My wife ranks the Big Ten helmets

My wife is back and this time we’re looking at helmets!!

Welcome back, previously, we’ve seen my wife rank Big Ten mascots and uniforms here on Cornhusker wire, and she’s returned once again. Today we’ll be taking a look at Big Ten helmets. The helmet is, without a doubt, the most identifiable marking of any college football program. But, unfortunately, there’s so much variety nowadays that we sometimes forget that each program has its own traditional look.

Buckle up and get ready because we’re not only in for an exciting list, but we’re sure to have a funny comment or two along the way. So please sit back, relax, begin scrolling, and check out my wife’s rankings of Big Ten helmets. It can’t be any stranger than the uniform list.

Iowa Hawkeyes football helmets through the years

What did the Iowa Hawkeyes’ helmets look like before the Tigerhawk logo and what wrinkles have they seen along the way?

Among college sports fans, uniforms often spark some of the greatest debate. Which threads are the best and which are total duds?

Fortunately for college football fans, legendary former Iowa head football coach Hayden Fry knew the program needed a fresh start with its image. When Fry arrived in December of 1978, the Hawkeyes had not enjoyed a winning season since 1961 and he represented the fourth head coach in nine years.

Fry enlisted the help of then-Iowa sports information director George Wine to spread the word that the Hawkeyes were in the market for a change and wanted a different, distinctive decal on their helmets. Wine reached out to Charles Edwards, whose firm Pepco Litho printed Iowa’s media guides at the time and worked with a lot of commercial artists.

Edwards then contacted Bill Colbert, the art director for Three Arts Advertising in Cedar Rapids. On a plane flight home from the Twin Cities, Colbert sketched out a rough design of a helmet decal with his pen on a paper napkin. After presenting the final design to Fry, the result was iconic. The Tigerhawk was met with rave reviews in the 1979 season and has become Iowa’s signature logo for all sports.

What did the Hawkeyes’ headgear look like before the Tigerhawk and what wrinkles have Iowa’s helmets seen over the years?

Ranking the best helmets in the Big Ten from worst to first

The Big Ten has some iconic helmets. We take a stab at ranking the lids from worst to first in the conference. Where does Ohio State fall?

Helmets. They are seen as the symbol of a college football team. You have  throwback lids that hearken to yesteryear, new age ones worn with alternate jerseys and refurbished ones that try to rebrand a program in need of it.

Many teams in the Big Ten have iconic helmets that stand the test of time, while others could use a little more work than just slapping a logo on both sides.

We decided to poll an array of people from — um, our site here — to rank the best helmets in the Big Ten. Of course opinions vary, and of course we might be homers here with an Ohio State slant, but we’ll try to be as objective as possible.

Also, we’re going with the traditional helmet here, not any of the alternate stuff. We like all of that, but none of those are symbols of the programs.

Here’s a look at ranking the headgear of football teams in the conference that loves tradition, the Big Ten. We’ll go from worst to first. Don’t shoot the messenger, just get on board with what he’s selling.
