Big Ten Power Rankings: Is MSU the worst team in the conference right now?

See how far Michigan State drops in our updated power rankings after another double-digit loss

Is Michigan State the worst team in the Big Ten? A few weeks ago I couldn’t imagine asking myself this question but that’s where things have gotten to in just a three-week span.

The Spartans dropped their third straight game on Saturday — this time at the hands of Maryland, 27-13. It was yet another double-digit loss and now has many fans — including myself — wondering if Michigan State will win another game this year.

Big Ten power rankings after Week 5: More clarity two weeks into conference play

Some drama in the Big Ten in Week 5!

We’re now, finally, onto strict conference play.

While many teams opened Big Ten season last week, some still had nonconference opponents in Week 4 due to having played Big Ten teams earlier in the season. No longer, as all 14 teams were in action on Saturday, with seven games matching all of the against each other.

Thus, we learned a lot more. Who’s good, who’s middling, and who’s flat-out bad. There were no ranked-on-ranked matchups, but there were some intriguing contests. Michigan at Iowa, Purdue at Minnesota, MSU at Maryland, and Illinois at Wisconsin come to mind, while Ohio State hosted Rutgers, Penn State hosted Northwestern, and Indiana had a night game at Nebraska.

Thus, there was a lot of movement, especially considering Minnesota’s loss. The Gophers were No. 2 last week, but some other teams managed to impress.

Michigan State dropped its first game of the season, with a blowout loss at Washington on Saturday night. The Spartans’ defense failed to pile up stops, creating a hole they simply couldn’t come back from.

Big Ten power rankings after Week 1 per PFF grades

Where does Wisconsin land?

It was a mixed week around the Big Ten during Week 1, as conference foes clashed and others opened with games they were expected to win.

Penn State and Purdue’s Thursday night battle alongside Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame highlighted what was a wild week throughout college football and the Big Ten conference.

Wisconsin cruised over Illinois State and earned a spot on this list that Badger fans will be happy about. The defense pitched a shutout while setting records, and Braelon Allen ripped off a 96-yard touchdown run to get things going offensively.

PFF graded overall performances for each Big Ten team, and here is how they stacked up:

Big Ten Power Rankings: Where do Spartans land after victory over Western Michigan in opener?

See where Michigan State lands in our updated power rankings following a season-opening victory over Western Michigan in Week 1

Everyone in the Big Ten has officially kicked off the 2022 season, and there were a lot of positives for each team in the league.

Week one is in the books and each Big Ten team has lined up and all but one has picked up a victory — sorry Purdue. Michigan State picked up a season-opening victory over Western Michigan but it wasn’t always pretty for the Spartans. So with that, will we see Michigan State drop in our updated power rankings or hold their spot as one of the top three teams in the league?

Jacob’s post-week 1 Big Ten Power Rankings

Our first full slate of games are in the books. Which way are Big Ten teams’ stocks trending and what are the post-week one power rankings?

Week one is in the books, and we have a bit of movement in the rankings. Most of the top teams in the Big Ten took the first week as a chance to gain roster cohesion and iron out the kinks against an inferior opponent. This worked for most, except one team and you better believe they plummeted in the rankings.

It was a great week for the Big Ten, the only two teams losing games were against fellow Big Ten competition. I would argue that two team’s “wins” against FCS opponents though are more akin to losses. Here are the post-week one Big Ten Power Rankings. For a side-by-side comparison, here are last week’s rankings.

Pre-Week 1 Big Ten football power rankings

Three Big Ten teams have a win or loss in the record books in 2022. After two games last week, here’s our week one Big Ten power rankings.

Week one is just days ahead, featuring a good mix of high end games and tune ups for those in the Big Ten. Three teams, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Illinois, have already kicked off their seasons, but the action really kicks off this week. Here is how the conference stacks up before the action starts.
