Buckeyes hit some big shots late in the game and made free throws down the stretch to come out on top of Iowa in round two.

OSU moves on to the quarterfinals to face Michigan State. Could Chris Holtmann’s team be peaking at the right time? If they are, they will have to prove it once again and play a complete game. The Spartans come into the matchup as a No. 4 seed and swept the season series against Ohio State.

It will be no easy task for the Bucks to move on, but it seems this team may be finally starting to put it all together. Strange things can happen when a team plays like it has nothing to lose. And this Ohio State team has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Here’s how to catch the tip-off of the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

Big Ten Tournament: Tip times, TV details, Predictions for each Quarterfinals game today

Prepare for a full day of games at the Big Ten Tournament with tip times, TV details and predictions for each game

Michigan State will make its debut at the 2023 Big Ten Tournament on Friday.

The Spartans will take on Ohio State in the mid-afternoon matchup, with the winner moving on to the semifinals on Saturday. The Spartans and Buckeyes just played a tightly contested battle last week so this should be another fun game at the already very exciting Big Ten Tournament.

Get all of your details and information for today’s games at the Big Ten Tournament below:

Rutgers basketball: How the win over Michigan impacts the Bracketology update from ESPN

Rutgers basketball seems to have solidified their NCAA Tournament outlook.

For Rutgers basketball, 62-50 win over Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament was good news for the Scarlet Knights. It puts Rutgers as one of the last four teams into the tournament according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

And if playing in the ‘First Four’ is the basement for Rutgers, that is good news given the slide the team has been on the past month. Coming into this week’s Big Ten Tournament, Rutgers had lost three of their last four games.

In his Bracketology update on Thursday evening (several hours after Rutgers’ win over Michigan), ESPN analyst Joe Lunardi has Rutgers as a No. 11 seed, with them projected to play No. 11 Utah State in the play-in game.

The projection from Lunardi has Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament but not in the field proper for what would be a second straight season.

On Thursday at noon, Rutgers is playing Purdue, the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament. A win would certainly upgrade the NCAA Tournament outlook for the Scarlet Knights but even a close, tightly contested game would likely put Rutgers in a strong position to make the field.

Purdue is a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to Lunardi.

Penn State, who beat Illinois in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, are also included in Lunardi’s ‘Last Four In.’ They are projected to play No. 11 Oklahoma State in a play-in game.

Michigan is not in Lunardi’s projections and are the ‘Next Four Out.’

Big Ten Tournament: Juwan Howard praises Rutgers’ defensive intensity and the play of Cliff Omoruyi

Rutgers basketball dominated Michigan defensively in the second half.

Rutgers basketball got a huge win for their NCAA Tournament hopes, the Scarlet Knights piecing together perhaps their best half of the season on Thursday in a 62-50 win over Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

It was a win that could well solidify Rutgers, the ninth seed in the conference tournament, as an NCAA Tournament team.

Michigan held a 28-25 lead at halftime but Rutgers went to another level in the second half, limiting the Wolverines to a 1-for-17 shooting start to the second half. In the entire second half, Michigan made just four baskets.

The defensive effort did not go unnoticed by Juwan Howard. The Michigan head coach cited that the defensive tenacity shown by Rutgers in the second half of his team’s loss is a hallmark of the program under head coach Steve Pikiell.

“Rutgers is one of the best defensive teams in the Big Ten and also as well as in the country. One of the things that they’re missing obviously is one of their players – a key player (Mawot Mag),” Howard told reporters after the game.

“But then overall, you know, you have to give Steve and his staff a lot of credit on how they have fought through adversity just like we have. And he’s also been a great leader, you know, to his team and his coaching staff. One of their biggest strengths that they lay their hat on is playing with effort and playing with toughness. And so that’s one of the things that we’ve always emphasized when we gameplan versus them is that you’re gonna get a team that’s going to play hard, every possession.

“And that’s led by Cliff (Omoruyi), their starting center. Their team feeds off his energy and as you can see in the second half, he was very active out there contesting shots, blocking shots, his presence in the middle affected us.”

Omoruyi finished with six points but had eight rebounds and three blocks.

Michigan shot just 34.8 percent from the floor in Thursday’s loss. They were outrebounded by Rutgers 37-30 and turned the ball over 14 times (Rutgers had nine turnovers.

They scored just 22 points in the second half including a 12-0 run by Rutgers midway through the second half.

Thoughts on Ohio State’s Round 2 win over Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament

The Buckeyes don’t want to go home #GoBucks

The unthinkable happened once again, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] advances in the [autotag]Big Ten Tournament[/autotag] as the No. 13 seed, defeating Iowa 73-69.

Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag]’s team played a very good game from start to finish, even though the Hawkeyes kept matching it and wouldn’t go away. The win, the 15th of the season, keeps the Buckeyes alive in the conference tournament, with Michigan State waiting for them Friday.

There was a lot to like about how Ohio State played today, but some of its issues reared their ugly heads once again and almost sent the Buckeyes back to Columbus. Find out my thoughts as OSU survives and advances in the Big Ten Tournament.

Early exit: Takeaways as Iowa exits Big Ten Tournament early with loss to Ohio State

The Hawkeyes are headed home early from the Big Ten Tournament after an underwhelming showing against Ohio State. The takeaways for Iowa.

Welp… that stunk.

That’s the takeaway. Don’t even both reading the rest of this story (please do still) because that’s the ultimate feeling that we’re all going to take away from this game. After embedding ourselves with some hope late in the season, two bad losses to Nebraska and Ohio State, that just knocked the Iowa Hawkeyes out of the Big Ten Tournament, have just given us all a big collective gut punch.

All of the bad things that we’ve seen from Iowa were on display in this one. They shot poorly from all areas away from the rim and were unable to reliably sink a jump shot. Meanwhile, Ohio State saw wide open shooters in the corners down the stretch only countered by half-hearted close-out attempts.

There was a general chaos around the team and especially so down the stretch. They weren’t able to find a groove or a sense of calm. Despite being supposedly the better side, they always felt like they were on their heels.

I have zero clue how this affects Iowa moving forward, nor do I really want to think about the future. This loss really really stinks. Here are five takeaways.
