Wisconsin women’s basketball forward named Big Ten Player of the Week after 36-point outburst

Wisconsin women’s basketball forward Serah Williams earned Big Ten Player of the Week nods for the second time in her career on Monday.

The honor arrives five days after Williams notched a career-best performance in Wisconsin’s double-overtime victory over Butler in Indianapolis.

In that contest, the Brooklyn, New York native logged 36 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in 43 minutes of action. The star forward also shot 13-of-26 from the field and 10-of-12 from the foul line in the signature win.

Her 36 points were also the most in program history since the 2007-08 season, per UW Athletics.

Williams has been nothing short of dominant for the Badgers throughout the 2023-24 season. In 11 appearances, she is responsible for 19.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, three assists and 2.9 blocks in 31.5 minutes per game.

The junior forward also ranks No. 2 in the nation in rebounds per game behind LSU’s Aneesah Morrow, and No. 36 in points per game.

Marisa Moseley’s program now sits at 9-2 to start the season with a bevy of Big Ten games remaining on the schedule. UW returns to the court on Dec. 20 for a contest against UAlbany.

John Tonje pockets second consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor

John Tonje pockets second consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor

Wisconsin Badgers wing John Tonje earned Big Ten Player of the Week nods for the second straight week on Monday. The veteran is the first Badger to boast that feat since Johnny Davis in 2022.

The honor arrives one day after Tonje native fueled UW during its 2-0 run at the Greenbrier Tip-Off in West Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The transfer wing averaged 24 points and 6.5 rebounds en route to pocketing the event’s MVP honor. In the tournament’s finale, he dropped 33 points against Pittsburgh, 25 of which came in a tightly-contested second half.

Backed by his 23.0-point per game output, the Badgers are 7-0 for the first time since 2014-15 and boast the No. 15 position in the latest AP top 25 poll.

The former CSU Ram and Missouri Tiger is putting together arguably the best first few weeks of a season in program history. Through seven games, Tonje leads the nation in free throw percentage and ranks No. 9 in scoring. He’s also the first Division I player to score 33 or more points against two high-major opponents in November over the last 15 years, per UW Athletics.

In three wins last week, Tonje scored 67 total points on a 52.6% clip from the field and nearly 96% mark from the foul line.

He and the Badgers now return home for a Nov. 30 showdown against Chicago State before squaring off against Michigan on Dec. 3.

Brian Buschini named Big Ten Special Team Player of the Week

Brian Buschini had a gutsy performance on Saturday.

Nebraska football punter Brian Buschini was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after a strong performance on Saturday against Rutgers.

He recorded five total punts with a kicking average of 50.2 yards. He put two of those punts inside the 20. On top of this, he also showed his prowess as a passer. He completed one pass to wide receiver Jaylen LIoyd for 30 yards.

In addition to his statistical efforts, Buschini got hit early in the game and was clearly fighting through it throughout the day. He managed to recover quickly and proceeded to have a productive day. He was able to power through and contribute to the win on a day when field position was key.

This is the second Nebraska football player to win a weekly honor. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola won Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors back in September. In the meantime, Nebraska football is off to their best start since the 2016 season with a 5-1 record. Buschini undoubtedly has played a big part in that.

Ohio State sweeps Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week

Two Buckeyes swept the Big Ten’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week awards. #GoBucks

In the most recent years’ past, we seemed to be sharing this type of news on almost a weekly basis, but with a team still trying to figure things out a little bit, Ohio State hasn’t been a regular in the Big Ten football weekly awards.

That changed big time on Monday because the Buckeyes had a player named as the Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week after the win over Maryland. Both wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and safety Josh Proctor were recognized by the Big Ten after Week 6.

Harrison Jr. literally seemed to put the Ohio State offense on his back when there were issues moving the ball consistently. He finished with eight receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown (twice on one if you follow me and watched the game). It was Harrison’s third 100-yard receiving game of the season. The effort tied him with Garrett Wilson and Michael Jenkins with 10 total career games with 100 yards or more. Believe it or not, it is Harrison’s first ever Big Ten Player of the Week award (thanks C.J. Stroud).

Proctor had a huge day on defense. Not only did he register Ohio State’s first score of the game with a crucial, momentum halting “pick six” with OSU down by a touchdown, but he also recorded a career high seven tackles, six of them being solo and 1.5 as a tackle for loss. It too, is Proctor’s first Defensive Player of the Week award.

Congrats to both. The Buckeyes last recognition in both of these areas came from C.J. Stroud (Offensive POW) on Nov. 14, 2022, and J.T. Tuimoloau (Defensive POW) on Oct. 31, 2022.

Two Wisconsin Badgers earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors

Two Wisconsin Badgers earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors

While Wisconsin started the season slow, the team has not been without some tremendous individual performers.

Two of those players have been Wisconsin kicker Collin Larsh and inside linebacker Leo Chenal.

Larsh is off to a tremendous start with a 16/17 clip on extra-point attempts and 10/12 on field goals—one miss coming from a Penn State block.

Meanwhile, Chenal is putting together an All-Big Ten caliber season. He has 51 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in only five games.

MSU kicker Matt Coghlin earns Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honor

Matt Coghlin is the Big Ten’s Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after making his fourth career game winning field goal.

[jwplayer uZffHiR1-PROpJzTY]

Matt Coghlin showed up in a familiar way once again in Michigan State’s Saturday afternoon upset over Northwestern. The senior kicker drained three field goals from 22, 44 and 48-yards to help push the Spartans past the Wildcats. This is Coghlin’s third multi field goal game of the season.

A 48-yard field goal with 2:47 left in the game was the game winner for the Spartans. This would be the fourth career game-winning field goal for Coghlin in his time in East Lansing.

Another great outing from the senior kicker has earned him a Big Ten weekly award in the form of Co-Special Teams Player of the Week with Iowa’s kicker Keith Duncan.

This is the third time in Coghlin’s career he will be taking home this honor. He was also the last Spartan to win this honor for his performance against Indiana in the fall of 2018.
